Chapter 2
Peaches woke me up. “Come on Spike, we need to leave.” He grabbed the sheet off of her bed in the other room, grabbed some the pictures around the room and her clothes before tying the sheet up. “Get her and the clothes and meet me out front in a few minutes.” He said as he walked out the back door. I gathered the girl in my arms, still tied securely, and walked into her room to gather the makeshift bag of clothes; I saw a hat on the bed post and decided to grab it, placing it in the bag as well before throwing her over my shoulder and picking up the bag.
I walked out the front door and stumbled back a few steps as a massive horse stared down at me. “Bloody hell is that?” I asked.
“This,” he said patting the horse’s nose, “is how we’re going to carry the girl and the bag all the way back down the mountain.” He replied as he took the girl from me and draped her over the saddle, tying her arms and legs together underneath the horse’s abdomen before attaching the bag to the saddle as well. It took us most of the evening to get back down and to where we had left the car. Once there, Angel and I removed the girl and her bag and placed them both into the car’s backseat.
“What do we do about the horse?” I asked.
“Leave him.” He replied shrugging but I felt bad; Damn this soul. I thought. “No we aren’t Peaches.” I replied, removing his car keys from within the pockets of my duster and dangling them with a malicious smirk. Angel growled angrily.
“Spike, give me the damn keys and let’s get on the road.”
“Not until we nick a trailer for the horse.”
“WHAT?” He yelled. “What the hell do you care about a horse for?”
“I care about the Potential. Look, she’s just a kid who was all alone up there except for this beast of burden, and now we’re taking her away from her home to drag her into a world chuck full of demons and certain death. The least we could bloody do is let her have her blasted horse. Come on, don’t be such a prat Peaches.” I said. “I’ll be back when I get us a trailer, won’t be too long.” I said, re-pocketing the keys and walking away. It took me about fifteen minutes before I found a truck with an attached trailer. I unattached them from one another, then headed back to drive the car to the spot where the trailer was waiting. A sulking Angel followed on the horse while I attached the trailer. I then led the horse up into the cargo space, and we finally took off after everything was secured.

We traveled for a day and a half to get from Kentucky to Ohio, I felt bad for having to keep the chit drugged, but she was dangerous if she wasn’t. I had filched some food from a feed store back in Kentucky so that the horse could eat as well. Pulling up to the old mansion that had been converted into a boarding house for the Potentials this side of the Atlantic, we dropped off the girl and her belongings, warning the Watchers that she was a handful, and I took the horse out back to the unused stables. The Watchers had agreed to let her keep him for which I was grateful.
Angel left in his car to go back to L.A., and I took off on a road trip across the nation, glad to be free. I’d had my fill of fighting demons on the Hellmouth; it was high time I left it to the others. I’d been around for far too long as it was, and now that Buffy and the Bit were overseas I had no real reason to stay. The Watchers were training the Potentials to join the Slayer Army, they had Red and the Whelp to help them when the occasion called for it, and they also had Angel and his people if the need was dire. Red and the Whelp had sworn to keep the knowledge of my resurrection quiet and to let Buffy enjoy her new life; they had agreed with my reasoning. So I climbed into my old Desoto with its painted windows and took off without a word to anyone nor a backwards glance. If I could help it, I’d never have to set foot back on this God-forsaken piece of earth again.
