Chapter 2

Part 2

The gang made it back to Giles’ apartment about an hour later. They found Buffy next to his bed, her lap cradled on his chest. The sheets were soaked with her tears, and Giles, though still not awake, had curled his hands in her hair. Willow hated to disrupt them. She had never seen Buffy so distraught. Buffy had been through a lot, and seemed finally over Angel’s loss, and then Riley’s departure. But she was afraid this could break the Slayer. Although Buffy had never said a word to her, Willow was fairly sure how Buffy felt about her Watcher. It was evident in the way she looked at him when she thought no one else noticed. Or the pride in her voice when she would speak of him, or the way she remained so quiet when anyone else would mention Giles’ name in conversation, as if she was straining to memorize every detail.

And now this.

Willow turned and left the Slayer with her Watcher. She wasn’t needed for the spell. They would tell her when they had the answer.

Tara and Willow mixed the components of the potion together, and then chanted the words in the book. When they asked for a name, the blue smoke that emanated from the potion rose into the air, and like a plane forming words with it’s smoke in the sky, a name slowly formed above their head.

Buffy.

Buffy was the name.

Xander let out an “EEP!” The smoke blew apart, and the air became normal again.

“Did that just say what I think it said?” Quipped Xander.

Willow and Tara slowly smiled at each other, but Anya didn’t fail to answer him. “Yup! It said Buffy. No surprise there really.” She too smiled.

Xander remained in shock, pale and tense. “What are you talking about? Of course it’s a surprise! Buffy…and…and..Giles!??!?! No way!”

He turned to the girls, but they all just giggled. Then Tara calmed down. “We have to tell Buffy. Giles’ doesn’t have much time.”

Willow ran up to get her. Neither had moved or changed positions. “Buffy, we need you downstairs.” Buffy reluctantly stood up, and with one last look at her Watcher and a deep wrenching sigh, she returned with Willow downstairs.

When she sat on the couch, she was disconcerted by the stares she was receiving from everyone. “Well? What did you learn? Who is it?”

“It’s you!” Anya said smugly.

“What?!” Buffy looked up in surprise.

“It’s true.” Tara added softly. “The spell said that you are Giles’ soul mate.”

Buffy was shocked. Her hands began to shake. “What? Me? No, there must be some mistake….”

“No mistake.” Said Anya. Buffy couldn’t miss the grin on Anya’s face, or the shell-shocked look on Xander’s. Willow and Tara both looked at her gravely.

She stood up and paced the room. Her thoughts and emotions were a jumble. She was Giles’ soul mate? Did that mean that he cared for her like she cared for him? Could it be true?

If it was true, she hated that it had come down to something like this. It was not something either one of them had chosen willingly. In some ways, they were having their hand forced. She didn’t like that. She came to a decision.

“Tara, Willow? Is there anything in your books, a spell or something, that would make us forget what happened afterwards?”

“What do you mean, Buffy? You mean you want to forget that he’s your soul mate? But I thought….” Willow didn’t finish, but just looked at her friend.

Buffy sat down again on the couch. She struggled to make sense, because she wanted them to understand.

“It’s not that I want to forget what you’ve said…or, what Giles’ and I are to each other. It’s just that….I need to do this, to save his life. I need to. And it’s not that I don’t want to…” she flushed as she thought of him lying there, hot and ready for her. His lips, his chest..his…oh my…She shook herself. “I don’t want Giles’ to remember, because I want him to freely choose me. And I don’t want any of you to remember either, because then there would be pressure there.”

“Do you want to remember?” asked Tara.

Buffy considered for a moment. She didn’t want to share any more of her thoughts with her friends. This was too private, too personal. She definitely didn’t want them to remember any of this. But she did. But how could she tell them that?

“I think it’s best if none of us remember this night. Let me do…er..well, you know, and then perform some spell where none of us remember. Take our memories back to before patrol tonight. Can you do that?”

“Yes, I can. I know just the spell, and it’s fairly easy even.” Tara turned pages in her book until she found the correct spot. “Here it is. It’s a potion that we all drink. Once we drink it, we won’t remember the last 24 hours. It would be as if we slept the entire day away.”

“A drink you say?” Buffy’s mind whirled. That would be perfect.

“Yes. We can drink it right away, if you’d like, Or we can all leave here and we can drink it, and when morning comes, we all won’t remember anything. And then when you are finished, you can give some to Giles’, and you can both then drink it, and you won’t remember either.”

“Hey! I want to remember this!” pouted Anya

Xander seemed to shiver. “I don’ He He couldn’t even look at Buffy.

Willow interjected. “I think it’s Buffy’s choice, and we should do what she asks.” Besides, Willow thought, if it is true love, it will happen in time. She was sure of it.

Tara read the ingredients of the potion, and luckily between the remaing ingredients from the first spell, and remnants in Giles’ stashes around the apartment, they had everything they’d need. Tara performed the simple spell, and created the drinks. They took the glasses, wished Buffy luck, and all went to their separate homes. Tara and Willow climbed into their own bed, and drank the potions together. They fell asleep soundly in each other’s arms, all memories of that night wiped from their brains.

Anya and Xander went home, bu, but had sex before drinking the potion. Xander tried to keep thoughts of Giles’ and Buffy together out of his head, but it took a lot of work on Anya’s part before the nasty “ewwww” thoughts were erased. Then they drank the potions, and also fell asleep blissfully.

Buffy poured her portion down the sink in the kitchen, but she took Giles’ cup upstairs with her. She would save him, and then make him drink. But she wanted to remember every detail, just in case it never happened again.
