Chapter 16
“Hello pet.” He said softly. She grimaced at him, a twisted mutilation of her earlier smile as a million thoughts raced through her mind. He was Wimpy Willy? She had had sex with her childhood friend? And he hadn’t said a word!?
“Isn’t it cool?” Dawn chirped happily, “Will and his mom are gonna stay all holiday!”
“Yeah,” She said slowly. “Real cool.”
Not wanting to upset her mom’s carefully laid plans for the holiday she smiled thinly. Being reintroduced to Anne passed by in a blur, the home cooked meal with a steady supply of wine had done nothing to help her to clear her head. Spike had sat opposite her, stealing glances when he thought she wasn’t looking and ‘accidentally’ brushing his feet against hers. She really liked Spike, she truly did, but how could she like William? It was just wrong! They had grown up together, bathed and played year after year until the day she awoke and saw the empty house.
“Buffy? Would help me with dessert?” Joyce asked politely, making it clear in no uncertain terms that Buffy was to get her butt in the kitchen, pronto.
Following her mom she leant against the counter sulkily.
“I’ve taught you better than this.” Joyce warned, “I don’t know what’s going on in your head or why you’re being so rude to William but manners cost nothing miss. I want you to go back out there and be polite, put a smile on your face and you will enjoy this holiday.” Buffy frowned. Her mom had dragged her out here to tell her off about the way she was treating him? He had been making not-so-subtle comments all night about their innocent past and the night before that only she would understand. He had been driving her crazy all over again.
“Buffy?” Joyce’s voice was stern and unwavering. Promising to be more polite, Buffy took a pie dish and headed back into the dining room.
“So, what do you do now?” she asked Anne politely,
“I lecture part time at the University my dear, I haven’t seen you around.”
“Yeah, it’s um- busy. A busy life y’know?”
“S’like I told you mum, there’s too little time to spare at the moment. Got no free time left after classes, home, pl, playing pool, educating the ladies…” Spike trailed off with a wink in the girls’ direction almost making Dawn faint on the spot. Buffy kept silent, letting Dawn think he liked her for the moment. She had seen her sister’s crush the minute she’d been introduced, well- re-introduced to the guy.
“But you always make time to come and see me don’t you dear?” Anne smiled, Buffy didn’t know whether it was parental pride or a well placed jibe and she couldn’t help feeling guilty about the few times she had come home these past few weeks,
“Oh Buffy’s busy with her training.” Joyce told her proudly. “She’s always skating.”
“I’ll have to come see you.” Spike said, the leer barely hidden behind the words as his tongue ran over his teeth softly, the same way they had been over her skin less than 24 hours before. She shook the imagery away, listening to her mother’s animated chatter.
Tuning out his mother, Spike concentrated on Buffy. She was staring blankly ahead, probably lost in her own thoughts. He took in the slight curve of her lip, the swell of her breasts over her top, those perky breasts… He shook his head, smiling to cover himself when the youngest Summers grinned at him. She had been barely 3 years old, toddling around on chubby legs and crying when they hadn’t let her play with them. He winked at her and stood, offering to get the ladies fresh refills. He was to be the only male in the house, he may as well start off on a good foot.
Returning to the dining room he found that the ladies had moved themselves to the lounge area. Following them in with the wine and Gatorade for Dawn he settled himself in the armchair opposite Elizabeth, well. She was going by Buffy nowadays but she would always be his Elizabeth.
Dawn pouted with her sexiest face when William gave her the drink. She really didn’t remember him but she was sure that he wasn’t that hot when he was younger. Her sister used to call him Wimpy Willy ‘cause he was always crying over things. He was afraid of anything and everything Buffy had told her. He didn’t look like he was anymore she surmised. Either that or Buffy was a big fat liar and seeing as Buffy had been the one to get her into trouble last night, Dawn was going with that theory. Buffy was a big fat rude liar. She glared at her sister, trying to project her feelings with evil eyes.
Spike noticed her and frowned. What had he missed? Flashes of conversations popped up in his head, that night they didn’t have their date, last night, catching her sister at the Bronze. He smirked at her. That was his type of kid; she had the guts to sneak out and still put up a brave front after getting caught. She must have been what, thirteen? He remembered himself at thirteen. Decked out in his black leathers and piercings, smoking weed and fighting the authorities every step of the way. He frowned. Maybe that wasn’t the way to start your teenage years.
“Isn’t that right William?” Anne asked, obviously waiting for an answer. He looked up at her and saw Buffy nodding out the corner of his eye.
“Yeah.” He mumbled to his mother’s delight.
“Oh, How wonderful. It will such a delight to spend Christmas here as well.” She beamed at him and he ducked his head, poking his tongue out at Buffy, her eyes widening dramatically.
“Buffy, would you show William your bedroom?” Gaping at her mother she managed to splutter a ‘what?’ in her direction.
“You’re old enough now Buffy. We haven’t got a guest bedroom here so William can share with you.”
“Can’t he share with Dawn?” Buffy demanded, not caring if she was offending him. It was her bedroom damnit!
“No. Buffy, this argument is over. Now show William where to put his things please.”
Buffy glared at Spike. He had taken over her dorm room, her friends, her heart and now her bedroom! Wait a minute!? Her heart? Stupid mind. Too much wine was definitely not of the good.
She threw open the door to her room and dropped her case on the floor, diving on the bed. Spreading herself out like a star she lay on her front, her chin resting on the covers as Spike kicked the door shut and slunk towards her. He leant forward, sinking to her level as he stole a kiss,
“So this is our bed?”
“Isn’t it cool?” Dawn chirped happily, “Will and his mom are gonna stay all holiday!”
