"What The Fuck Was That?"

Chapter 2

Faiths POV

What the fuck was that?

I get up onto all fours spitting the grass out of my mouth. Looking up that’s only the smallest bit of grass this place has to offer. I’ve never really been to the countryside but I would guess this is what it looks like. The field I landed in stretches for miles. It only doesn’t disappear over the horizon because a rather large forest stands in its way.

I get up onto my knees and sit back on my feet to get a better look at my surroundings. Not a lot of difference there. Lots and lost of field. And some trees here and there. Now I know why I never went to the countryside. It looks a little boring.

I hear something that sounds an awful lot like thunder, looking behind me I can see maybe a dozen men on horses. Horses. Who uses those anymore?

On horseback it don’t take the men long to reach me. And circle me. Suddenly having a bad feeling about this. “Who the fuck, are you guys supposed to be?”

One turns to another and says something I don’t understand. Where did that portal thing take me? After he finishes speaking they all seem to look at me. Not good.

One of them charges at me on his horse drawing his sharp looking sword as he does. He swings his sword downwards and I dodge it easily. He’s not looking to kill me. He’s looking to make me give up. Or wound me if need be. Makes me worth something. Gives me the upper hand so I don’t care what I happen to be worth.

He turns and begins to charge again. Swinging his sword towards me again. I move myself out of the way of the blade and latch myself onto his wrist and bring him down from his horse.

I push him in the side of the head and being human he gets knocked out and I get the sword from out of his grip. I swing it once to test the weight before more of them begin to charge.

I roll out of the way of most of the blades. One of them manages to catch me on the shoulder as I roll I manage to get myself out of the little circle they have made and I begin to run.

And run. I catch up with the horse our buddy back there happened to ‘fall off’ I put my foot in the stirrup and pull myself up onto the animals back. I’m quite happy with the fact that I didn’t end up facing the wrong way.

Now how do I make this thing go faster? I try clinking my tongue against my teeth. That’s how Jon Wayne does it in the movies. It seems as if it’s looking at me in disgust. Well that’s not the ‘on’ button. I panic and kick the thing and it takes off like a bat out of hell. I grab onto its mane to stay on it back as it practicality flies along the field.

Now where is the steering wheel? It’s got to have one. I thought every vehicle had one. Fuck it I don’t really care it’s managing to put some distance between those guys and me.

It’s heading for the woods which to tell the truth I’m a little worried about those low branches. I’ve never done this before but the horse seems to know what it’s doing so why not go with it.

I can feel blood-soaking trough my t-shirt from the slice on my shoulder and really wish this thing had a turbo button I could just press. Somehow I think kicking it again might piss it off.

We get into the woods and thankfully it misses most of the low branches that I was afraid of.

I can hear far off voices in that language that I don’t understand and see that all of the men have stopped right at the edge of the woods as if they are scared of whatever might be in here. Doesn’t fill me with confidence.

The horse just keeps going only slowing to go around a few tight bends. Eventually it stops in a clearing. Putting its head down. Making me topple over its head onto the ground.

It just looks at me and begins to graze. Least I have time to look at my wound. Not that I can see it, which is never helpful. I reach under my t-shirt that is getting sticky with blood and run my hand over the slice. It’s still bleeding slightly but it’s starting to heal over. I rip a bit off my shirt and hold it against the wound. Where it is I have no hope of being able to bandage it.

Finally I have a moment to just take in my surroundings. The sunlight is able to pierce its way through some of the canopy lighting up the forest floor. Not a lot to say really. Trees grass and more trees really.

Those guys seemed scared to come in here though so I can say that I’m safe for the moment. From them anyway.

I take a seat against a tree. Right. So I was sucked through a portal thingy. And I’ve ended up somewhere with a lot of countryside. Looking over at the horse grazing reminds me also no cars.

I dropped the sword I took a while back. The horse was throwing me around a bit so I lost my grip. In its saddle I can see the hilt of another weapon. Taking it out it looks old. But brand new at the same time. That doesn’t make any sense so I’ll explain. It’s an old style of weapon. It’s a straight sword with a big hilt which not much in the way of a guard. It just sort of ‘T’s as it meets with the blade.

But it looks like it was only made yesterday. I’m mean sure there’s some blood on it but it’s a sword what else are you going to do with it?

I replace the sword to its scabbard and take another look around. If I didn’t know any better I would say I’ve gone back in time. Way back in time.

On the up side I’ve stopped bleeding.

I hear a loud scream in the distance.

Just had to jinx it didn’t I? I look over at my stolen horse wondering if I could get back on it’s back.

Well I got back on the horse.

Staying on it isn’t as easy as it was a moment ago. The upside is that I’ve figured out how to steer. I just have to point the head the way I want to go. Which means pulling on the rains. I tug the animal in the direction of the scream. I come out of the small forest on the other side to, would you believe it? Another field.

This one with a little more happening in it than people trying to capture me. There’s a girl running from what is defiantly a demon. It’s big grey and ugly. With long horns on the top of his head. They look sharp.

I push my heels into the animals sides getting it to go just a little faster. I get close enough to be able to fight hand to hand with the demon but I still have a problem with getting down. I don’t really just want to jump. I un-sheathe the sword in the saddle and aim it at the monster as I charge past it.

I look back and see black blood flowing from its upper arm when I struck it. I try to pull the horse around and charge again. Again I catch it in the upper arm just under the other wound I made. This is really not working. All I’ve managed to do is change where its attention is. I don’t seem to be hurting it at all.

I need to get down. I lean forward and throw my leg over the horse’s back and misjudge how high it really is. I land flat on my ass.

I use the blade to get back to my feet. “Well that was smooth Faith.” I don’t have time to beat myself up any more about my dismount as the large demon is standing over me. This close it looks a lot bigger. It’s about 8ft tall. That’s without his horns by the way. And they are fucking long.

He lifts his rather heavy hand over his head to strike me. I bring my sword up to defend myself from the blow. He imbeds himself on my blade and pulls his arm off it again.

It doesn’t even slow him down. He brings his other arm into the air and I roll out of the way. They might be big and hard to take down but at least these things are slow.

The girl who was running a minute ago seems to be trying to get into the fight. If I don’t act fast she’s going to be a little shorter. I put the blade between the demon and the woman’s head stopping the blow again.

I push her back and out of harms way and detach my sword from his arm kicking it in the gut. Mostly because that’s the only place I can reach. It makes it stumble back a little bit. That might be more to do with the amount of blood it’s been losing in the past few minutes.

I turn to make sure I haven’t injured the woman I just pushed back and see she’s fine. On the floor but alive and looks as though she’ll live. I turn back to find the demon head bowed with those big ass horns pointing right at me.

Is it charging at me?

The horns pierce my abdomen and are pushed through until my stomach is pushed right against the top of the demons head. I scream out against the pain as it lifts its head. It feeling like it’s going to rip its way right up my body.

I look down and find what can only be the least armoured part of this creature. At the back of its neck it looks like it’s outer shell parts. I lift the sword in both of my hands and bring down the tip of the blade hard to that point. I feel the resistance of its flesh and I feel it give as the blade pokes out the other side of its neck.

I push against its head trying to get off this long horn. The woman who was running from this monster comes over and stops me from moving any more.

She starts to fuss around my wound I hold her bloody hands pulling them away from me. “Just leave it.”

She says something in that language again. I don’t have time to ask her to say it again because it’s getting really hard to breath.

I lean forward and everything goes black.
