Xander stood at parade rest in front of Angel no, Angelus. Strangely enough, he was not afraid. He knew he should be. The vampire in front of him had gone on a killing spree not so long ago. It had something to do with a gypsy-curse but Xander did not really know the details.
One day, ‘night’ more accurately, Angel the broody was making with the cryptic and chasing after the Slayer’s skirts. The next he was Angelus; a mad bloodthirsty vampire trying to kill said Slayer. Xander figured they had a big falling out of sorts. Maybe she dumped him. That could make anyone angry.
Angelus was seated in a throne-like chair in his library. Minions could be heard scurrying in the hallway outside. He had not stopped staring at Xander since he was brought in. Forcefully invited, more likely.
They had cornered Xander at the Bronze, told him ‘Master Angelus wanted to see him and asked that he come peacefully’. What else could he do but comply? It was 10 vamps against 1 Xander and no Slayer in sight. He went with them.
He had arrived nearly 5 minutes ago; Angelus and he had been doing the staring contest ever since.
“Tell me about the first time your father hit you.” Angelus’ soft voice surprised him, the words even more.
He knows! Wait, what does he know? And why does he ask? Xander clenched his jaw but did not lower his eyes, nor did he comply.
“Please.”
It was the ‘please’ that decided it. No one had really asked him before. Willow may have noticed his bruises and aches over the years but she had never asked. Buffy had not known him for long then how come Angelus noticed? and Giles was Buffy’s dedicated Watcher. A Watcher watches. How come he didn’t notice?
“I don’t really remember how or when he… it started. He always smacked me around; they both did, especially when they were drunk. But this time… this time he was not drunk.” Xander paused but Angelus nodded encouragingly.
“It was the beginning of summer. I was nearly 8. Mom went to visit a friend for the day and Dad was at work. He was supposed to be at work.” Xander took a deep breath and let it out again. It was easier than he thought, to tell someone all this. The words wanted out and here was someone to listen. Even if that someone was an enemy.
“I was playing in the living room. I knew I was not allowed to be in there but no one but me was home. Suddenly the front door banged open and I heard Dad yell for ‘Jessica’; my Mom. I froze when he saw me. I could tell he was angry and my not obeying the rules would just make him angrier.” Here came the hard part. Xander’s voice faltered before turning flat with the memories.
“The first thing he did was kicking me. No, first he yelled and swore at me. Then he kicked me. He hit my left knee and I could feel something pop. Next he grabbed my arms and started shaking me. I’m pretty sure he said something but I wasn’t really paying attention. I was busy screaming. Obviously he didn’t like that. He hit me on the mouth with his fist and said ‘Be quiet, boy’. That’s the last thing I remember clearly.”
“I must have passed out soon after because the next thing I woke up in a hospital bed hearing Mom tell the doctor what a clumsy child I was. Apparently I fell down the stairs while she was away, luckily Dad was there to take care of me.” His voice was slightly bitter.
“I was lucky I suppose. I survived. I had lots of bruises, a black eye, a mild concussion and a wrenched knee. I spent the summer up in my room. Mom berated me every time she had to help me but Dad left me alone. Willow and… Jessie… used to visit me when they could. I later found out Dad had lost out on a promotion at work. I had been an easier target than his boss.” Xander felt drained when he finished but in a good way. His first dark secret was out. Someone now knew. What would Angelus do with the knowledge though? Xander waited for his next move.
“You’re an interesting young man. I didn’t used to think so. The other part of me, Angel, dismissed you as weak. However, I’ve come to reevaluate that opinion. You are not weak.”
With that Angelus arose and approached Xander. He lightly caressed Xander’s cheek before giving him a gentle kiss on the lips.
What the hey?! Xander was shocked. He had expected to be tortured and killed tonight. Possibly even turned to taunt the Slayer and her Watcher. The night was still young though. Who knew what else might happen? Let’s not give ‘who’ any ideas, ok? Xander licked his lips, tasting Angelus’ kiss.
“Come. I’ll show you to your room.”
Room? I’m staying here? Alive? Why? Xander was confused. He had been for a while actually.
“Wait! Angelus. What am I doing here? What do you want?”
“For the moment I want you to rest. Maybe eat something. Tomorrow we’ll discuss your status in the Aurelius clan.”
“My status…?”
“Tomorrow. Now come.”
Angelus took Xander by his arm and led him out of the room, down the corridor, up a set of stairs, down another corridor and into a room. Servants and other minions greeted their Master along the way, staring openly at Xander. He could hear them whisper but tried to pay them no mind.
