MIDNIGHT AND ROSES - CHAPTER 19

The bespectacled wizard and the blond vampire lounged in comfortable, overstuffed leather chairs, hidden away in a secluded corner of the massive library on the Watcher Estate, deep in conversation.

"And that's the story on how I got turned," Spike sighed to Giles as he held out his brandy snifter to the Watcher.

"Could use another one, yeah?" the vampire grinned as he shook his empty glass in Giles’ direction.

"After your incredible story, I think we both need another," Giles readily agreed, then reached over the small table to fill Spike's glass.

"There isn't much on the subject of claims that I haven't read, and this was... well... fascinating, Spike. Thank you."

"Never told anyone," the blond vampire said softly and gave Giles a weak smile. He sighed heavily again, then took a long drag on his cigarette before continuing.

"Din't take well to being turned. Hated everybody, I did. Ambrose, my Sire... Laureano, my brother in blood... Despised Arellano with a passion... Swore to kill ‘im with my bare hands for turnin’ me after he put an end to my people. Made me a vampire and left me..."

"Was out of control. Finally, Ambrose gave me a few men... warriors with a death wish, like me. Had the goodness to turn the other way when I tracked down and killed the fuckers wot murdered my village. All except Arellano... was always one step ahead of me."

"Of course," Giles said in awe. "William the Bloody..."

"Ain't proud about it, yeah?" Spike lit another cigarette and slowly blew out the smoke in a long hiss.

"Ambrose finally knocked some sense into me before I got myself dusted. Helped me find my way up in the clan to High Master."

A single, blood tinged tear rolled slowly down Spike's sculpted cheek.

"Arellano killed my Sire. You’d call Ambrosius my Grandsire, but always considered ‘im Sire, seein’ how he fed me and took care of me. Din’t have to... was a good man."

"Never stop lookin’ for Arellano, I won’t," Spike’s voice cracked.

"Spike, I'm so sorry. The Council... we... never knew..."

Giles paused to take off his glasses and proceeded to polish them furiously with the hanky he had pulled from his pocket.

"Save it, Rupert!" Spike snarled. "Only tellin' you 'cause of Angel... 'cause I'm his watcher. Don’t want him sufferin’ because of me."

Giles' eyes bore into Spike's before he spoke. He was not intimidated by the small vampire.

"Is that the only reason, Spike?"

"Yeah, so wot?" Spike returned Giles' gaze without flinching.

Giles pulled out two papers from a folder that was sitting on the table in front of them and placed the documents gently in front of Spike.

"Angel looks remarkably like Ambrosius, doesn’t he?" Giles asked solemnly.

"Bloody hell, mate!" Spike growled as he sprang to his feet and batted the pictures to the floor, angry at what he saw. Giles had just chipped away another layer of the vampire's painful, mysterious past.

"Wot do you want me to say, then? No fuckin’ shit, Sherlock? Satisfied now?!"

Spike stood shaking in front of Giles, gritting his teeth and clenching his fists in anger for what seemed like a lifetime to both men. Finally, he had enough composure to speak.

"I did obsess about Angel, when I first saw ‘im. Thought he might be me sire reincarnated," Spike whispered so low, Giles had to strain to hear him.

"Din’t start off well, but when I got to know him, realized I was stalkin’ him for all the wrong reasons."

"Wasn’t plannin’ on fallin’ in love with ‘im... but I did... and now you know."

"Yes, Spike... I know," Giles sighed.

"I also know that Angel loves you back, very much so."

"And now comes the lecture, right?" Spike took a deep, unneeded breath and started to pace.

"No lecture, Spike... As Angel’s watcher, you know very well what you have to do... I *know* you’ll do the right thing... and if you ever need anything, you know where to find me," Giles said softly as he rose and picked up the papers from the floor.

"Also, there’s something you should know," the watcher put his hand on Spike’s shoulder.

"You’re a powerful vampire, Spike, and there are... shall we say... undesirable elements who would love to get their hands on you... or Angel. Just be extra careful in your quest for vengeance, won’t you?"

Spike didn’t like the tone of Giles’ statement, but he said nothing, and only lowered his head and nodded.

Giles gathered up the rest of his books and papers from the table and finished the last of his brandy before he bid Spike a good night and left the blond vampire alone in the little alcove.

When Spike heard the door to the library close and sensed the wizard was on his way, he grabbed the bottle of brandy from the table and poured the last of it into his glass. He flopped down into the nearest chair and threw one leg casually over an armrest, then gulped his drink down in one go.

It had been a harrowing night and Spike felt the need to connect with Angel for a little comfort. He sighed, closed his eyes and opened his link to his lover at full force.

Suddenly, Spike’s eyes flew open and he gasped, squeezing the drinking glass he was holding in his hand so tightly, it shattered into what seemed like a million tiny pieces...
