Chapter Two: Animal or Angel?
///Thanks for those who reviewed the last chapter...though i love Spuffy, this isn't a B/S fic as of yet but it could change later on....basically i think the slayer and her pals will turn up...eventually//
"Ssh why are you crying?" Spike asked placing his hand on her knee, wasn't the kind of reaction he was expecting, but if this was hell maybe she had been tortured and wasn't dealing with this very well.
"Get away from me" she sobbed louder, she had to try and be strong, he couldn't hurt her, please god no she screamed inside, she was a weak coward though, he could kill her in instant, she never had the strength of other girls, or maybe she did but she wasn't brave enough to try it out, especially in the last year when her life had been getting absurd at s, es, even when her instinct screamed at her to do something if she was in danger, she kept repressing it because she just wanted the easy life.
"I've done nothing wrong Tess" He soothed and ran his finger down her face, she flinched at his cold skin and he gazed into her eyes. She was a lost soul, not really a woman still a child, he wished he was stronger so he could help her up from the floor, seeing her reminded him of old friends, she was young like Dawnie and scared, petrified like Buffy had been when she had been dragged back to Sunnydale from heaven.
"How do you know my name?" she accused brushing his hands away, she wiped her tears with the back on her hand,
"One of the others said it, I'm Spike" he introduced himself, he was trying his best to stay awake but whatever they had done to him was kicking in again and he stumbled back slightly from her, what was wrong with him?
"Spike" Tess paused and pondered his name, sounddealdeal for a killer, vicious, if her heart wasn't beating so fast already it would had speeded up at his name "Could you do this quickly then, at least give me that, no torture just kill me"
"And what do you think I'm going to do bite you?" He chuckled, he was going to have to tell her he was a vampire with a soul and wouldn't harm an innocent human as he figured her out to be, and she wouldn't believe him, people rarely did.
"Is that how you kill your victims?" she grimaced, biting, sounded like a cannibal, fuck the others for choosing her, she wished she never applied for that stupid job better collecting benefits for the rest of her life rather than be subjected to this.
"Well pet its how vampires kill people, unless you've been reading an alternative version" he shock his head then felt nauseous and decided that his bed was the best option, he collapsed on the covers as soon as he made it.
"Vampire?" Tess found herself laugh hysterically, then she forced herself to shut up, in case she offended the madman and he really would torture her.
"Yeah, but I bet that computer thing never told you I won't hurt you, if that's what they said then don’t listen, they’ve got the wrong guy, unless you attack me your safe love" He smiled. See he could be sweet when he wanted to, when he aimed to impress and if Tess was his new houseguest then he didn't any any misunderstandings.
"You think you’re a vampire" she snorted, he was playing with her mind, trying to force her to trust him and she couldn't allow that to happen otherwise he would kill her in her sleep, when her back was turned.
"You don’t think I'm one? What did they tell you girl, why are you so scared of me?" Spike remarked, he thought she knew he was a vampire and that's why she was petrified but she wasn't very convinced but his statement. Don't schools teach kids anything about reality these days?
"You’re a serial killer and a rapist," she declared uneasily and then buried her face against her knees, she knew what was coming next, knew it.
Spike looked over to where she sat and cocked his head in confusion, she didn't think he was a vampire, she probably didn't know his kind existed and she was a wreck of a human being, really was. He decided, despite his initial feeling that he should be honest with her, that he wouldn't tell her what he really was, being told vampires and demons exist wouldn't fill the poor girl with joy "I'm not a vampire really just like to think I'm one pet, you know helps me get girls, like all that broody, erotic, mysterious men stuff"
"Are you crazy?" Tess blurted out, she was convinced he was, only explanation. She wondered what the others were up to, apart from rejoicing in her deaths.
"Sure love I am, but" Spike moved again from his bed and down is kis knees in front of her, he didn't realise it but he towered above her and when she looked
"I'm sorry please, just don't, I, sorry" she berated herself for calling him mad, that was bound to piss him off, cause him to attack her, sometimes she lacked any tact or social skills she wondered how she managed to survive 18 years in this world without being knocked out for her stupidity.
"I'm not going to, I'm not a vampire, nor a serial killer" He lied, but he figured white lies were okay, right? If it meant calming her down, it wouldn't do any long-term damage "They put me in here, I'm confused and weak just like you"
"Why did they say you were then, what they say usually happens?" she asked but slowly she was relaxing in his presence mainly because if he was planning to kill her well, he wasn't really going about it the right way.
He sighed, this seemed like an never ending cycle, god why can't humans be more trug thg these days "I don't know love, I don't, I'm bloody pissed off like you are, if you want proof I won't harm you then I give it to you"
"How can you prove it?" She frowned, she almost laughed again at his obvious anger at being there and also how he dressed, no one had told him
"I can't really, have to work on that" he admitted grinning at her
"But" she began only to be stopped by his hand on hers
"I wouldn't touch you like that" He faltered in his reply, his smile turned into a frown as he remembered that bathroom incident with Buffy, the whole damn reason he trekked to Africa to gain his soul "I wouldn't, I'm in love with this girl you see, I just want to get out so I can find her"
Tess smiled at him "That's sweet, really s" s" she wasn't sure if he was telling the truth but he seemed sincere enough. But he had also been convinced and sounded sincere when he told her he was a vampire and that certainly wasn't the truth.
"Do you have anyone?" Spike queried, wishing to change the subject of his own messed up love life
"I, kinda it's complicated, well no its not, no I don't have anyone, yes I want someone, but I can't have anyone" she stuttered, yep another weird thing about her, but was she going to go into details about her past experiences with sex. It was hard for her to cope with, especially as it didn't make sense, her inability not to have intercourse wasn't as far as she could work out a physical or a mental reason, she just froze up when she was that close to having it. All the reasons like being abused as a child didn't hold and the doctors just sent her away with no explanations. Like to them they didn't care if she couldn't have any pleasure in her life, fuck it, only some stupid girl.
"Why not?" He persisted in his questioning unaware of the reality of her situation.
"Rather not say, no offence but confessing my personal problems to you isn't high on my lists of things to do." She snapped slightly, as he wandered over to his bed, seemingly a bit pissed off at her hostilely, but what could she say, oh I can't fuck anyone for like no reason.
"Fair enough pet, but I do want answers. Now do you want to tell me what you’re doing here, what is this place?" He posed his question and leaned his back against the wall, plenty of space for her to come and join him and he had taken a shine to this girl, eve he he knew he was going to have to explain a lot to her about what he was. "Please have a seat, sorry if I fall asleep I'm tired, I feel drained, they won't give me any" he paused he almost said blood but thankfully stopped himself in time "Food, any food"
"How long you been here?" Tess enquired getting herself up and standing by his bed nervously, she wasn't even sure if he did try anything on that it would work, or, fuck she thought if he forced himself on her it would result in a serious amount of pain for her. But on the other side she wasn't convinced that this was on his agenda, he seemed pretty sweet, could be an act but his bed seemed a better option than the floor.
"Don't know, not even sure what the year is, what city, though your accent.." he was interrupted by her, she was definitely from his old neck
"London, Its 2004, July, erm yeah does that help?" she asked as she played with her hands, she looked around the lift, wondering whether the 'voice' would make any orders again, or whether it presumed spike would kill her and that would end her involvement in this fucked up game.
"My old city at least" he stated, it wasn't as far in the future as he feared, only really a year since it happened, Buffy could still be looking for him "and this building what is it?"
"Erm I don’t know, I came here for a job interview and there were eleven of us in the foyer, no one else was about and everything closed up" Tess exclaimed.
"Closed up?" Spike pulled an expression of confusion.
"The doors, the windows, couldn’t escape and laser beams that can slice people in half" She recalled "Controlled by this computer I think"
"Are you sure pet, sounds a bit unusual?" Spike laughed because in all his time alive, well dead, what she was describing sounded like something out of a science fiction film.
"You don’t have to believe me" Tess pointed out
"Look tell me what happened and I promise to get you out" He beseeched, not really sure how he was going to do that.
"Okay" she relented and began to tell him everything she knew about where they were, who the company was. Spike listened carefully, watching her recall the events that brought her here, he was getting increasingly worried as her story went on at their chances of getting out, he had no knowledge of technical things, laser beams though not on the list of things to kill a vampire with sounded like they would work in this case.
"So now I'm here "Tess finished, she was becoming incredibly tried at all her speaking and had found herself curl up into a ball at the bottom of his bed, her words becoming more mumbled as the time went on.
"Hmm" Spike pondered, usual reaction to being trapped like this would be to fight but he was weak, getting worse by the moment, he wasn't sure if they were being watched by this mysterious voice and they had no weapons.
"Good hmm, or bad hmm?" she stated
"Why is what I don't understand, why chose you and the others, and why me?" He muttered, well him, maybe it was these bastards that brought him back from the death, so yeah he had a reason to be here but Tess wasn't anyone special as far as he could tell.
"Well the other are all cunts and I'm weak, so maybe its stupid game to see if the strong can defeat the weak, which hey they can" Tess shrugged pulling herself up and straightening her messed up hair
"You don't have much confidence do you, in yourself" Spike observed watching as she combed her fingers through her hair.
"Well I don’t have much reason to be, how about you Spike?" she realised she knew nothing about him, if he wasn't a killer what was he then, apart from strangely interested in her life, perhaps he lived a boring one and gained pleasure from other people's slightly less mundane existences.
"Me, I'm confident, I could kill a man in a second, break their neck" he enthused, remembering how much he loved to fight, especially by the side of the Slayer, so many good memories. He stared at Tess and noticed she had gone pale at his words and had back away again "But it’s not to say I would, look Tess we need to sort out the issue of trust that you have with me"
"Well you claim to be harmless then say you could kill someone in a second, it's confusing and I have no idea who you are and you could be a trap" she flapped her hands, trying to express how bewildered she was.
"So could you and I trust you" he made his argument "And you know why because I don't have much choice. Look right hit me"
"Hit you?" she responded.
"Yeah, come on, hit me" Spike gestured his hands trying to provoke her into doing it.
"Why?" Tess laughed unsure at what Spike was trying to do, well she say something about today it was unpredictable if not incredibly fucked up, she felt safer in this lift with a stranger, than she did in the rest of the building, he could kill her, or might not but at least he spoke to her.
"Because I wanna to show you I won't hit you back" He explained getting up as she followed and standing in the middle of the lift "Now if I was some serial killer then I wouldn't stand for it, some girl hitting me"
"Hmm, but I can't hit well" Tess revealed, feeling ashamed by herself.
"Have you ever tried?" Spike asked
"No" she admitted but was startled by the lift jolting into movement for the first time since she got there. She placed her hands in her pockets, she really didn't want to make a fool of herself in front of him, she would hit well quite frankly like a girl.
"Come on. Shit come on do it, if this lift opens we can make a run for it but we need to be able to trust each other" He exclaimed.
"Okay" she took a deep breath, he really wanted this, she clenched her right hand into a fist and closed her eyes fleetingly, trying to gain strength from somewhere, suddenly her body took control of the situation and she right-hocked the side of his face
"Jesus Christ girl" Spike bellowed in pain, almost sent flying on his back, he instinctually morphed into his game-face, into his demonic self, it was a natural reaction to him, and he couldn't help it and before he knew it Tess had screamed out in shock.
"Holy fuck!" Tess yelled as the doors opened, all she could see was his face deformed, bumps and ridges in his forehead as he tried to cover himself, her instinct kicked the hell in and she darted out of the lift, not caring whether she was meant to or not, she was terrified but equally empowered by her punch "What the fuck are you!"
"What the hell are you, that punch" Spike shook his head, finally regaining himself and looking to see she wasn't there, he panicked and immediately got up "Fuck Tess come back!
Tess stood in the middle of the corridor she had just ran out onto, like all the other walls in this building the deadly laser beams were present but now she couldn’t give a shit, what was that, spi spike did, fuck when he said he was a vampire he meant it, no, shit, fuck, her mind almost exploded.
"Get back into the lift" icy icy voice echoed
"Fuck you" she screamed to the empty walls, she went to dart left but she could here alarms start to ring and blare and she heard Spike run out of the lift.
“Tess shit fuck” spike fell to the floor as soon as he left his confines, in his panic he hadn’t really thought about the possibility of it being daytime and there being sunlight, but he was facing the consequences of his rash actions as he clasped his head and began to smoke and burn,
Tess turned to him, her head was pounding with the high-pitched noises, the voice was shouting something at her but she didn’t pay attention, she could see he was being set on fire and was mumbling somebody’s name, sounded like Buffy but she wasn’t sure, all she could feel for him was pity and a need to help him, not run away and let him die “Spike” she called and bounded over to him, wrapping her arms around his smouldering clothes and skin, protecting him from the sunlight.
Spike closed his eyes, imagining she was there, Buffy, wishing she would come and save him. He was nearly passed out and wasn’t sure if he was dying again and who was holding him close, only that he was soon back in the safety of the lift and Tess was looking at him like they were both completely deranged.
