Spike let the time since his return pass hitting up Willy (literally when the mood took him) for information on the biggest bads in the area and then depending on what they were doing or why knocking a few heads. All in all he was starting to get things under control, or as controlled as things could be on a hell mouth. So far her majesty the slayer didn’t seemed to have noticed his presence and his sire knew he was there but seemed to be ignoring him in the hopes he’s go away. Only tonight he hears a rumour about the first. About big trouble and decides to have a look see. Maybe if he’s lucky he will see the great fool get offed.

Sneaking in to the mansion and suddenly he finds himself face to face with Angel. Bloody tosser thinks he’s part of the priests’ mojo and starts apologizing for the things he did trying to make amends. After a brief, and angst ridden moment worthy of Disney, Spike is sneaking away from the mansion again wondering if there is something wrong with the bloodline and if all the line are crazy. Dismisses the thought pretty quickly because he’s normal after all.

He lay low for a while after, not sure what his poof of a sire will do. But now he’s bored and going to find something worth his while. Comes into town just in time to see the whelp driving the most ridiculous car towards the bronze. Decides not to let the opportunity to get in some serious mocking pass and follows.

Stopped for a quick bite inside the club and looses him for a moment. Dashes outside to see Harris facing down a man, and he used the term loosely, with a great big knife. Spike snickered to himself in the shadows as he sees the donut boy fighting to keep his cool and breathes deep to take in the scent of his fear filling the air. Could he possibly be less of a man? Then the thought strikes him. Where is her Slayership? Bint doesn’t often let the pets out after dark by themselves. Spike sees that the whelp and his new “mates” are leaving and decides to follow not that he’s worried about what happens to the whelp, but it has been a slow week after all.

Follows him for most of the evening as it turns out. Watches the white knight get pushed around by “the gang”. Sees the watcher brush him off, never noticing the boys fear. Spike notices that he doesn’t tell the watcher about his evening, doesn’t ask for help. Spike wonders if there is more to the boy than he thought. Back to town again and he sees the little witch pass him off. His demon appreciates the strength of will he shows and his eagerness to join the fight and the little bit of William that remains appreciates his loyalty and the fact that he is sensible enough to still be afraid of the darkness. All of him wonders what kind of vampire Xander would make.

Still following him Spike sees him save a slayer by running one of the sisterhood, if he’s not mistaken, down with his car. Oh well we can’t all be perfect.

Snarls to himself as the slayer doesn’t recognize what he did for her and waves him away without thanks. Now in Xander he sees himself after he was turned risking his all for Dru and Angelus and getting nothing in return. So he wonders if he has time to kill her now and decides that no, he isn’t done with Xander for the night.

Sneaks into the school slipping through the shadows still following Xander. He listens to the confrontation with Jack, watching the action through the slightly open door. Realizes that this whelp truly does have a pair on him and decides he would definately like to find out more. Smirks as Xander’s voice floats out to him.
“I don’t think I want to be seeing you on campus again Jack”

Up the stairs and Xander finds himself stepping into the strangely quiet hallways, the apocalypse must be done for the day.

Everything is so quiet in fact that when he sees movement in the shadows it takes a few minutes for the golf clap to make its self known over the sound of his heart.

“Brilliant Pet”.
Xander spun towards the new sound hoping that the voice did not belong to who he thought it was. Unfortunately he found himself staring at a smug expression and shock of white blond peroxide hair.
“Spike?” Xander tried to keep an eye on the vampire while searching for a weapon, and prepares himself for the night to get even worse.

“Ya did well pet.” Spike paces around Xander a tight circle allowing him to appraise the Whelp from all angles.
Xander’s anger spikes. “I did well?”
Spike arches his eyebrows and smirks “Suprised me luv, didn't think you had it in you”
Xander scowls. “I suprised...?!” He stalks forward “Ok let’s hear it. I’ll even get you started ‘Xander you are a complete loser, your friends don’t need you, even a little bit and …”
Xander froze me rant jumping back as Spike lent in and sniffed him. “What the hell!”
“You’re hurt pet. I can smell the blood”
Xander rocks on the balls of his feet dropping his eyes to the ground. “I’ve had worse; they will heal on their own”
Spike pretends not to hear him as he reaches out and takes an arm which tenses “Where’s your nurses office? Let’s get you fixed up”
The night Xander’s been having, he finds it hard to argue.

Spike cleans the wounds tasting the blood from his fingers as he works when the temptation became too much. The wounds are mostly superficial, Xander was right they didn’t really need tending. As he works Spike notices the old scars and wonders how often they send their donut boy home in pieces. Strokes his fingers carefully over the bandaged wound on his arm as he ponders why that bothers him so much. Suddenly he is pulled from his thoughts by Xander’s quiet but determined questions.

“Why help me Spike? You do remember that you are a vampire don’t you? They aren’t big on the helping people”
Spike barks out a laugh “Not helping people though am I? I’m helping you”
Xander stiffens “That’s right because the Zeppo isn’t a real person”
Spike sniggers “The Zeppo?” “Please tell me you didn’t choose that one for yourself!”
Xander shakes his head and stands. As he speaks his voice is tinged with sarcasm and bitterness “Well we can’t all have cool nicknames like ‘Spike’ now can we?”
“Wot! I’ll have you know I got that name by...”
“Yeah I know the story” Xander walked past Spike, turning at the door to look at him lounging against the nurse’s desk flicking cigarette ash over her files and makes a decision.

“Thanks for patching me up, I won’t tell Buffy you are here. But if you don’t want her to know your back you better get out of the school, in fact if you were a sensible vampire” his snort shows exactly what he thinks about that statement “you should have made yourself scarce when you realized you were getting pretty close to getting blown up.” Xander’s dark brown eyes catch his for a moment and there is the hint of a smile on his face and his eyes shine with humour once again. Not waiting for a reply Xander slips out into the darkened hallway and disappears leaving Spike with his thoughts and his cigarette.

Later Spike would realize that he never thought of leaving, because the idea that the boy would fail hadn’t even occurred to him.
