Chapter 2
Angel now looking rather irritated at me, spoke in a voice to match his mood. “Well, first, get out of my chair so I can sit in it, second, once I can sit down, we’ll discuss the problem at hand.”
With that, I get up from the desk chair and sit on the couch next to Fox’s unconscious body. I set his head in my lap and stroked his hair as my hazel eyes look around, waiting for someone to break the resounding silence in the office.
“Well,” Gunn interjected and broke the silence with that smooth voice of his, “ we need to get him healed and on the road to recovery, second, we need to find out why he was attacked and last.” Gunn stops to think for a moment and then in a rather surprised voice he says, “ Wait, you’re a merc, why were charged with watching him?”
My hazel eyes look to Gunn at that question. “To be honest I am not sure. A man who never gave me his name hired me. He paid me very well for the task and all he said is he was given valuable information that he doesn’t know he carries, some sort of safety issue I assume. So for the past 2 ½ years I have watched over him.”
“So what you’re saying is you’re not entirely sure why you may have been chosen to watch over him, right?” Gunn looks to me as he asks this, a concerned expression on his face.
“No, I was never given a reason when I was hired. I was simply paid and told to watch over him and keep him safe.” My voice was low and soft as I spoke. My hand came to rest upon Fox’s forehead as Gunn began pacing Angel’s office. My eyes shifted for a second and then looked to Gunn before I spoke, “ I do remember getting a faint demonic smell from the man, but nothing so overpowering that I could automatically tell what he might have been.” Slowly, I stand, gently laying Fox’s head upon the couch. Beginning to pace myself, Angel begins drumming his fingers on his desk almost irritably.
“So, you, a predominant mercenary and vampire hunter took this job with so little information, sounds like you’re loosing your touch Raven,” Angel shot this insult at me as I was approaching the door to his office. Smiling almost to himself at the fact I didn’t respond to it, he continued his line of thought. “ So, the reason you took this job was purely financial?”
Merely glaring at his as I spoke, I gave him a simple curt nod. “Yes, at first it was solely for the money, then, as blondie,” blatantly pointing at Spike, “ I grew to love and care for him as I watched over him, but always keeping to my job, I merely watched and never alerted him to my presence. Until tonight, he never knew I was there. “ My pacing slowly died down as I spoke those last few words to all in the room.
With an amused laugh, Spike rises from his languid lean on Angel’s desk and begins circling me, as if examining me as he spoke. “So pet, you decided to interfere solely because you love him?” As he spoke the end of his sentence, I struck him cleanly across his chiseled jaw line, sending him through one of Angel’s office windows into the reception area. Spike staggered to his feet slowly, rubbing and holding his now rather broken jaw. Gunn just shook his head, not seeming the least bit surprised by my strength, for he had witnessed it before. Angel had rises out of his chair slightly, looking from me to Spike and back again a few times, seemingly trying to believe what he had just witnessed.
My voice was filled with rage as I a stormed over to him, easily lifting him from the ground by his trench coat. “You, who went through the torment and abuse of loving a slayer! You who sacrificed yourself to gain your soul back for love dare ask me that question! “ I flung him back into Angel’s office, rage brimming from my eyes in the form of salty tears. Angel was then suddenly behind me, a gentle hand was now resting upon my shoulder to calm and reassure me.
Angel stood behind me as I calmed myself, his hand lifted only slightly, but I could tell he was still there. “Look,” he stated, “ we have all had our, “ if his face could have gone paler, it would have before he finished, “ problems in that area and we need to deal with the problem at hand.” He slowly walked back to his chair and sat, turning toward the wall to think. I walked over to the desk, at which he sat and punched it. My voice filled with irritability, I controlled the volume of my voice as I spoke, “Can we get him healed and then think about the course of action!”
Then, a small voice from behind me spoke up, a slight quiver to it as she spoke, it was Fred. She was kneeling down by the couch, holding Fox’s hand, her body quivering along with her voice, “Raven, he’s dead.”
