Chapter One

To say that Angel was shocked to see Giles in his home was an understatement. He never expected to see the man there voluntarily, especially after the last time he was there, but there he was sitting on his couch with papers spread out around him, his head thrown back, snoring, obviously waiting for Angel to come home to talk to him.

Angel went into his kitchen, warmed up some blood, and made Giles some tea, knowing somehow that the Englishman would need some. After everything was warmed up, he carried it into the living room, setting the cup in front of Giles, before gently waking the Watcher.

"Huh? Wha…? Oh! I'm so dreadfully sorry, Angel. I was hoping that you would have been back sooner from patrolling with Buffy."

"Actually Giles, I finished patrolling with her quite sometime ago. I was following the others to make sure that they made it home; something Buffy has stopped doing of late. Then I did a long sweep before I came back here to turn in. So, what brings you here at this time of night?"

Seeing the tea in front of him, Giles picked it up and took a drink, trying to find a way to tell Angel what he knew so far, which he had to admit wasn't much.

"Angel, the Watcher's Council, in their infinite wisdom, sent several crates full of books and prophecies to me that are due to occur sometime in the next two months to ten years. Most of these we have already taken care of totally by accident, but I ran across one today that affects you, Spike, and Buffy in a way that Buffy is going to dislike. I'll even go as far as to say she will be furious as to the outcome of the matter. Here, I'll let you read it."

Handing over the book that the prophecy was in and showing Angel where it was, he then sat back and watched as Angel read and reread the prophesy. He watched as the vampire got up, paced, then went back to the book, reread the thing again, slammed the book closed and paced some more. Finally he dropped down into the chair as if he was a petulant teenager.

"You know Giles, I'm going to have to agree with you. Buffy is going to be absolutely furious over this."

"Quite, I’m afraid."

After discussing the prophecy a little more, Giles left to get some sleep, leaving the documentation he had with Angel so he could go over it and do some research using the books he had. But Angel did no research on this night. Instead, he was stuck in a deep brooding mood over an incident that had happened when he was Angelus.

"Well, if it isn't the slayer's White Knight…"

"White Knight…"

"White Knight…"

Quickly grabbing up the book again and rereading the page, he started to groan and then snickered. It looked like he was destined to marry Alexander LaValle Harris... and to be married to him forever. This must be the second part of his punishment, he just knew it.

Noticing that the sun was up, he headed off to bed, setting the alarm to make it to the Scoobie meeting that night. Xander was going to need protection from Buffy if she acted according to her nature. This just might be the break he needed to get her to stop fawning all over him. He really didn't want her like that anymore.

Xander walked towards the library after school let out to help do some research on the latest prophecy. Giles had already cornered them that morning and asked for help, actually asked, which in of itself made him worried.

As soon as he walked in, the first thing he noticed was Angel sitting at the research table already going through some books. He was barely able to hold in a snarl from his hyena; she had been getting closer and closer to the surface lately and he had been noticing the effects on his body. Nothing power-wise, just better senses and vision, and a craving to stalk things.

As he stood there wondering if he could sneak back out, Giles came out of his office and caught him. "Ah, yes Xander. Good, you’re here. If you’d please join us? Where are the girls?"

"Buffy totally bombed the chem test so she has to stay after and get some extra credit work and Willow is with her."

"I'm surprised you aren't there, too. You haven't been one not to ’bomb’ a test," replied Giles, and then immediately regretted what he said.

"Hey, the Xan-man studies, just enough to get by, but he studies." Must not make better grades that your father, must never show up your father, you know what happens, the voice in his head reminded him quickly.

"I see. Well, maybe you could be more vigilant with these books. We are looking for any reference to something called the Night's eye."

"Night's eye, I read something about that…" Xander mumbled as he started looking through the books.

Giles looked at him strangely, not sure how to take the idea that Xander actually remembered something he had read. The boy never gave one hope of him being a scholar of any type.

The next half hour was spent looking through the stacks of books, with Xander getting extremely frustrated. He knew had read something about the Night's Eye, but where or when eluded him somehow. By then the girls were finished with the chemistry teacher and had just walked through the door.

"Angel," Buffy cried happily, rushing over to hug and sit in her soulmate's lap. He gently transferred her to the chair next to him, but that just caused her to scoot the chair over, making Angel give up the idea of personal space as long as she was there.

This, in turn, caused Xander to roll his eyes and mumble, "Buffy the Vampire Layer."

Luckily only Willow heard him, which caused her to hit him in the shoulder and hiss, "Xander!"

Giles stood up and cleared his throat, quieting everyone down so they could hear about the next big thing for the Hellmouth.

"Okay, the next big event has nothing to do with the Hellmouth per se, but rather with Angel and his soulmate. If Angel and his soulmate are married using a specific ritual, then Angel's soul will be secure for all time, and they will have an eternity together."

"Yes! I knew that we would be together forever, Angel," Buffy said, jumping up and down.

Xander just sneered, "You mean all this research is so Deadboy can have his jollies and keep his soul, too? Man, I have better things to do."

"Xander!!!" both Buffy and Willow yelled at him.

"What? You two may want Captain Forehead and Buffy back in the saddle, but some of us think that is against nature, a crime against God and Man, and that Angel should have been killed long before he was sent to hell. Which, by the way, his time there? Way too short in my opinion."

At that Buffy walked over to him and slapped him. "I'm so tired of your jealous rants. Just get over yourself. I'll never love or want you, so move on."

"Listen to this one more time, bitch. I have not loved you since you performed that illegal lap dance on me on the dance floor to make Deadboy jealous. I can barely tolerate you now as it is because of your sleeping with the enemy attitude. I do not and never will love you again. Do you understand?"

"CHILDREN!!! Will you cease and desist this childish prattle? Buffy is not even Angel's soulmate so this whole discussion is rather moot," yelled Giles, who was tired of those two bickering over Angel and what had happened in the past. While he was unable to ever forget, he knew it wasn’t the same man who was sitting before him today, but rather the demon Angelus, who did all those horrible things. And if that demon ever showed up again, slayer or no slayer he would be the first in line to dust the bastard.

"What!! I am so his soulmate," Buffy's voice screeched, reaching a new level of sonic projection.

"Buffy, according to this prophecy Angel's soulmate is a man. This man must not only marry Angel, but Spike also, giving him a soul as well, and the three will live until time’s final stroke."

Buffy started shrieking and yelling and stomping around the library. "No, it’s not fair, not after everything we’ve been through!"

The others, with the exception of Willow, ignored her. The red-haired witch walked over to her blond friend and held her to calm her down before something was destroyed that they might need later. The others heard her murmur to Buffy but the words were unintelligible.

Giles waited impatiently for his charge to get a hold of herself, greatly disappointed and disturbed by her actions, especially recently. He feared for the safety of whoever they found the White Knight to be.
