Chapter 14: Buffy and Willow’s Return

After feeding, Xander slowly slipped into a deep, healing sleep. Angel and Spike had drained all 3 pitchers of blood and had both gone back for more.
Spike was lying on his back, on the floor beside the bed that Xander was sleeping in, and Angel was sitting in a chair across the room. Spike crawled over to Angel and placed his head on Angel’s lap. Angel ran his fingers through the stiff gel coating Spike’s bleach blonde hair. Spike nuzzled his cheek into Angel’s knee. Angel ignored him. He sighed and let his sire play with his hair. It was obvious to him that Angel was in full brood mode.
Ten minutes later Spike nuzzled into Angel’s knee again, a little harder this time. This pulled Angel’s attention back to the present.
“What is it, Boy?” He rumbled.
“Sire, what are we going to do? I don’t think he will be ready to see the Slayer and her Pet’s for a while.” Spike whispered. “I think he will have a large problem with all the Scooby’s. Remember what he said, ‘I don’t know your scent. I don’t think I know you. I don’t know where I am, and I don’t trust you. All I know about you is that you are not Buffy, Willow, Cordelia, or Giles. Angel, please don’t make me go with him. Please.’”
“I think your right. He didn’t seem to want anything to do with them. I wonder how he’s going to take it when they all arrive later?” Angel replied, while looking at his watch. “It’s nearly noon now, they will be here soon.”
Just then, an ominous knock sounded from the front door. Angel and Spike both took a deep breath and looked to the sleeping form on the bed. Xander whimpered and turned over on his back. Angel and Spike shared a look and then, they both stood and walked slowly into the living room and the front door.
The door was knocked on again, louder this time; the people on the other side getting impatient. Angel answered the door to find Buffy, Cordelia, Giles, and Willow standing in the bright sunlight. Still hiding him self in the shadows, Angel invited everyone in.
“Where is he?” Cordelia asked quietly. “How is he?” Willow and Buffy glared at her for asking the question first. Cordelia rolled her eyes at the pettiness of the other 2 girls.
“He’s healing.” Angel replied. Spike was sitting on the floor beside the couch while Angel led the 4 friends into the living room. “Sit, Boy will go make some tea or coffee.” Spike stood up and walked into the kitchen.
“Thank you.” Giles replied. “How is he really?” Angel looked at the older man sitting between the young girls.
“He’s different. He’s spent a long time in a hell dimension. He believes it was you 4 torturing him there.” Angel stated. “The only reason he’s accepted me and Boy is that we’re not you. And Boy only because I told Xander that he can’t get hurt. He sleeps restlessly, literally leaping to his feet when someone comes in the room. He runs like the wind when terrified. Boy and I can only just keep up. He has some fairly hefty internal defences now. It might take a lot to get past them.”
Buffy glared at him. “If you can do it, I can too.” Angel shook his head. Spike returned with a tray of cups, a teapot, a carafe of coffee, sugar, cream, and a plate of cookies and biscuits. He set the tray down on the coffee table and knelt in front of Angel, laying his head on the strong knee.
Angel ran his hand through Spike’s messy white-blonde curls, it was obvious to Buffy and Willow that the 2 vampires hadn’t showered or changed from the night before. They both looked tired and Spikes feet were dirty.
“It’s not that easy, Buffy.” Angel said. “He hasn’t really accepted us. He ran from us last night. It took us nearly an hour to catch him. He is well versed in escaping.”
“Well if you can catch him, so can I.” Buffy sneered. Giles shook his head and reached for a teacup and the teapot. He poured himself a cup and silently offered some to the rest. Buffy shook her head, but everyone else nodded. Spike slid his head off of Angels lap and scooted close to Giles. He laid his head on Giles’ leg. Giles stiffened and he looked sharply at Angel.
“Touch his head.” Angel stated. Giles dropped his gaze to the vampire on his leg. He touched the soft curls.
Spike raised his head and asked in a soft cultured voice, “May I have a spot of tea as well?” Giles nearly dropped the teapot at the accent that Spike spoke with. It was soft, without the cockney slang the vampire usually sported. It was similar to his. He nodded and poured out 4 cups of tea. “Thank you, Rupert.” Spike said. Giles sat there stunned.
“I take it that Buffy and Willow didn’t tell you about me taking Spike’s identity away from him.” Angel stated to Giles. Giles shook his head and glared at the girls. “Well, Boy, as I call him now, has no status. A newly risen fledge has more status than he does. Until he proves himself he is nothing, can’t wear shoes or socks; asking to speak, and things like that.”
Giles nodded, “Yes, there is an account in one of the watcher’s diaries of this happening.” He said. He then felt Spike’s head rub his knee again. He glanced down at Spike who was glancing up at him in shame. He ran his hand through the curls once again.
“Please, please do not record this in the diaries.” Spike asked, eyes on the floor.
“Do it, Giles. Write it up and hold it over his head. Force him into being good.” Buffy jeered. Angel’s head shot up and he opened his mouth to say something.
“Buffy, you don’t understand. Spike can’t do anything his sire says he can’t. Meaning that even if he didn’t have the chip and had a person in his grasp he couldn’t feed with out permission.” Giles explained. “If his sire wanted he could order Spike out into the sun and Spike would willingly go to his death.” He lifted Spike’s chin to get eye contact with the non-statused vampire. “If you don’t want it in the books, I will not write it in.” Spike stared into eyes as blue as his own. Tears came to his eyes as he pulled out of Giles’ hand and sat on the floor at his feet.
Giles looked up at Angel who was staring at him hard. Giles dropped his eyes to the knife Spike had brought out with the tray, then to his own wrist and then to Spike.
Angel stared at him in confusion before realization flooded his eyes. He smiled slightly and nodded. Giles picked up the knife and to Buffy’s shock, ran the tip across the inside of his wrist. At the smell of the blood the vampire at his feet stiffened but didn’t move. Giles tapped the seated vamp on the shoulder.
Spike slowly turned to towards the watcher, shaking in need. Giles placed his wrist in front of his mouth. He pulled in a long inhalation of air, but stayed still, trembling, his eyes yellow, though not in game face. He turned his head to his sire, eyes pleading. Angel nodded. Spike ran his tongue across the small cut, face rippling but not changing into the demon. He placed his mouth over the cut and slowly sucked out the first taste of pure human blood that he had in about 2 weeks. All to soon he felt the blood stop, and he licked the cut clean and closed. He sat back and mumbled his thanks. Giles smiled and ran his hand through the blonde hair. A low-pitched rumbling, startled the girls and watcher as Spike began to purr.
A thump from the direction of the bedroom alerted Spike and Angel to the presence of the waking boy. Both Angel and Spike jumped up and situated themselves where, if Xander ran, they could catch him. A sleepy, rumpled Xander appeared in the living room, his eyes closed, brow furled. He was following his ears, as he didn’t actually seem to be awake or aware yet.
He stood in the hall, a look of confusion on his sleeping face. They watched his ears twitch, and then when he couldn’t hear anything, saw him sniff. He eyes popped open and he sucked in a breath of air as he looked at the 4 people in the room. He backed away and into a wall, shaking in fear. Buffy stood up and started walking towards him and he started hyperventilating.
“No, not real, Giles, Buffy, Cordelia, and Willow would not hurt me. They are my friends and would never hurt me. No, don’t come near me. They wouldn’t beat me, hurt me, or rape me. Your not my friends.” Xander babbled in fear, pressing himself against the wall. “No, you are Acathla.” With that he screeched and ran in the direction of a door. Spike blocked him, so he changed directions.
“Herd him towards the bedroom, but don’t touch him. If we can get him back in the room, Boy and I can calm him down.” Angel stated as he blocked Xander. “It’s the last door on the left.” Giles, Buffy, Cordelia, and Willow leapt to help herd Xander towards the room. It was hard, the 6 of them nearly lost the crafty boy twice, but finally they cornered Xander in the bedroom. Spike stood at the door blocking Xander in as Angel ushered everyone else out.
