Chapter 18

Settling on the sofa, Spike watched Dawn intently. She hadn’t shed a single tear since her mom had told her about her surgery. Feeling a little pissed off that Joyce hadn’t said anything until the morning of her surgery, his hands clenched into fists, the urge to punch something greater than ever. He was stuck here, looking after Dawn while Buffy sorted out as much as she could of Joyce’s things that she might need during her stay in hospital.

She had even offered to come and pick Dawn up to take her back to the hospital but Spike had firmly told her that he would be taking Dawn to see her mom after she had rested and eaten. There was no way he was going to let the Slayer up to his apartment until she actually believed he had changed.

Getting up and pacing, Spike drew in an unnecessary breath. This was driving him insane. The demon inside him was screaming out for blood, he hadn’t eaten all day and he hadn’t even felt a twinge from the chip when he threatened Riley at the hospital. Knowing there was a chance that the gem could overpower the chip, his demon was demanding fresh blood, something not even a good spot of violence could sate.

Seeing her mother lying in a hospital bed, the pale sheets and drab walls making her look deathly pale had had the opposite effect on Dawn than it had on Buffy. Both girls were similar in the way they drew into themselves, not wanting help from anyone, but Buffy had been okay about everything, walking around as though it was such a drag to help their mother. She had been business Buffy as usual and Dawn felt that this was an insult to their mother. She herself had just wanted to curl up into a ball and cry from the moment she had heard what was happening.

Having made it through the day without starting to cry again, Dawn was determined to keep herself from crying, not wanting to upset her mom, or make her feel worse. Ignoring Spike, she had retreated into her mind while they stopped at a Subway and eaten and now she was supposed to be resting so that she could go back for visiting hours in the evening.

What kind of stupid hospital system was it anyway that had visiting hours of 3-5pm and 6:30-8pm. What was her mom supposed to do in the day time? Sit and look at the mind-numbingly plain walls?

Going up to her room, Dawn sat at her desk, not wanting to give herself the pleasure of a nap or even a relaxing rest on the bed in case she was needed at the hospital. Pulling her journal out of her satchel she began to write, the words flowing as freely as her tears, for once she had started, she could not stop.
