Of Birds and Slayers

Kennedy was walking towards the school’s cafeteria to eat something. She could barely eat those days, since Shannah was gone. But Faith had threatened her that if she didn’t have dinner with her, she would sleep with Vi and Rona, who were well-known for their snoring issues. She stepped into the cafeteria.

“Hey!” Faith called her. “I was waiting for you!”

“Hi...” Kennedy replied in a neutral tone.

“You’re joining us? Buffy’s over here, scolding some brats.” Faith pointed her lover’s with her thumb. “So, what’s up?”

“Nothing much...I just-” she was interrupted by a screeching alarm. The two Slayers stood up in a hurry.

“What’s this?” Kennedy shouted through the noise.

“The fire alarm!” the brunette replied and rushed out of the cafeteria, soon followed by Buffy and the student Slayers.

Shannah looked at her hands and two fireballs emerged from them. She glanced at the dozen of students already there, screaming with panic and laughed. She threw the balls on the walls which immediately started to burn.

“So you wanna have me? Come! Kill me!” The brunette yelled hysterically. She saw Faith, Buffy and Kennedy rushing out of the cafeteria, a look of horror on their faces. She lit two others fireballs and threw them to the girls. But, to her surprise they froze in the air.

“Shannah! Stop it!” Willow shouted. The two ice balls crashed on the floor.

“You’re not gonna make it easier uh?” The Phoenix frowned, a sardonic grin on her face. The three Slayers encircled her.

“Shay, we don’t wanna hurt you! You’re not yourself!” Faith said.

“Oh do you really think that? You should understand me, Faith! You’re the one in this room who knows what it feels like to be free!” Shannah raised her eyebrows.

“Being free doesn’t mean killing innocent people!” Shannah stared at her and doubted for a second. But the pain in her neck struck her harshly and she attacked the Slayers. She was faster than them, and managed to hit Buffy with her claws. Some students entered the fray, but soon were thrown away by the Phoenix.

“Willow!” Kennedy screamed. The smoke was heavy, she couldn’t see clearly through it. Shannah appeared on her left and punched her so hard the Latino girl thought her head was going to explode.

“Shut up, bitch!” her girlfriend shouted. Faith hit her friend several times, and finally, managed to pin Shannah on the ground.

“You can’t kill me! I’m immortal!” the Phoenix shrieked with laughter before an explosion of fire came out of her body. She was a human torch, a halo of flames surrounding her, but not consuming her. Faith could hold her grip on her any longer and released her. Shannah took advantage of it and sent her flying away. The Rogue Slayer hit the wall forcefully and collapsed.

“Who’s next?” The young brunette said.

“Me!” Kennedy answered, pointing a gun towards her lover.

“You’re kidding me?” Shannah laughed even harder.

“I’m sorry.” Kennedy replied calmly and shot. When the bullet penetrated her skin, Shannah’s eyes opened wide. She looked from the wound in her chest to Kennedy and collapsed on the floor. The Slayer heard willow chanting some spell and the fire stopped, frozen.

“Will, call an ambulance, quick!” Faith urged, trying to stand up. She looked at Kennedy who was staring at Shannah, dumbfounded.

Meanwhile, in the First’s offspring’s cave, Malaksh was having a hard time.

“You failed!” his Master shouted.

“Master, it’s not my fault if she wasn’t able to kill them!” the Kibonda demon winced in pain.

“I don’t care! I don’t need you anymore! Kill him!” The First’s offspring ordered, and soon his minions jumped on Malaksh. He’d have never thought that his death would be so painful.

Willow came closer to Shannah’s body, motionless.

“She’s barely breathing. The redhead said. Suddenly she frowned. “What’s that?” she leant to stare at the girl’s neck. Faith approached and shrugged.

“That could explain her behavior. It’s a Kibonda symbol, they’re-”

“Look!” The Rogue Slayer exclaimed “It’s vanishing!”

“The demon must be dead I guess...They’re mind manipulators. This scar was a kind of mark you know? It means that one of those guys put fake memories or God knows what in Shannah’s brain. That’s why she came...”

“She thought we wanted to kill her” Kennedy finished. ‘And that’s what you did...’ the young Slayer thought to herself.

“Guys, the ambulance is here!” Buffy called from the school’s entrance.
