Chapter One - O sangue é vida

O sangue é vida

As she stalked through the night her pain was so evident, even the stars themselves had to hide. The Slayer entered Monte Da Crista Cemetery, just one of the fourteen that have sprung up around the Hellmouth. The golden haired beauty walked softly as she passed through the row of headstones.

Tonight however she was not drawn here by the power of a sacred duty but one of love. Just a few paces away over the next hill laid Rupert Giles, her beloved Watcher.

Buffy knelt before the headstone and traced the engravings with a trembling hand.

Rupert Giles

He will always watch over us

1954 - 1999

Buffy sat back on her heels and just stared straight ahead until the words began to blur either from crying or her tired eyes, she wasn't sure which. She finally broke down since the funeral about two weeks ago. After she had cried herself out, she picked herself up and walked blindly home through the rain.

When she reached her house she looked at her door with disdain. Her mother had agreed to host the wake at their home but Buffy had no desire to spend any time with anyone at that moment. So instantly she turned on heel and headed toward the apartment she knew so well. Only this time instead of it being warm and welcoming when she got there it had a distinctly empty feel to it.

Though it still smelled of her Watcher it no longer felt like him. Still she held strong and headed up to the loft kicking off her shoes and shrugging out of her coat along the way. When she reached the landing she sighed heavily and then climbed the last few steps idly listening to the way they creaked and cracked under feet.

She fell on to the bed with a soft thud and then turned her face into one of its pillows. It was then the tears began to fall and they didn’t stop until she slipped into and exhausted sleep.

Coming back to the present Buffy lifted a trembling hand to her lips and then pressed a kiss to them; then traced the letters of the love she lost before she even truly had it. Shakily she inhaled and then exhaled as she rose to her feet. There was no way she was going to be able to patrol tonight and she still wasn’t ready to deal with anyone yet.

As Buffy exited the cemetery she thought back on the past two weeks and wondered how she was able to slip away into the shadows so easily. Both Willow and Xander had tried repeatedly in the beginning to get her to open up but in the end they stopped calling but they did drop by her mother’s house everyday with her assignments.

That was another thing, there was no way she could let Giles apartment go so she spoke to the landlord and talked him into letting her lease it now that Giles was gone. Immediately after she went home and packed up her stuff andh thh the help of Oz and a solemn promise not to tell Willow she moved her things into her former Watcher’s flat. Needless to say her mother wasn’t too happy about it but she only knew this because of the numerous messages left on Giles’ machine. As soon as everything she both needed and wanted was in the apartment she promptly thanked Oz and locked the door.

Tonight was the first night she’d left the complex in almost a week and a half. As the little blonde stayed lost in thought and exited the cemetery she never saw the figure cloaked within the shadows follow her exit from the cemetery with saffron eyes.

As Buffy neared the apartment complex she felt a slight prickling at the back of her neck but she brushed it off. Most if not all the vamp population knew who she was and what the current situation was. So the Slayer was in no way worried about whatever big bad was trying to be stealthy.

Just as she trotted down the steps and turned the key in the lock she heard a rustling behind her. Suddenly afraid as to what she might find when she turned around she left the key in the door and slowly turned to see what it was. Her eyes widened at the sight of him and tears began to pool in her eyes.

“Giles” she whispered

A small smile curved around his lips and he merely held his arms open for her. Needing no further invitation with a strangled cry she threw herself into his arms. Still smiling softly he just stroked her hair and whispered nonsense into her ear.

“Oh god Giles, I thought I’d lost you…” she cried into his chest

Still saying nothing he nuzzled her hair and continued to comfortingly run his hands up and down her back. He knew that she was just so relieved to see and feel him that she wasn’t questioning why or how he was actually standing there, which was exactly what he wanted.

“Giles you’re freezing, come inside…” she said after finally looking up at him

“Darling, I have something to show you…” he said cryptically

“What is it?” confusion marring her usually bright face

Brushing her hair away from her neck he slowly leaned in to place a gentle kiss on her lips. Ever so slowly he kissed his way down to her jaw and then down her neck finally reaching her pulse point he gave it one last lick before whispering…

“A new life…”

"Wha..." She never got to finish because at that moment, Buffy felt the all too familiar prick of fangs sliding into her jugular. Her eyes instantly snapped opened, frantically searching, for what she didn't know. She began to d hed heavily on his back but this only made him pull her closer. Finally her hand slipped down into her pocket and closed around one of the extra stakes she carried with her. Being the Slayer bought her some extra time to make a choice, though she knew it wouldn't last much longer.

She knew of her two and only choices, either let Giles take her into the dark or destroy him and spend the rest of her days in the dark alone. Buffy gripped the stake tightly one last time before letting it fall to the ground with a soft clatter. She could feel his lips curl into a smile against her skin. As she felt her life's blood leave her body, she came to the startling realization that she could never truly kill Giles....she was in love with him and she was to be his mate, his true mate.

The new found information hit her so hard she felt all the strength leave her legs. He held her to him by using one arm to keep her firmly pressed against his body. He leaned her back just enough so that she could see him open his shirt and use his fingernail to slit his chest, just below his neck. As the wound began to well up with the crimson liquid, he pressed her mouth to the wound until she began to drink.

Giles just sighed, kissed her crown and began to stroke her hair cradling her in his arms. "I was to kill you, trick you into trusting me all because of your calling. We’ve both taken so many of their kind; this was supposed to be like a punishment, cruel torture. Though I could never do that to you, they’re all already ash in the wind I promise you this sweet. You're my love. You always have been and always will be. Don't be afraid though sweetheart. Soon everything will be as it should. I promise to bring Willow and Xander back home with us… where they belong" He pressed a kiss to her temple. "I love you so, Buffy"

Buffy inhaled the smell of his skin and air around her as the velvety warm blood slid down her throat. His skin was cool to the touch but he hadn't lost the scent that was distinctly Giles. Buffy's world began to fade into a black nothingness, as she felt him move her away from his chest.

Giles pressed a tender kiss to her mouth, a cross between of loving caress and cleaning stray droplets of blood from her cooling lips. He was quick to gather her in his arms and bring her into the apartment grinning wickedly as he thought of her invitation only a few minutes before, pressing a gently kiss to her forehead and humming to her softly, he rocked her with great care all the while keeping her in his strong embrace.

As her life began to slip away she entered a dream-like state. She began to wonder about her new life but in the end it didn't matter, she would be with Giles and that was all that mattered. The last thing she heard before darkness took her completely was Giles whispering

"I love you"
