Chapter 78
Angel’s apartment - same time, same place
*******************
“Enough about me, Pet,” Spike said.
No point dwelling on the past.
“What’s done is done,” he added. “I keep telling Angel that. He needs to get over it and move on with his life. Don’t bother me none as long as he don’t get a hankering to get out the chains and whips…”
Wesley’s eyes widened.
“’Cept in fun, of course,” Spike concluded with a chuckle. “So, Luv, when are we gonna go rescue Fred?”
**************
Wesley wasn’t fooled by the abrupt change of subject. Spike was obviously hurting. The past aside, it was clear he feared he’d never live up to Angel’s expectations. Of course, he wasn’t the only one…
“We should go visit that library where she was working when she disappeared,” Spike was saying.
“I… er… popped in there yesterday afternoon,” Wesley said, “and… er… liberated the book containing the incantation which opens the portal…”
“By ‘liberated’, you mean you nicked it?”
Wesley nodded. He wasn’t in the habit of stealing from public libraries but this was the only copy he knew of and, in any case, this volume was far too dangerous to leave lying around where anyone might pick it up… much as Fred had done at one time.
“I’m ashamed of you, Wes!” Spike exclaimed in what Wesley hoped was mock horror.
“It was in the reference section.”
“Oh well, that’s all right then,” Spike said with a grin. “So, it’s off to Pylea we go.”
“I’m afraid it’s not that simple…”
“What’s difficult about it? According to Angel, last time, one minute Cordy was reading from the book and then the next minute she was gone.”
“Landok,” Wesley said.
“What?”
“Landokmar of the Deathwok clan - Lorne’s cousin. He was the one reading from the book when the portal opened.”
“Whatever,” Spike said. “Still not seeing the difficulty…”
“There’s no guarantee that reading from the book will open a portal. Landok’s reading just happened to coincide with an interdimensional window - a psychic hotspot. The rest of us were unable to follow until sometime later…”
“When another window opened?”
“Precisely.”
“So, how often do these windows occur?”
“I’m not sure…”
“What are the variables?”
Wesley smiled. Spike was actually a lot smarter than he liked to pretend.
“There are a number of factors,” Wesley began. “Some are physical, some mystical… I’m afraid the right balance may not be achieved for some time…”
“Anything we can do to influence this balance?”
“No, unfortunately, there isn’t. Once we’ve established when and where the next window will open all we can do is wait patiently until it does.”
“So, what can I do to help with the research?” Spike asked.
“I’ve been thinking about that,” Wesley said. “You seem to have a better rapport with the Lorne of this era than any of us. I’m sure he knows more than he’s let on so far…”
“You want me to sweet talk him into helping us?”
“I couldn’t have put it better myself.”
“Okay, I’ll get right on it tomorrow then.”
“Thank you,” Wesley said. “Thank you, Spike. I really do appreciate your help…”
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t worry, Pet. We’ll find her. Better get a good night’s rest though if we’re gonna make with the books in the morning, eh?”
Wesley yawned.
“Yes, I am feeling a little tired. Perhaps I had best retire now. I’ll see you tomorrow, Spike. Goodnight.”
“Yeah, goodnight, Pet. Sweet dreams, eh?”
*****************
Spike crept up the stairs as quietly as he could. Not much point trying to be stealthy though. If Angel was awake he’d hear him and, even if he didn’t, he’d sense his approach. They always had been able to tell when the other was nearby. It was more than just a sire/childe thing. Angel had always said the feeling was stronger than anything he’d ever experienced with either Darla or Drusilla. Course, Spike knew what it was. He always had, despite Angelus taking the piss when he’d once offered the explanation - many years ago. It was the bond lovers shared but not just any lovers. This was a special bond, the bond between soul mates. Mind you, neither of ’em had souls at the time so p’raps Angelus had had a point…
Spike’s plan had been to creep into bed without being noticed. What was that he’d been saying to Wes earlier about the best laid plans…?
As he tiptoed toward the bed, Angel emerged from the inner office. Spike stopped dead in his tracks. Was Angel gonna banish him to the couch for the night?
“I’m sorry, Sweetheart,” Angel said as he approached.
Fuck! Spike’s legs turned to jelly whenever Angel called him that.
Two more steps and they were within touching distance.
“I know you are, Luv,” he heard himself saying as he fell into Angel’s arms. “I’ve told you before, it doesn’t matter. The past is behind us. All that matters is you’re here now and you’re holding me.”
He glanced up into his sire’s eyes.
“Don’t ever let me go, Pet,” he found himself pleading.
“I don’t plan to,” Angel said. “I love you, Sweetheart. I always will.”
