Disturbing news and unexpected urges

Kara leaned against the wall, watching as her Watcher went scurrying back and forth, looking for the right book to tell him about ancient Vampires. Kara always had a strong appreciation for intelligent men, and had had quite a crush on her Watcher when she had first found out about her new position in the world. She had gotten over that now (She hoped) and made sure to only treat Dr. Bruce Preston with respect.
“Found anything?” She asked when he stopped in front of her with a large and very dusty book. She glanced over at Rain, keeping a stake on her in case he did something stupid. He hadn’t moved since arriving, seemingly relaxed save for taking in everything around him including the interaction between Slayer and Watcher.
“It’s fascinating, Kara! Look, there’s absolutely no record or a Vampire completely losing his bloodlust.” He turned the book towards her, showing her the lack of passages. “How did this happen?” Dr. Preston turned to Rain, who looked surprised to be included in the conversation.
“Oh, I…that is, when I was younger, killing was very disturbing to me. My sire, Drusilla, was this terribly insane woman, and spent a good portion of her time flouncing around Europe causing havoc and pain along with her sire and one of her other childer. After a hundred years or so, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I killed her for being the crazy, murderous woman she was, demon or no, and came here. I like blood and gore in movies as much as the next person…but it does not affect me the same way that it does most of my kind.” Dr. Preston was off, looking through the stacks again. His voice floated down from the second level.
“Did you say Drusilla?” Rain made a noise in the affirmative, then moved towards the table to casually inspect the books scattered across it. Kara watched him, still untrusting, and noticed he handled the books the same way Dr. Preston did. His fingers cradling the bindings gracefully, his fingers elegantly turning the pages…Kara shook her head. Vampire, demon, evil, bad, she repeated in her head. She had heard of Vampires and Slayers coming together, and always thought it was either stupidity on the part of the Slayer, or insanity on the part of both.
Kara pushed away form the wall, too hyped up on the new events to stay here and wait.
“Dr. Preston, I’m going to go finish patrolling. You two have fun.” Rain looked up as she spoke with an inscrutable expression on his face.
“Why don’t I go with you? I might see something you don’t recognize.” Kara sighed. The point was trying to get away from you, but what the hell. Kara closed her eyes to steady herself, and opened them to star up into a pair of shining golden ones. “Is everything okay?” Rain asked.
Kara jumped a little at how close he was, and backed up against the bookshelf behind her.
“Y-yes, I’m fine.” She managed to stammer out. Dr. Preston stepped out from behind the bookshelves and looked down at the two.
“Very well. Be careful.“ Kara looked up and saw an unreadable expression pass over the Watcher’s face. She nodded and quickly headed towards the door. Rain looked up at the Watcher before following Kara. The Watcher’s expression was plainly clear.
Rain turned and walked out of the universities library. How interesting, he thought to himself. The Watcher is possessive of his Slayer…I wonder if she knows.
Bruce watched the pair leave, feeling something twisting deep in his stomach. He was sure he saw lust in the Ancient’s eyes, but there was no way that he was going to let his Slayer get mixed up with a Vampire, even a tame one. He pushed back the thoughts of himself and the Slayer, knowing that it wasn’t time for him to approach her. He knew someone he could call in matters of Slayers and Vampires. As soon as the couple (They will not be a couple, he vowed to himself) left, Bruce went over to the phone and dialed a number he never wanted to use.
“Hello, may I speak to Rupert Giles? Hello, Rupert? I need your help on something that’s quite interesting.” Bruce loved his cousin, but he knew that the only reason that he would have to call him is if something had come up that he didn’t have the information to research. He quickly filled Giles in on Rain and his history, and Giles gasped when Drusilla’s name was mentioned.
“Drusilla? One of her childer is here, in Sunnydale. In fact, I-I’ve been having the same problems with him and Buffy that you seem to be starting to have. Do you think there is a connection?” Bruce shook his head.
“I don’t know, but I think we should go there. Maybe we can figure something out with more information. Summer is coming up…we’ll leave in a week. Alright, good-bye cousin.” Bruce hung up the phone and sat down, brooding over this new development.
