Poisoned Pawn

Chapter one: Dead and Gone (told from Dee Dee's POV)

I open the door to the attic, and head out. There isn't much to see up here, but I do notice a nice painting hanging at the far end of the hall near the stairs. I may come back here at a later date just to swipe it off poor Dr. Allenton's hands. I walk slowly in the hall, until I come upon a semi open door to my left. I slowly open it, hoping that I would find someone sleeping, or scared as hell of me. I bring my mini light to bear, and shine it into the bedroom.

Nothing. Empty.

I choose to call little brother.

"Ok P, I'm in. I'm on the top floor. There's nothing here from the attic heading out. I did a sweep of the only other room up here, and I saw nothing. Can you tell me where this sword is located?"

" The sword should be in the study, locked in some giant safe that looks like a gun locker", P answers back. " Are things quiet there?"

"Too quiet."

"You really don't like this, do you?"

I could hear the concern in his voice.

"No, I don't. I've been having bad vibes since I first stepped in here."

I make my way down the stairs to the next floor.

Upon reaching the next floor, I turn my head to the right. In front of me, I see a smashed window. There is glass all over the area. Something happened. Something terrible.

This is not looking good at all. I turn my head to the left, only to see another open door. I am reluctant to go to that door, as the stairs leading down to the main floor is right in the middle of the hall. I make note of a small, but visible blood trail leading to the bedroom from the stairs. My bad feelings are just starting to get worse, as I can hear the sound of a TV, or something like it coming from that room. I head for the door.

Something tells me I should investigate.

P has other ideas.

"What's going on?" he asks somewhat rushed.

"You got me, but whatever it is I'm not too fond of it."

"Dee Dee, just go get the item. Th-."

I had to cut him off for a change. I hate it when he starts to worry, and right now I didn't need to listen to a worrisome little brother. I had enough shit on my plate as it is without listening to him worry. I make my way towards the door. I slowly push the door open a bit further. I could see the TV blaring. I step inside to cut the TV off.

Then I flick the switch to cut the bedroom light on. The light begins to cast a dim eerie glow.

Then I see the first signs of real trouble.

Now that something is now telling me that I shouldn't have come in here.

There's blood all over the walls, all over the bed.... pretty much all over the room.

"Hey P," I say through the headset. "There's blood all over the place."

"Any signs of a body?" he asks in that all too worried tone.

I say nothing, but as I turn my head to the far end of the bedroom, I can see the body he's asking about. "Yeah, there's a body here. Looks like the beloved Dr. Allenton to me. Beaten, crucified head down, split open like a stuck pig up to the neck, and beheaded." I finally answer, trying not to puke my brains out. I do my best to ignore the severed head of Dr.Allenton staring back at me wide-eyed from a corner below the rest of his body.

" Get out of there, and find the sword."

I dare not mention the victim's heart sitting in a small pool of blood on the bed in front of me, still beating. And the fact that I'm standing in a pool of blood still hasn't set in. I cut off the light and slowly walk out of the bedroom, and towards the middle of the hall. I slowly walk down the stairs.

As I reach the main floor of the house, I go directly through the living room, and directly into the study room. Inside the study room, everything is a mess. I make note of all the messed up papers, ravaged bookcases, and whatever else I deem worthwhile. Then I turn my head to the big safe sitting to the left of the broken desk. The door beenbeen ripped off the hinges, and now sits in a corner on the other side. I walk over to the open safe. The sword is gone.

"Shadowmage? It's me, Dee Dee. The sword's gone, what now?"

"Get out of there. Use that cloaking ability of yours to get out. Find a nice hotel. I'll be in touch."

I close my eyes, and engage my cloaking.

I switch off the headset and made my way towards the embrace of the night. Upon reaching outside, I can see a horde of police officers getting out of their cars, and going through the front door of the Allenton house. I can also see the Coroner's van coming up the street. I know they're are in for the shock of their lives when they see what was done to their good doctor. I have better things to worry about.

I didn't even tell P about the numerous claw and bite marks on the good doc.
