A/N
A bit more plot again and I think I’m really starting to bore you to no end. This chapter has been kind of hard to write. I think I reread it thirty times by now and I still think it is crap. But I’ll let you decide on that. And this time I will not beg for reviews!!! *laugh*
Hugs to all!

Previously on Livin’ Life in the Fastlane:

Buffy and Spike spent their mornings away from each other to get a few things arranged before their ride to the desert in the evening. Spike hands his car over to a concerned Giles to get it hidden.

Chapter 16: Another Hole in the Head

Buffy’s knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel so hard that it would have broken if it would have been made out of simply plastic. Spike still was humming some melody she couldn’t recognize under his breath. Both of them kept their gazes out on the open road that led into the desert. The tension inside the green SUV was so thick that you could have easily cut it with a knife. But neither of them had the intention to break the silence.

Suddenly Buffy felt Spike’s left hand on hers, stroking her in very much soothing way. She relaxed her death grip on the steering wheel and turned her head to see Spike giving her a smile. She returned it and focussed back on the road ahead.

“You sure you wanna do this, luv?” Spike asked.

“Is there a way for me not to do this?” she asked in return.

“Well, I could always go out there on my own, perhaps it would be safer anyway…”

“No Spike” she interrupted him “this isn’t your fight, hell, you don’t even have to be here with me. No there is no way I won’t go out there. I have to face my past, and come clean with it. There will be no more running, no more turning my head every waking second to see if there is somebody behind me trying to stab me in the back. I will face him and anything he wants me to do. And afterwards I and everybody that is even in the slightest way connected to me will be able to lead a normal life again.”

Spike contemplated what she said for a minute before he bend over and gave her a kiss to the cheek.

“You’re probably the strongest woman I ever met” Spike whispered those encouraging words into her ear.

“Thank you” she smiled “I don’t know if I could do it without you…”

“Oh you sure would, pet. That’s one thing I’m sure of. I am just another player in the game. But you would have gone in for the rescue whether I was here or not.”

============================================================

“Where are we going, pet?” he started to speak up again some time later “I wanted to ask the whole time.”

“There’s a special place in the desert. It has been kind of Angel’s and my love nest, before everything went down the drain. It’s a huge crater. There once stood a small town called Sunnydale but it collapsed into the ground due to a big earthquake years before Angel and went there the first time. It’s a breathtaking view. Just like the Grand Canyon without the Grand” she told him.

They made the rest of their journey in comfortable silence both of them lost in their own thoughts.

They arrived at the crater once known as the city of Sunnydale half an hour later and found three black cars with black tinted windows waiting for them. They stopped in front of the other cars and waited for any kind of movement. When Buffy saw Angel and four of his “subordinates” emerge from the cars she tried to leave the car, too, but was held in place by Spike holding her arm tight. She turned around and found herself staring into his beautiful blue eyes.

“Buffy, listen to me, everything is going to be fine. But whatever you do, never, never let go of my arm while Angel and his losers are around. Understood?” he asked.

Buffy only nodded dumbfounded. She had a sneaking suspicion that Spike had some kind of plan but couldn’t get a grip on why she needed to hold onto him.

They left the car and Buffy linked hands with Spike when they stood in front of her mother’s old SUV. Spike put his right hand into one of the pockets of his leather duster and pulled out a silver coin. Angel and his backup had started to advance on them and now stood in talking distance.

//FLASHBACK: Earlier that afternoon

“Hello?”

“Yeah, thirteen calling. You need some favour” a male voice stated.

“Right. I need a personal backup of two tonight in the desert” Spike answered the voice.

“What kind of mission?”

“Silver Coin.”

“Targets?”

“Everyone except me, a blonde with me, a redhead and a young brown-haired girl.”

“Coordinates?”

“Trace my signal.”

“Understood.”

The line went dead.

Present time

“Hello lover” Angel’s dark voice could be heard through the desert.

“I don’t know since when we are back to lovers. Oh wait, we never were” Buffy spat.

“Well Slayer, if you insist. I see you brought your little lapdog with you. How’s it going William?” Angel smirked at Spike, who had a hard time reining his temper. Any other occasion he would have punched that bastard into the ground but not with the two girls at stake.

“If it isn’t they great Poof” Spike smirked in return “where is your little lover? Isn’t the police boy feeling well again?”

“Perhaps that’s a question you should ask you friend. Mmh... what was his name…ah Xander I think.”

“I asked him already” Spike continued, all the while playing with the silver coin in his right hand “he said you are lucky you got your little minions” Spike motioned for the men surrounding Angel “because you alone aren’t man enough to go against him.”

“Stop with that shit, both of you” Buffy suddenly yelled, then turned her eyes on Angel “let’s get on to business so I don’t have to see your ugly face anymore.”

“That is not nice Slayer” Angel again smirked at her “insulting old friends is never good, you never know when you need them again.”

“We’re not friends” Buffy replied “we never were friends” her voice grew louder with every syllable she spoke. She suddenly was silenced by Spike.

“Yeah mate, about the business. We want to see the little one and Red.”

“You didn’t really think I would be so stupid to bring them here, did you?” Angel asked slightly amused.

“Well, one can always hope…” Spike replied but was interrupted by Angel.

“But I got you a nice little drawing.”

One of Angel’s men went over to where Spike and Buffy stood and handed them a folded piece of paper. They found a sketch of Dawn and Willow tied to chairs. When Buffy saw the drawing she felt the intense need to go to Angel and wipe that self-satisfied grin off of his face. She started to move into his direction but was once again stopped by Spike.

“What do you want in exchange for them?” Spike asked, his voice went ice cold.

“Well, you know, since I already got my car back I just want one more thing. To destroy her name” he pointed at Buffy “out on the streets forever. We’ll make a nice little race and I will show the underground who ever was and ever will be the number one.”

“Okay, I will do it” Buffy interrupted Angel’s speech.

“Yeah but we got some conditions on our own” Spike spoke up.

“I don’t see you in the position to make up any rules” Angel smiled at Spike.

“Yeah, and that’s probably the thing where you are wrong mate” Spike spat the last word like it was poison to his lips.

“Please enlighten me” Angel still smirked “where am I wrong?”

As the last word fell from Angel’s lips suddenly the four men standing besides him pulled out guns and aimed for Buffy and Spike. Spike felt Buffy stiffen by his side and gave her hand reassuring squeeze. A smirk spread around Spike’s lips while he looked down to the silver coin rolling through his fingers. When he turned his eyes back to the man who threatened him and his lady a trademark number one smirk could be seen on his face that told everybody “Don’t fuck with me”.

“Well you see mate” Spike met Angel’s eyes “right now two tactical sniper rifles are aiming for your head. And if I recall the distance the wound the impacts of the bullets would cause would have the size of a nice orange.”

The Brit noticed the dark and bulky man slightly flinching when he told him he was in mortal danger. It would have been too small for anyone else but not for Spike’s well trained eyes.

“The moment the coin in my hand hits the ground you got another hole in your head. You sure you want that?” Spike still smirked.

Buffy’s mind went blank. She couldn’t understand what was happening. One moment she was there willing to do everything to get her friend and sister back and to take on any challenge Angel could come up with, then she was threatened by guns and now here unarmed boyfriend was threatening the greatest plague to ever arise from hell. They were all lost.

Spike felt Buffy starting to shake slightly and pulled her safely behind him. She relaxed a bit but still was anything but fine.

“Why shouldn’t I think you’re just bluffing? As desperate as you seem you could surely come up with any kind of story” Angel’s voice had lost the amused touch and grew darker the longer he talked.

“Well I say it is like that one movie…err… what’s its name…err… Candyman? Yes I think it was Candyman. The one where somebody would stay in front of a mirror call three times Candyman and then a mass murder emerges from nowhere and kills everybody he sees” Spike never lost the predatory smirk “Everybody knows it is bullshit with calling three times and everything, but nobody ever tried to call Candyman three times into the mirror at home. So you see, kind of a tricky situation here, but I tell you, feel free to try.”

Angel’s eyes had darkened into black pools and he was visible angry now. He didn’t know if he should believe it or not but also didn’t want to try his luck.
“So let’s hear your conditions then…” he muttered.

“First “ Spike spoke up again “you release the two girls when we arrive and them and Xander leave the place unharmed and unfollowed. Buffy and I are the only ones from the team staying” when he saw Angel give a tiny nod he continued “second, the loser whether it is you or us leaves town forever and will never come back or try to contact the winner or try any shit on him.”

“Should be okay with me as you aren’t going to win. Are you finished?” Angel asked his voice full of annoyance.

“One last thing, if you pull any kind of shit at the race, any foul tricks or anything else, same situation as now. You’re dead before you blink. And what is reputation if you’re dead? That’s it with me. You got anything else, pet?” he turned his attention to his girlfriend who still seemed slightly dazed. When she shook her head Spike refocused on Angel. “Deal?”

“Deal” Angel muttered under his breath while he motioned for his men to put away their guns. “You are lucky that I am not into killing some one right now. See you in three days” and with that Angel and his men backed up into their cars and left the desert.

============================================================

Spike turned around and took Buffy into his arms when they were alone again. “You okay, baby?” he asked.

“Yeah, I think so” she answered flatly.

“I think we made it clear to the bugger that we’re not someone to push around” he smirked a bit proud of himself.

“I think so. But I also think that you watch too much TV” Buffy seemed to have regained her persona and was back on track.

“How so?” Spike asked still slightly amused.

“That thing you pulled on Angel was the greatest bluff I ever heard. In fact it was so bad it must from some TV show or crappy movie I never saw. I still can’t believe he bought it” she slightly smiled at him.

“Who says I bluffed?” Spike asked still smiling at her.

“Spike?” Buffy asked when he left her to enter the green car.

“Come on pet, let’s get home, I’m kind of knackered” was his answer.

“Spike stop telling me shit, you bluffed and you know it” she told him while she started to enter the car.

Suddenly she saw the silver coin Spike had been playing with all the while flying through the air. Two holes pierced it before it hit the dusty desert ground.
