Prologue: Part 2
“Buffy, I’d like you to meet my daughter.”
“Whoa, whoa. Daughter? How could I not have known about this?” Buffy exclaimed.
“I guess he just didn’t see me worth mentioning.” Mary practically hissed.
“You know that’s not true!” Giles said looking at her with pleading eyes. “I just didn’t want Buffy to be worrying about me for your sake when she should have her head on her duty.”
“Fine, whatever. I didn’t come here to fight with you. I just came to see if you needed my help with the Ascension. But you managedI’m I’m on the next flight back to London.” Mary said then turned towards the door. Giles moved to follow but Buffy stopped him.
“I’ll go.” The slayer said and followed the retreating girl.
“Mary! Wait.” Buffy called as the girl all but ran down the stairs. She slowed but didn’t stop.
“What?” The anger had faded from her voice and all that was left was painful weariness.
“Don’t go. Can’t you stay here for at least a few days?” Buffy asked.
“Why should I?” Mary d ked keeping her back to the slayer but Buffy could tell the younger girl was crying.
“I’d like to get to know you. I mean I honestly had no idea.” Buffy said.
“Yeah well it seems Rupert almost forgot himself.” The girl said with a humorless chuckle.
“He was just trying to do his job. You probably don’t understand…” Buffy began but Mary cut her off.
“Of course I understand, I’m not a child Buffy and I also work for the council. I’m training to be a watcher so I understand why he aban…left.”
“I’m sorry. Will you stay? Please?” Buffy asked.
The girl shifted from foot to foot for a moment then turned to face the slayer. “Fine.”
