A/N: I found this to be the most difficult chapter to write, trying to make all the dots connect. Hopefully I succeeded and it all makes sense. It’s loosely based on canon, so try not to over analyze. ;) Thanks for all the feedback, they keep me writing. Here are the answers you’ve all been waiting for.
Chapter 2
Faith’s POV
“Faith, what happened?”
“We were attacked by a gang of vamps. She was bitten.” Panic coursed through my voice.
Giles moves aside to let us in and I gently lay her on his couch. He gets a good look at her and starts bombarding me with questions.
“GOOD GOD, Faith! Do you have any idea what this means? Tell me exactly what happened, start from the beginning.”
“It was real spooky, G-man. After the bite, she became possessed, kicked the un-living shit out of the vamp and dusted him; then she just fainted. He probably infected her with something, when he fed on her. I didn’t think a hospital could help her.”
“How in God’s Heaven, did you find her?”
“She was with me when it happened, we’re. . .um. . .she’s my girl. Is that a problem?”
“Oh, . . .OH MY. . .that’s a. . .remarkable, Faith. I had no idea you were so inclined.”
His hands start getting shaky and he downs his tea in one big gulp.
“Yeah, so now you know. Please, you gotta help her G-man.”
I hadn’t really planned on coming out to Giles this way. I usually keep my personal life to myself. Besides, it’s not like I had anyone steady around to introduce him to.
“Ah, yes, of course. Let’s start by cleaning up her wound, fetch the first aid kit and a wet towel.”
His voice changed, now turning all business. He rolls up his sleeves to prepare as I run to the bathroom for the kit. I relay the full story of the night to him in more detail, minus the part of the multiple orgasms, of course. He doesn’t seem surprised by her sudden power surge against the vamp and how she dusted him with such precision. In fact, it looked like he had a small smile on his face.
He looked more surprised when I told him we were a couple. It figures; anything demonic or supernatural wouldn’t faze him at all, but confront him with human sexuality and he becomes a bumbling idiot.
He’s looking after her with so much care, like she was his own daughter, gently removing stray locks from her face. Gotta give Giles kudos for being a fatherly figure to everyone, even to me. He was always there for me whenever I needed some patching up after getting my ass beaten down.
He carefully untied my makeshift bandage and used the wet cloth to wipe away the dry blood on her neck, revealing her bite marks. But something’s way off, they aren’t half as big as they were when I first saw them. They had already started to close up. What the hell? How can her wound be healing so fast? I look at Giles, wide-eyed.
“Hey, how’d she-?”
“Looks like Buffy will be just fine.” He said interrupting my question.
I let out a big sigh, relieved that she’s gonna be okay. He put some ointment over the small prick marks then taped a clean dressing over them. But wait a minute, did he just call her by her stage name? No, he couldn’t have seen her there, could he?
“Have you been to the Pussy club?” I glared straight at him.
“What? The P-Pussy club. . .Oh my goodness, NO Faith. I haven't patronized that type of establishment in years. What the devil made you ask me that?”
“Never mind, my mistake.” I didn’t bother explaining; it wasn’t any of his business to know where she worked. I couldn’t avoid the small grin on my face from actually getting him to say ‘pussy.’ That was classic. He started to clean his glasses nervously. I knew he was hiding something from me.
“OK, G-man. . .GIVE. What’s the what? You’re not a very good liar.”
Then it struck me. B had told me about an older guy she used to date.
“Are you the old FART she dated?” I’m up in his face now, ready to smack the truth out of him.
“Faith, now calm down. I did NO such thing. I’m old enough to be her father.”
“Then how the hell do you know her name? You slipped and called her Buffy when I didn’t even give you her name!”
“Please Faith, will you compose yourself?”
“C’mon, G. I KNOW, you know something. Do I have to beat it out of you?”
I start to rub my fist in my palm as a warning and he knows I’ll do it if I have to. He knows how much I hate being lied to. I nearly broke his jaw after he pulled that fucked up Cruciamentum test on me when I turned eighteen. I didn’t speak to him for weeks.
“Very well Faith, I might as well tell you. I suppose you’ll eventually find out as soon as the spell is completely worn off and your memory returns.”
“Spell? What spell? You messed with my memory?”
“I suggest you take a seat before I begin. You may not believe what you hear.”
I reluctantly plopped myself on the couch’s arm next to B’s head.
“This better be good. Now SPILL it, G-man.”
He takes a deep breath and begins.
“You are right. I’m well acquainted with Miss Buffy Summers. I was her. . .”
“You’re her FATHER? I KNEW there was something between the two of you.”
“For God’s sakes Faith, will you please stop interrupting and let me finish.”
“Then hurry up and tell it. I’m not getting any younger here.”
“Very well. Before I became your Watcher, I was Buffy’s.”
“Whoa, whoa. . .are you telling me B was a Slayer?”
“That’s correct, Faith.”
I’m not sure if I’m more shocked that her real name is Buffy or whether she was also a Slayer.
“So what happened? Why isn’t she a Slayer anymore?”
“This is where it gets a little complicated. Why don’t I start from the beginning.”
“Yeah, cuz this is not making any sense.”
“There were two Slayers at one point. Buffy died for a brief moment before being resuscitated and another Slayer was called. Her name was Kendra. When she died, you were called next. It was unprecedented to have two Slayers coexisting. The Powers That Be later decided Buffy had earned the right of passage for having already died during her service and offered her a chance at a normal life.”
FUCK. . .ME. He was right, I couldn’t frickin’ believe what I was hearing.
“It was an opportunity for Buffy to be free of the burden and responsibilities. She had already served as a Slayer for four years, surpassing the average life expectancy of a Slayer.”
“Four years? Damn, that’s incredible.”
“Yes, she was quite incredible actually.” He stopped and looked at B, beaming with pride. Then he started up his story again.
“A spell was then cast that bound her powers and erased everyone’s memory of Buffy after the time of her death, erasing three years. Only a select few from the Watcher’s Council and I retained our memories.”
“Wait, hold up, three years? Why’d they wait so long to give back her life when you already had another Slayer after she died?”
“Ah, well, Kendra was difficult to work with to say the least. And when you first arrived, you were a free spirit, so to speak. You became a rogue Slayer that landed you in a coma for eight months. When you awoke from your coma, you had amnesia. Buffy trained with you and waited until you were fully recovered before relinquishing her duties, handing the reins to you.”
“Are you saying I was bad?”
“Yes, you made some mistakes, Faith. But that’s all in the past, you reformed when you came out of your coma. The Council gave you a clean slate and you’ve more than proven yourself to be reliable. You’ve been the Slayer now for almost two years and you’ve saved countless of lives. Remember that, when the past comes back to haunt you.”
“You said something about the spell wearing off?”
“Yes, because it now has been broken.”
“WHAT? HOW?”
“We fixed it so the binding spell will be broken if Buffy is ever bitten by a vampire. She will regain all of her powers and revert to being a Slayer. This safeguard was put in place to avoid the risk of a Slayer ever being turned.”
“But she wasn’t a Slayer anymore, why would that matter?”
“She is still a Slayer within the depths of her soul. Even with her powers bound, she will always possess the essence of a Slayer. If she is turned, it would produce an unstoppable vampire with Slayer strength, speed and agility; offsetting the balance of good and evil.”
“And she CHOSE to be normal again?”
“Yes.”
Fuck! I ruined her life, she WANTED to be normal again. If I hadn’t gotten involved with her and exposed her to the vamps, she’d still be happily living her life. Why did I have to be so selfish? I should have gone with my original plan and broke it off with her.
Damn it, things are so fucked up now. She can’t possibly still want to be with me after she finds out that I’ve messed it all up. She makes me so happy though and I think I made her happy, too. I’m just so fuckin’ confused, this is way too much for me to process all at once. I don’t know what to feel. She’s out cold and I want so badly to see her eyes, see her smile, and to see some sign that she still wants me.
But I can’t believe this shit. Why would anyone trade in their super powers like that? I’d never want to be normal again after getting a taste of what it’s like. Being a Slayer is too much a part of me. It was my sense of purpose and calling, saving me from my miserable meaningless life from before. Not to mention, beating the crap out of demons and vamps is a fuckin’ thrill ride for me. I fuckin’ live for that excitement. It doesn’t make any sense to me.
“But why? Why would she give it all up like that?”
“I suppose it just got too much for her. She suffered a great deal through many tragedies at such a young age.”
“Did I know her before my coma?”
“Yes, you two trained and slayed together, made quite the Slaying Duo, I might add. But you’ll learn all about your history together soon enough, when the both of you regain your memories.”
“You really think I’ll remember the stuff BEFORE my coma?”
“It’s possible. Most amnesia patients regain their stored memories in time. The spell prohibited you from doing so.”
“How long, Giles?” A scratchy voice asks.
Giles and I look down to find Buffy had opened her eyes and seemed to have been listening to our whole conversation. She slowly scoots up, leans her back against the couch arm and rests her head on my leg.
“Buffy, you’re awake! You remember me?”
“It’s still a little foggy but I just had a dream about you being my Watcher and training me.”
“It’s so lovely to have you back Buffy. You’ve been greatly missed during your absence. How have you been?” He bends over to give her a quick hug.
“Fine. Great, actually.” She tilts her head to smile at me and I smile right back at her.
“So how long until I get the rest of my memory back?” Turning back to Giles.
“I don’t know for certain. For an average person it may take days or even months for all of it to return; but with Slayer healing, maybe hours or a few days.”
“Will I still remember everything from the life I have now? My last two months in particular?”
She looks up at me with concern and I’m wondering the same. Whether our memories of everything we just shared will be intact or be erased, as if they never happened.
“I would presume you’ll recollect them as with any other stored significant memory. Only fabricated memories will fade and real memories of events that actually occurred will remain; regardless if they took place before or after the spell.”
We both sigh in relief, knowing that what we shared will always be with us. I leave the couch arm to kneel down beside her. She still looks amazing even after lookin’ like she’s been through hell.
I still don’t have any memory of her as a Slayer and I’m curious if she has any recollection of me in the past yet. Giles has had his little reunion with her already, it’s my turn now. I take her hand in mine and give it a lingering kiss. He starts to clear his throat.
“I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me. . .Right then. . .I’ll leave you two. . .Yes.” He speedily makes his exit.
“Hey you. How you feeling, baby?” My other hand starts caressing her cheek.
“Tired.”
“Hah, some Slayer you are.” Giving her teasing smile and she chuckles back.
“So I heard. . .just like you. That explains the stamina.” She grins, raising her eyebrows.
I’m reminded of how I over indulged myself at the “Buffy buffet.” I couldn’t help it; she was so delicious, I had to go back for seconds. I grin back at her, feeling my ears start to burn.
“What can I say? My secret’s out.” Shrugging my shoulders and licking my lower lip.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Right, like you’d believe me. Besides, I didn’t want you to get involved.”
“Is that why you tried to push me away?”
“A lotta good that did. Came running back to you, didn’t I?”
“I’m glad you did.”
“You sure? If it wasn’t for me, you’d still be you, not a Slayer. . .again.” I look down feeling guilty for what I’ve caused.
“Yes, maybe that’s true but I always sensed I was. . .lost.” She lifts up my chin with her finger to face her.
“I felt empty until I met you, Faith.” She looks so sincere and grateful.
Normally I would laugh if anybody ever said that to me. Like I could ever make such an impact on anyone’s life. What a big joke that is. But somehow she got through to me, making me believe that it was true, making me feel so appreciated. . .so. . .loved?
“You love me?” Holding my breath in my throat.
“Yesss.” She whispers and gives me the smile that I know only belongs to me.
I let out a sigh and I swear my heart just felt so full at that moment, it was like her love was filling it up till it was ready to burst. The vampire attack only solidified what I really felt for her. The thought of ever losing her was unbearable and I couldn’t imagine life without her.
I swoop down to capture her lips in mine showing her how much I care for her, how much she means to me, instead of expressing it in words. I never was very verbal, ORAL yes, and physical; but definitely not verbal.
She weaves her fingers through my hair and pulls me more into her lips. My arms wrap around her back drawing me to her, closing the space between us. Soft wet smacking sounds can be heard over the silence. It was only me and her at that instant, lost from our surroundings. This was not the first time that our kissing has transported us to another realm. The intense kiss we shared at the club had the same effect of detaching us from the outside world.
Our passionate kiss is interrupted by another one of Giles’ deliberate coughing and we break away breathless and a little flushed.
“I made some more tea. Would you two like a cup?” His voice sounding a little nervous.
“No thanks.” We answer in unison not leaving each other’s eyes.
“I think we’re gonna go now, G.” I start to stand up and my legs are a little wobbly. I’m already wet from our emotional kiss and I know she’s feeling it too. We’re in need of some alone time and Giles’ couch, as comfortable as it looks, isn’t the place to get busy on.
“Are you sure you’re okay Buffy?”
“Yes, I’m feeling MUCH better, Giles.” Giving me a wicked grin as she spoke.
See? I told ya all she needed was a little “supernatural” healing. I give her my hand for her to pull herself off the couch. Once upright, she loops her arm in mine standing real close to me like we were joined at the hip.
“Right. So shall we all meet sometime tomorrow, when you’re fully rested of course, and discuss plans?”
“Sure, Giles, if I remember.” B says jokingly and I start leading her to the door.
“I’ll catch ya tomorrow. Oh, and thanks G for, you know, telling me the truth and helping B.”
“You’re welcome, Faith, but I think you’ve helped Buffy more than you know. I’m very delighted that you, the Chosen Two, managed to find each other. It’s incredible how things have worked out.” He shakes his head and gives me a proud smile, looking like he really meant it.
“Just allow me to add one final bit of advice? When you both regain your memories, please learn to deal with your past issues, especially you Buffy, no matter how painful they may be. Be honest with yourself as you are now. Do not make the same mistakes that would affect your future happiness together.”
“Yeah, whatever G, don’t get your ‘knickers’ all twisted. The past is the past, right B?” I give her a quick peck and she nods in agreement.
“I hope you’re right, Faith.” He whispers to himself not knowing I overheard.
