Delicate times call for delicate measures
Buffy sat at the island in the middle of the kitchen with her head in her hands, looking like she’d just finished a good groan, when Tara walked in. The keen slayers ears picked up on the sound of feet taking light steps towards her. She lifted her head, and ran her fingers through blonde hair. “Hey,” Tara said.
“Hey,” Buffy recited back to her. “Sorry about that interruption back there.”
“It’s fine.” Tara replied. There was silence broken by a heavy sigh from Buffy. “Spike?” Tara asked.
Buffy’s eyes met Tara’s. Tara was in fact the only one that knew about the ongoing Buffy and Spike pairing, and the toll it took on the Slayer. Buffy sighed again. “Yeah.” She answered then added, “When isn’t it?”
Tara shrugged a knowing fair-colored brow, “Not a lot lately.” She replied, to which Buffy only snorted in reply. “What happened this time?”
“Nothing.” Buffy answered. “Not a single thing.” She ran a hand over her face that stopped at her mouth and was left there as she looked up at Tara.
“So… there was no…romp?”
“Nope, not even a kiss.” Buffy said. “But the weirdest part of it is… I don’t even remember going there. I just remember being there.”
Tara was silent looking at the other woman in thought. “So you were just…there?”
“Yeah.”
“You don’t remember going there or how you got there?”
“No.”
“One minute you were one place, the next another?”
“Pretty much.”
“Hm.”
“I see your ‘hm’ and raise you a ‘huh’.” Buffy said.
Tara looked at her, “Well maybe you blanked it out.” Tara suggested. Buffy looked up at her again, “I mean with all the…stuff going on between you lately, maybe your subconscious took it out of your memory.”
“Could be.” Buffy said.
“Or maybe your subconscious took you there because subconsciously you wanted to be there.”
Buffy didn’t like that suggestion as much. “Why would I want to be there?” She was afraid of the answer.
“I dunno, anger, fear, hormones, there are endless answers.” Tara said with a shrug.
Buffy smiled and chuckled lightly, “You’re starting to sound like Giles.”
Tara then smiled. “Well you learn from the best huh.”
The calmness of this moment, like all others in Buffy’s life, was then interrupted. This time by Willow’s voice from the living room.
“Buffy, Tara c’mere.” She said.
The two exchange slightly worried glances before hurrying into the living room where Willow sat on the couch staring at the tv with the remote in her hand. “I was flipping through channels when I found it.”
The tv was on to the news and a young Asian woman was talking into a microphone in front of a camera. Behind her were a ambulance and two coroners vehicles loading black bags into the back of them, while a gurney was being wheeled into the ambulance. “Breaking news from Sunnydale park.” The news reporter began.
“Turn it up.” Buffy said as she sat on the edge of the table closest to the tv. Tara sat beside Willow, who turned up the volume, they both craned their neck to see over the interested Slayer.
“Not thirty minutes ago there was tragedy in Sunnydale park. Three young teenagers, Lacy Johnston, Michael Richardson, and Rachel Pridgen were attacked and savagely and brutally wounded by what Rachel Pridgen, the lone survivor of the attack, described as quote, ‘Dudes with messed up faces and sharp teeth.’ Un-quote.”
The three exchanged knowing glances and said in unison, “Vamps.”
“Rachel is being carried to Sunnydale Hospital as I speak and is said to be in moderate condition, apparently while the culprit was attacking Johnston and Richardson, Pridgen was able to free herself from his grasps and run for help. We’ll have more on this story in a moment, back to you Bridget.” The screen went black when Willow pressed the power button. Buffy turned to her friends on the couch. “Looks like I’m gonna have to saddle up again.” She said with a sigh that was part disappointment and part relief, she was a Slayer and that’s what Slayers are meant to do. Slay. She stood, but Tara stopped her.
“Wait.”
“I have to go now or that vamp will hurt more citizens.” Buffy said.
“Yeah but that same vamp will hurt more citizens if you dust the wrong one.” Tara said logically.
“Tara’s right.” Willow said always ready to back Tara if there was real need. “You can’t just go out there with all the willy-nillyness dusting nocturnal thing you see.”
“But I like the willy-nilly.” Buffy said in a small voice.
“Sorry, but this is a delicate situation here, Buff.” Willow said, “And it has to be handled delicately.”
“How delicate we talking here?” Buffy asked.
“So delicate that we know who we’re goin for, but not so delicate that you can’t beat the dust out of whoever did it.”
Buffy shrugged, “I can deal with that.”
