Chapter 2: Name Game
“Buy you a drink if you dance on the bar, luv.”
Buffy backed a step away and raised her unfinished drink. “No thanks, I already have one.”
She turned to find Faith, hoping she could rescue her. She knew if this man pushed her, she would do anything and it scared her a little. Faith wasn’t going to be able to help her, however. She and a very attractive black man were grinding away together to the fast beat of the current song. Buffy turned back to her pursuer.
“What do I have to do to get you up there, pet?”
Buffy scoffed and said under her breath, “A lot more drink than this.”
The man heard and left without a word to her. Buffy thought that was it, until he returned a moment later with two shot glasses full of a pale liquid. He handed one to her. She eyed the drink as if it was poison, and the man chuckled at her. “What is this?”
“Just a little liquid courage, luv.”
Buffy raised an eyebrow at him.
“Come on, pet. We’ll drink ‘em together.” He raised his glass to his lips and waited for her to do the same.
Buffy slowly raised hers and they both downed the liquid. Buffy coughed and sputtered as the drink burned its way to her stomach. “God! What hell was that?!” Buffy coughed again.
The man smirked at her and thought her reaction was probably the most adorable thing he had ever seen. “Just a little whiskey, luv.”
Buffy was rubbing her throat as if she could massage the burning sensation away. “That was horrible!” Her voice was a little hoarse.
Soon she began to feel a little warm and fuzzy and knew she was a little on the tipsy side.
“By the way, luv. Name’s Spike.” Spike smiled at her glazed eyes and more relaxed stance. “Feelin’ good luv?”
Buffy smiled at him but felt someone grabbing her arm. She turned to find Faith practically dragging her to the bar. She noticed that Big ‘N Rich’s song “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” was blaring over the speakers, which was one of her and Faiths favorites. Buffy gave in and let Faith drag her up onto the bar.
Buffy began to move with fluid grace on the bar; the drinks she had making her inhibitions all but disappear. She sashayed her hips and turned her back to the crowd, dipping low, so all the men had a nice look at her ass. She turned back around and danced her way over to Faith who was practically giving a guy a lap dance. She looked up, saw Buffy making her way towards her, and started moving toward her as well.
“How you doin’, B? Not so bad, huh?”
Buffy just smiled and danced a little more aggressively on the bar. She never felt more feminine or self-confident than she did at that moment. She looked out at the crowd and saw many men looking at her with undisguised lust in their eyes. Many of them were yelling their appreciation at her. She heard a lot of “yeah, baby!” and it just made her dance harder and dirtier.
Faith stalked over to her. “B, wanna really give ‘em somethin’ to look at?”
Buffy raised an eyebrow, wondering what exactly Faith wanted to do. She no longer wondered when Faith grabbed her and started grinding with her. It didn’t take long for Buffy to go with it. They danced together all the time at parties and clubs; it tends to draw male attention. Also, they enjoyed it because they could dance with someone who wasn’t going to get all gropey with them.
The noise from the crowd grew even louder as they watched the two girls dance together. Buffy looked out over the crowd, enjoying the attention. Her eyes landed on Spike, who she found blatantly staring at her. He smiled at her and she nearly faltered. His smile grew larger and she scowled back at him.
Faith leaned into her. “I think Billy Idol over there digs you.”
Buffy chuckled. “His name is Spike and I think he probably just likes the look of us two hot chicks going at it on the bar.”
Faith laughed. “Maybe, but I think you should do him. He’s pretty hot.” She smiled mischievously at Buffy and waggled her eyebrows suggestively.
Buffy was shocked, and stopped dancing. “What?!!”
Faith laughed as the song ended and got down from the bar. She so enjoyed making Buffy uncomfortable.
Buffy soon followed and had many men offering to help her down from the bar. They were all pushed aside by Spike, who was suddenly front and center, arms out, ready to grab her. She went to him and held onto his shoulders as he lowered her down to the floor. He was staring into her eyes the entire time and Buffy felt she could drown in his intense blue ones.
“You were bloody wonderful up there, pet.”
She smiled and blushed. Spike couldn’t believe that this girl who was so boisterous on the bar would blush from his simple compliment. He smiled down at her, finding her more beautiful by the minute.
Buffy started to feel the beat of the music again and began swaying her hips from side to side. Spike watched her hips move, entranced for a second, before moving up behind her and wrapping one of his arms around her waist. He pulled her against him and began to move with her. Her inhibitions were still missing due to the alcohol in her system, and she began to grind her hips into his with fervor. She could hear him let out a groan under his breath and his hands went to her hips. He bent down and whispered into her ear, “You better stop teasing me, Pet, or you’ll find out exactly why I’m called Spike.”
Buffy felt tingles go through her at those words and her breath hitched in her throat. Spike noticed her reaction to his words, smirked and pulled her even closer. Buffy turned in his arms and looked up at him. “So what is your real name anyway?”
Spike stared down at the petite creature in his arms and seriously contemplated never letting go. “William.”
Buffy smiled. “That’s a good name.”
Spike scoffed. “That’s a ponce’s name is what it is.”
Buffy tilted her head, not quite understanding what he said.
“Never mind, luv. So what’s your name anyway?”
Buffy laughed. She’d been dancing and flirting with this guy for over an hour and never told him her name. “Buffy.”
Spike looked down at her with blatant disbelief. “You’re kidding right?”
Buffy pushed away from him. One thing that really pissed her off was people making fun of her name. She glared at Spike with her hands on her hips. “And what’s wrong with Buffy?”
Faith, who was dancing nearby and eavesdropping, elbowed Buffy and muttered. “That’s a really good question.”
Buffy turned to glare at Faith, before turning her wrath back to the man that caused it. “My mother gave me that name!”
As soon as Buffy mentioned her mother, the reality of the past week came crashing down on her. Tears welled up in her eyes and she quickly made her way out of the bar. Spike just watched her go, shocked at what had just happened. Just moments ago, he had a happy pliant Buffy in his arms and now she was running away from him in tears and he wasn’t quite sure why.
Faith walked up to him and touched his arm. He looked down at her. “ It’s not your fault, blondie. B, found her mother dead on the couch a few days ago and yesterday was her funeral. Her mothers death wasn’t a big surprise, she was sick for a long time. I don’t think that Buffy ever really dealt with what was happening, she just bottled it all up. I took her out tonight to try to cheer her up a little, but I should have know she wasn’t quite ready yet… I’m gonna go find her.”
Faith started to walk the way Buffy went, but Spike stopped her. “Let me.”
Faith nodded slightly and went back to Robin, the guy she’s been flirting with all night.
******
Spike found her outside the bar, leaning against the wall, tears streaking down her face. He felt his heart hitch in his chest at the sight of her looking so grief stricken. He walked up to her. “I’m sorry, pet.”
Buffy sniffled, but didn’t look up. “Don’t call me that.”
Spike tilted his head. “What, luv?”
Buffy looked up at him then, her eyes puffy and red. “That. I’m not your ‘luv’ or ‘pet.’ Stop using endearments with me. I don’t know you well enough to be endeared to you.”
Spike smiled gently, and thought that she couldn’t be any more wrong. Each little bit more he saw of her, learned of her, endeared her to him.
He reached out and cradled her face in his hand, wiping away her tears with his thumb. She closed her eyes, appreciating any comfort she could get at this moment. He, then, pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her. Buffy buried her face in his chest, not sure why she felt so safe in the arms of a man she met just hours ago.
“I’m sorry about your mum.” He whispered into her hair. She clutched him tighter at his words.
Spike felt a tap on his shoulder. He pulled away from Buffy, reluctantly, and found Faith standing next to him, looking with concern at Buffy.
Buffy sniffled. “I’m okay, Faith.”
She nodded and looked up at Spike for a second, before turning back to her friend. “You going to be okay if I…” She looked back significantly at Robin standing behind her, waiting.
Buffy smiled weakly. “Yeah go ahead.”
Faith nodded and turned back to Spike. “Take care of her tonight for me, k?”
Spike smiled at the brunette woman and Faith left to join Robin.
Spike turned to Buffy. “What do you wanna do, pe..Buffy? The bar’s closin’.”
Buffy hugged her arms to her, looking very frail and vulnerable. “I don’t know. I don’t want to go home… too many memories right now.”
Buffy looked up at him with a look of pleading in her eyes. “Can I go to your place tonight?”
Spike smiled down at her. “Of course, pet.”
