End of Chapter 1

Buffy was being given a second chance in a new world, and she didn’t need all the baggage from previous lives bogging her down. There was going to be enough for the young champion to deal with in this realm for it held old friends and old enemies along with a whole new crop of both she was going to encounter.

Chapter 2 – Awakening

Everything came over her in a rush like riding a rollercoaster. One moment she was cradled in darkness the next she was hurtling toward the light and awareness. The scents hit her first sterile, and medicinal very abrasive. The light was blinding even with her eyes closed she fought to keep them sealed shut but they fluttered open. Everything around her was a vivid blur the effect painful and she squeezed her eyes shut wishing the darkness would envelop her again.

“Oh my goodness,” Nurse Benefield, breathed leaning over the girl unable to believe her eyes. Since she started at the hospital three years ago Miss Summers had been in a coma, they called her sleeping beauty. Leaning over she hit the alarm button to call for a doctor.

Dr. Lillian responded to the call not just because she was on duty but because of whom it concerned. The girl wasn’t a shifter that much she knew when she had started at the hospital the girl’s progress was what interested her. Unlike other cases there were no signs of physical deterioration her muscle tone remained the same as the first day she arrived at the hospital.

Lillian glanced up as Lt. Storr walked into the room. Lillian had never met Buffy’s mother but she knew through gossip that Joyce Summers had appointed the Lt., as the girl’s guardian. Girl, she kept thinking of her that way but she was 19 years old legally an adult.

“They told me she was awake.” Dolph glanced up at Dr. Lillian they had become acquainted over the past few years after the doctor took over Buffy’s care.

“She was for a little while I had to give her a sedative she became agitated and for someone who’s been lying in a hospital bed she is quite a strong little thing.” Lillian smiled at Dolph gently. “She is going to be fine.”

A few hours later,

Dolph sat in the same spot sure they must have been mistaken then his breath caught as the girl lying before him eyes fluttered open. After a moment she turned her head slightly toward him.

“Who are you?” Buffy asked staring at the blond haired, blue eyed man sitting next to her bed. She didn’t remember much but she was sure she had never seen him before.

“Lt Rudolph Storr, or as my friends like to call me Dolph,” giving her a soft smile he was gifted with sight of those incredible green eyes.

Buffy smiled she may not know the face, but she remembered for it had been a constant companion.

“Dr. Lillian tells me you don’t remember much about what happened the night you were attacked.” Dolph prodded gently.

“No.” Buffy sighed as much as she tried she remembered nothing. “I know my name, my birthdate, and tons of other useless information. I can tell you the color of the house I lived in, but I can’t tell you any of my friend’s names.”

Dolph reached out gently sliding his hand over hers, so tiny he thought as his hand engulfed hers. “The doctors say it may come back to you in time.”

“May,” Buffy smiled sadly. “Which means they have no idea,” Glancing down at the hand covering her own it was something a parent would do to comfort a child.

“My parents,” Buffy asked meeting his gentle gaze.

“Your parents are both gone. Your mother passed away about two years ago, and your father about a year before that.” Dolph wasn’t sure if he should be telling her all this but the truth seemed the best course. He left out that when her father passed away all his money went into a trust for Buffy.

After Joyce’s passing it was overseen by some law firm in New York. They paid Buffy’s bills and Dolph as her guardian was sent regular statements and knew she wouldn’t have to worry about money for the rest of her life.

“I don’t remember them.” Buffy whispered tears forming not only at the loss she felt because her parents were gone but because she had no recollection of them.

“I have pictures and everything that was your mothers is in storage when your better we can go take a look and see if something there doesn’t jog your memory.” Dolph felt her clutching at his hand.

“Why are you here?” Buffy asked wondering why this policeman knew so many details about her life, and why his voice seemed so familiar.

“I was assigned to your case, I can’t explain why but I felt responsible because I was unable to help you.” Dolph knew he was explaining it right but he just couldn’t how could you explain something like this. “I felt responsible, I was visiting one day met your mom, my wife and Joyce that’s your mom became best friends. When your mom got sick, she had a brain tumor she asked if we would be your guardians and we agreed.” Dolph could see from the expression on her face that he had given her too much information. “Just know that we are here for you Buffy.”

Two weeks later………

Dr Lillian watched as Buffy effortlessly performed the physical tasks asked of her. The girl’s progress was unheard of remarkable most of the staff whispered, and decidedly unnatural. Glancing over at Dolph and Lucille Storr she saw the concern on Dolph’s face.

“I am going to join Buffy.” Lucille smiled; she could feel the tension in the room and didn’t want to hear the Dr’s concerns. Buffy was awake and healthy who cared if her recovery was moving far to fast.

“Did the tests come back?” Dolph asked his gaze focused on Buffy not Lillian.

“They were negative she is not a were.” Lillian had been certain she wasn’t but after the rumors began to fly around the hospital and Dolph heard them he had insisted upon the test. They explained to Buffy their concerns and she consented.

“Then she is human.” Dolph stated, and his tone was a little offensive to Lillian who lived a secret life because she was were-rat.

“All tests point to that.” Lillian responded, “At this rate she will be ready to go home by the end of the week.”

Dolph relaxed since the idea that Buffy maybe a were had come up he wasn’t sure how he was going to handle it, but he would have coped somehow. He had been tempted to ask Anita a few questions but chose not to because that would result in her asking questions. He knew that Buffy’s recovery wasn’t a miracle but if all the tests the Doctor had run so far hadn’t shown anything else then that was that.

“I am going to recommend a therapist that will be able to help you ease Buffy back into the mainstream she was 15 when she came here she’s missed a lot she will need time to adjust.” Pulling out Dr. Winifred Burkle’s card she handed it over to the Lt.

“A lot of people write Dr. Burkle off because she is so young, but I have seen her help quite a few people.” Lillian wasn’t friendly with Dr. Burkle but she knew that Dr. Burkle took on non-human patients and though very young she had helped a few members of Lillian’s pack deal with their new lives.

“I will think about it.” Dolph smiled at the doctor she had been a great help over the past week and he appreciated it. “Looks like there all done, thanks for all you’re help doctor.”

Lillian waited until Dolph was out the door before she flicked on the monitor that was monitoring Buffy’s reflexes. The girl moved faster than a were, making her wonder if she was faster than a vampire.

Buffy glanced up as Dolph came in the room, a big grin spreading across her face. “Did the doctor tell you I can leave in a few days?”

“Yes she did.” Dolph couldn’t help but respond to that smile despite the horrible night that ran into today one that involved Anita which always ended in bloodshed in one form or another.

“Buffy, Dolph and I were talking and we were thinking that you could move in with us for a while. The boys are both out of the house there’s so much room you could keep me company.” Lucille wasn’t sure if Dolph had wanted to mention it yet glancing over she met his gaze and glanced back at Buffy.

Buffy glanced between the two people before her, without them she would be alone in this world. Though she had only known them a few days she felt as if she had known them her whole life.

Dolph tensed up as he watched Buffy’s green eyes fill with tears. “I would love to.” The girl whispered and threw herself into Lucille’s arms. Dolph found himself moving closer to them gently sliding an arm around Buffy and the other around Lucille.

Dr. Lillian watched the entire scene, she hadn’t told Rafael the King of the Were-rats about Buffy yet and she didn’t plan on it. The girl wasn’t an were so it wasn’t pack business. But she planned on keeping in contact with the girl there was just something about her that sent every fiber of Lillian’s other side on edge. It was similar to the alarm she felt when she encountered other were’s she considered predators.

Buffy glanced around the hospital room that she had occupied for sometime. It was time to move on and the Storr’s were offering her not only a place to stay but she had a feeling they were giving her the opportunity to become part of their family. It was time to get out into the world, and live her life.
