Chapter 2

Faith was sitting Indian style on the couch, reading a magazine when Wesley came in. She looked up and smiled at him and he swore his heart stopped.
“You’re back late. Everything alright?”
He nodded, shrugging his jacket off and laying i the the chair next to the door.
“Fine, fine.” he answered as he sat down next to her. “Just got a little too involved in some research.”
She laughed. “You always get too involved.” She pointed to the kitchen. “I ordered Chinese, it’s in the fridge.”
He sighed and shook his head. “I’ll eat later, I- I need to talk to you.”
She set her magazine down on the coffee table and turned to face him. “What’s up?”
He took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “I’m not quite sure how to go about saying this, but…” he sighed once more, closing his eyes a moment. When he opened them he reached for her hand, lightly clasping it in his own.
She smiled nervously. “You’re startin’ to scare me, Wes.”
“Faith, I’ve been thinking- a lot- about things. You, me, rela-“ he stopped himself, sighing in frustration.
“I’m not going to beat around the bush here. Faith…”
She looked at him, waiting for him to continue. “Yeah?”
“Faith, I’m in love with you.”
She narrowed her eyes at him, confused. “What?”
“I’m in love with you.”
She chuckled nervously, the nervous smile beginning to fade as the reality of what he’d just said hit her. He wasn’t joking. She looked away, her smile gone, no expression on her face.
He looked at her painfully, praying he hadn’t just made the biggest mistake of his life. “Please say something.” he whispered, watching her intently.
She didn’t answer at first, just stared at the floor. Finally she looked at him, eyes blank.
“I-I have to go.” she slowly stood up.
He reached for her, but she moved from his reach, grabbing his jacket without realizing it. She checked the pocket, pulling out a stake and slipping it up the sleeve when she put it on.
“Faith, I-“
“I should patrol.” She interrupted and opened the door. She stepped out into the hall and glanced back at him quickly. “I won’t be long. Hour or so.”
And with that, she shut the door and made her way out onto the dark streets.
