Solace

Buffy sat numbly in her hospital bed, staring into space. She had a broken right arm but other than that, only minor cuts and bruises. They were keeping her overnight for observation due to her trauma and shock however. She hated hospitals.

She hadn't spoken a word since the ambulence brought her to the hospital. She just sat there, staring ahead. Only nodding, yes or no when asked a question by the doctors or nurses. She listened to the other cries around her from other victims of the accident. Tears of pain and tears of joy from family members finding out their loved ones were going to be alright.

A few moments later, another man was brought in. He was kicking and screaming for someone. He was strapped down to the bed next to hers and mildly sedated so he would calm down. Only a thin curtain separated them but that had been moved a bit and she could see him clearly. He was covered in dirt and blood but she could tell, underneath it all, that he was a handsome man. His face was distorted now in pain though. Not pain from physical wounds but mental anguish.

She overheard a nurse and doctor talking about him. His wife had been killed in the accident, one of only two dead among many wounded. She looked back over at the man. She knew exactly what he was going through.

Buffy waited until the doctor and nurse moved onto someone else and then quietly slipped from her bed and walked over to the man next to her. She pulled a chair up to his bedside with her good arm and sat down, taking one of his hands in hers. She held his hand and leaned her head back on the chair and drifted to sleep.

Buffy was woken up by a nurse gently shaking her shoulder.

"Miss? Do you know this man?" the nurse asked.

"No...I...just...I'm sorry...I just..." Buffy went silent again and stood and moved back to her bed.

Buffy didn't see the man open his eyes and watch her move away. He watched her curiously and wondered why she had been holding his hand.

The nurse turned her attention back to the man who had come out of his sedation.

"Sir, I'm here to clean you up and check for cuts or lacerations. I'm going to have emovemove your clothing and get you into a hospital gown. Do you think you're calm enough now for us to release you from the restraints?" she said to him.

"Yes. I'm sorry about my behavior before. I didn't mean...." he faltered.

"It's alright, Sir. We understand. We had to sedate you for your own good so you didn't hurt yourself or anyone else." she informed him.

"I know." he said softly, looking down in shame of how he had lost control.

The nurse removed his restraints and helped him out of his soiled clothing and into a hospital gown. She cleaned and bandaged several minor cuts and scrapes and informed him they would be keeping him overnight.

"Wait..." Spike called to the nurse before she left.

"Yes?" she replied.

"My...wife...where is she?" he swallowed hard.

"She is with the coroner right now. Both the victims who died in the accident were taken to the coroner. There are police in the waiting room who have been getting information from all the accident victims. They will want to speak with you before you are checked out tomorrow. They will have more information on what you need to do for...the arrangements" she explained to him.

"Only two dead?" Spike questioned.

"Yes...a lot wounded but just two dead" the nurse, visibly uncomfortable with this line of questioning by the husband of one of the deceased.

"Who else died besides my wife?" Spike just felt a morbid need to know.

"I really shouldn't be talking about this..." the nurse sighed then motioned to the curtained off section to his right. "The lady next to you lost her husband. She was the one in here holding your hand. I thought you two knew each other at first."

"I've never met her before. Thank you for telling me" Spike rested his head back on the pillow as the nurse finally left.

Spike sighed and looked over at the curtain. He could see a figure silhouetted behind it.

"I know you're there. You can come back out now." he said loud enough for his peeping tom to hear.

Buffy peeked her head around the curtain.

"Ssssorry....I...didn't mean to pry....I...I'll just go now.." she stuttered.

"You can stay....if you want." Spike told her trying to appear indifferent.

"I just...I hate hospitals...I don't want to sit alone....can I sit with you?" Buffy's lower lip jutted out and she felt tears begin to fall again.

He sure as hell didn't want to be alone righw eiw either and as he watched her cry, his tears surfaced also.

"O.K." was all he could say.

Buffy walked over and sat back down in the chair by the bed.

Buffy and Spike both sighed in unison after several minutes. They continued sitting, silently offering solace to each other. Sometimes no words are needed.
