Chapter Two

They sat on a bench eating corndogs and drinking lemonade like it was something they’d done together before. The conversation between them up until now had only been
trivial. Little unimportant details were added here and there for filler, but neither one would open up.

Faith remembered the last time something had felt this right, and it scared her. The easy silence and electricity she felt now was reminiscent of a particular night at the Bronze when she and Buffy had danced until they couldn’t anymore.

*Shake it off girl, way too complicated* the little voice inside Faith’s head was speaking to her, but she was confused about the role it was playing.

She tried to explain the feeling away by rationalizing. It was hormones; she hadn’t had any touch in quite a while. Somehow that solution didn’t fit the bill, because her heart kept jumping every time Max glanced at her with a semi-serious look that said ‘we understand each other’.

Max on the other hand was fighting an internal battle all her own. She sensed there was more to her raven-haired companion than just her looks. Faith’s confident, easy going style had her captivated and intrigued. The complexity within those rich, brown eyes couldn’t be deciphered in one day, and she wanted so much to solve the puzzle.

“I’m just curious, where did you learn to drive a motorcycle like that
Faith?” Max inquired.

“I wouldn’t say I learned it any where, I just catch on fast is all. That’s a nice bike though, always wanted ta push one of em’.”

“That was your first time on a Ninja?” Max asked increduously.

“Yeah, no biggie; the ride’s pretty smooth if you can handle the jolt.”

Max smiled broadly wondering if there was anything this enigma standing in front of her couldn’t do. “You’re damned good for a first timer.”

Faith looked at her with a smile that promised unspoken wickedness, “Yeah, someone told me that once, a long time ago.”

Max felt the slightest hint of a blush creeping onto her face, as she weighed the implication of Faith’s statement. She shook it off and stood up, stretching her body to its full length.

“I ate too much, walk with me?” she asked of Faith.

Faith was momentarily distracted with how much she resembled a cat sunning itself in a windowsill. “Sure, that’s cool.”

The sun was fading into the horizon leaving traces of burnt orange, tea rose pink, and cornflower blue as remnants of the day. The warm saltwater caressed their toes as they strolled along the shoreline just beyond the water’s edge. The ocean held so many secrets that no one would ever know, buried there; never to resurface.

It was a mission statement for their lives, and they were both troubled by spectors of terrible memories that were far too real. So they walked, grasping at the ‘now’ existing in the raw beauty of nature spread out before them as far as the eye could see.

The silence wasn’t awkward, and they shared more than a spoken word within the knowing stares exchanged briefly during their stroll. At some point Faith felt compelled to stop, and she did, facing Max.

“I…you’re…shit!” she sighed in frustration.

Max looked at the face she had already become accustomed to, and whispered, “Me too.”

A cool breeze rose up off the ocean, bombarding their senses with a crisp, lush scent of brine, and for just a moment, the tide spoke to them as it rolled in towards the shore.

Max drove Faith back to her hotel, pacing the Ninja with restraint. Those heightened senses were being put to better use. The feel of Faith’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, the way her thighs grasped firmly at her hips as they maneuvered the I-10. The warmth of Faith’s breath, wafting contentedly next to her ear, and the slight pressure of her chin resting softly on Max’s shoulder.

Faith only knew one thing as she lifted her leg off the bike and walked towards the entrance to her hotel, this wasn’t normal behavior for her. Neither was that young woman on that bike anywhere near normal. Her strength was evident, yet her vulnerability made you long to listen to her story.

Max watched that confident stride as Faith swaggered towards the hotel entrance. She projected a thought within herself, the only safe place for expression.

*Why didn’t you kiss me? *

At the precise moment she generated the thought, Faith turned as if hearing and walked back toward her; as if coming to answer. The slayer’s movement was sure and determined as she walked over to max and placed a hand behind her neck, gently fingering her hair.

The kiss was chaste, not meant to arouse, but to acknowledge the connection established that day. Faith touched her mouth slowly to Max’s, barely brushing against her lips. Max enjoyed the assured feel of Faith’s fingers entwined in her hair. They both opened their eyes at the same time before breaking the kiss, and felt each others lips turn into a smile.

“Tomorrow.” Max spoke with confidence.

“Yeah, can’t do without my bike.” Faith sneered as she walked with a cocky strut into the hotel.
