Chapter 2

"Spike?" Dawn called softly as she pushed open the door of the crypt. Seeing Spike slumped in his chair she decided to wake him up with a scare and crept over to him. Drawing in a breath to scream in his ear Dawn almost choked on the bruising around his face. It was obvious who had done this.

Buffy.

Taking the practically empty bottle of whisky out of his hand she screwed the top on and shoved it on top of the sarcophagus while she shook Spike awake.

Spitting out the taste of his own blood Spike sat upright, allowing Dawn to see the bruises that stretched from under his chin to his collar bone. She swallowed the bile that rose up in her throat and the fear in her heart that her sister could do that to someone as harmless as Spike and perched herself on the arm of his chair with a false smile plastered across her face.

"You have to get of here." Dawn told him solemnly, handing him back the bottle for him to finish off. "Seriously Spike. She's gonna kill you if you stay here."

"Nowhere else." He mumbled sadly.

"Where did you stay before the crypt?"

"Bad memories. Factory. Mansion. Can't go back there." He told her, words tumbling out between mouthfuls of the alcohol.

"Don't you have any money? Anything to sell?" She pushed. "Anything?"

Setting down the bottle carefully he gave her a kiss on the forehead. "You're a genius Nibblet."

"I know." She preened, "Why?"

"Remember that Gem of Amarra?" He jumped up from his chair almost knocking Dawn to the ground. "There were thousands of dollars of jewellery in there. I can sell it!"

Dawn grinned. "Let's go!" She whooped.

Following Spike down the underground tunnel she winced and ran faster as she heard her sister's voice from within the crypt.

"Up there, Bit," Spike directed as he gave her a leg up, following her into the dark tomb. Standing up and taking a look around Spike watched as Dawn's mouth hung open as she tried to form words. She gave up, pointing instead at the mounds of gold and gems piled up around the skull-less skeleton.

"Fill your pockets and bag." Spike instructed as he began to hoard the loot in his duster pockets. Dawn proceeded to steal as much as she could possibly carry. She filled her neck with necklaces, wrists with bracelets and charms and her fingers with rings before starting on her pockets and rucksack. And if it was to heavy for her, she was sure that Spike wouldn't mind carrying it.

"What's that?" He asked as Dawn tried on a gold and green ring. She shrugged as she pulled it off and handed it to him. He whooped with delight as he slid it onto his finger. "It's my gem!"
