Driving

How the hell he had gotten stuck doing all the driving was still a mystery to Spike. Apparently even Goddesses needed sleep, granted she was in a mortal body, that fact did not seem to make it any less strange to the vampire. Glancing at the map Spike once more felt the irony of Rabekuh having no sense of direction. One would think a Goddess with as much knowledge as her would have some sense of direction, but no, the woman depended on maps to get her to where she was going.

The destination for this trip was The Valley of the Sun. The unhappy driver of this trip could say he had proudly never been there, the reason he had not also making it not much of a surprise the Veteran Slayer had made it her home. Unlike most states that proudly spoke of their constant sunshine, Phoenix, Arizona was not a popular hangout for most vampires. It was the United States own personal, granted modernized, Africa. Vampires didn’t like that place much either. Spike hadn’t even wanted to go there and yet had, for it was the only way he could get the soul he had desired. The heat and dry atmosphere was just not something the blood suckers liked.

Spike had to admit though, the twelve hour drive gave him time to think, especially when there was no civilization to keep him entertained or distract from his thoughts. In the quiet of his own mind the vampire could admit to himself, it was a good thing. His thoughts? They were currently on the woman sleeping next to him, she was certainly an enigma. She proved to be even more so now that he was actually spending time with her.

He had felt a great deal of her power – having no doubt there was more he’d yet to feel, he had twice now even been able to see a demonstration of her abilities. Yet, this woman did not have any way of transportation, claiming she had a vehicle waiting at the destination, she was prone to motion sickness, and drove him insane with how quickly she bounced between polite and casual like a ping pong ball. Of couse he had to admit knowing – nay, traveling with her had its perks. He thoughts back to when they had been preparing to leave.

^_^

“You’re kidding me right? You’ve blackened out all the windows! How are you supposed to see anything?” There was an indignant tone to the voice that told Spike she was not at all happy with his transportation.

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a vampire. The sun and I are not friends, there is no bloody way I’m going to drive around without some sort of protection.”

“But we can’t take that car, I’ll get sick faster than you can get on the highway.” Spike had not been able to keep the rather shocked, What? From coming out of his mouth, of course as she looked at him like he was an idiot, he wished he had. “I cannot let us take this car like this. It’s indignant as well as hazardous to my health.” That polite and yet professional tone, Spike's eye nearly twitched.

“Then what the bloody hell do you suggest we take? You said you don’t have a car and there is no way I’m riding on a plane.” Spike hated flying, he wasn’t going to admit that to anyone else, but he hated it. That and with how strict the airports were now and days he wouldn’t be able to get on, he had after all never bothered to get an ID of any kind.

“Well we will just have to remove that repulsive stuff you’ve used to cover the windows up.” Now he did look at her with such a look it was very clear the vampire thought this Goddess a few bolts loose, remembering Glory he couldn't help but think it must just come with the territory. “Don’t worry, you’ll keep your precious skin.”

The scarred eyebrow was lifted at that, “It’s not my skin I’m worried about it’s my whole damn body! With a straight shot drive and only five hours before sunrise you’re delusional.”

The glare she sent his direction was brushed off, though he would admit he was a little worried about her barbecuing him as she had the other vamp, he didn’t show it though. “I am no such thing. You will wear this.” She lifted a ring at that moment and Spike found himself impressed, in aw, and then absolutely confused.

“That can’t be the Gem of Amara. It was destroyed by Peaches himself.”

“It’s not. This is its predecessor. It only makes you impervious to sunlight and your general everyday flames. I couldn’t make you impossible to kill. That would be against the rules.” Rules, what he hell were these rules; she’d mentioned them before but never actually told him what it was all about. His mind wandered Glory once more, she hadn't followed any rules. But she was also from a Hell Dimensions, Rabekuh was in this one, she said for This world. Did that stretch out into Dimensions? Spike didn’t think so nor did he care to ask.

“So I wear that and I can drive in the sun.” Not that he was skeptical, it was simply that, well he really didn't believe her.

“Yep. Now let’s get that stuff off your windows and go!” Where she got such excitement so suddenly he had no clue, but he was going to go along with it. Opening the car door he prepared to take off the stuff he’d painstakingly put on after purchasing the damn thing – after all he had lost his dear, sweet, oh so beloved, DeSoto a long while ago. He missed that car. Of course he nearly lost his composure when all the paper he’d used caught aflame and quickly disappeared, the black paint he'd smeared on the window seemed to melt away just as quickly, neither leaving any trace to show they had ever been there. Spike looked to the Goddess as she calmly got in the car as if it hadn’t at all happened, then looked to him. “Are you going to finish packing up the trunk?”

^_^

Spike had packed the trunk by himself, grudgingly so, but he had done it. They’d hit the road and he was starting to get nervous now. The time was getting late, or early have you, and the sun would be coming up soon. The vampire looked towards the ring on his finger, it was similar to the Gem of Amara, simpler though, the gem itself no where as dark green as the other had been, this was a lighter green, almost as if an emerald yet looking at it close enough one would know the hue was all wrong. Tapping his fingers against the wheel and grinning as the Ramones came on he let his mind wonder elsewhere, after all, it was dawn and as it quietly turned into the true and actual sunrise, Spike let all thoughts leave his mind as he enjoyed the warmth of the suns rays for the first time in six years.

Vilpax: Sorry this chapter is a bit shorter, I'm going to try to make them a little longer but sometimes, you just have to stop where it feels like it needs to. Next chapter they enter Phoenix and we get to see another Familiar face!
