Bone birds for lovers
The morning silence was peaceful; the morning was the only time of day that Buffy really had to think. Normally she would lay in bed with Lonnie and wait for her to wake up before coming out here.
There were only a few other villagers up and about, the festivities from the night before had obviously left everyone tired and with an excuse to sleep in.
Pulling her blanket tighter around her she looked around at the tree line. Thinking over what Lonnie had asked her the night before. The kid talk had come up every now and then. Sure she wanted kids, who didn’t. She didn’t have this dying urge to pop them out like Winsol seemed too. Damn the woman had six kids between two mates.
Yeah another weird thing…women were seen as sacred and were allowed to have more than one mate. Fun shit…course she never really thought about the multiple mates thing and she had made it pretty clear early on that if Lonnie ever did she would string her up by her toes…and she would. She was pretty sure it was physically possible anyway.
Honestly she did want kids with Lonnie. She knew Lonnie would make a great parent. She was patient and funny and Buffy didn’t miss the longing looks she sent new parents. Of course. Lonnie was no Raya so there wasn’t that whole ‘im a girl but I can still knock you up’…no Lonnie was good and human.
So that left adoption so only way that would happen is if either Old Mother gave them one or they just happened to find a kid. Which wasn’t to far off…three winters ago that had happened. An older couple had never had kids and one day when they were harvesting the woman had found a little boy.
So that shit could happen. Course she wasn’t going to wait on any magical favors. Turning she saw her mate stick her head out into the morning light. Lonnie squinted hard, once, twice and ducked back into the safety of there dark hut.
Smiling Buffy thought about making Lonnie’s morning after a pain in the ass but decided against it. She didn’t feel like pissin the woman off anyway.
Standing she turned and climbed into there hut.
*************
Lonnie lay in a tight ball on her bed, everything tasted like chalk, and dammit she was exhausted. And to make matters worse her eyes stung something awful.
Jerking slightly when she suddently saw Buffy crouching in front of her, holding out a small bowl of some sort of stew.
“Not hungry.”
“That’s nice. Now eat. I didn’t travel millions of years back in time to mate you and learn to cook when lemme tell you…is no small feat, for you to turn down my soup cause you decided to party.” Having made her point she held it out until Lonnie took the bowl.
Turning back to her cook fire she got her own bowl of stew and sat Indian style on the ground, mentally checking off the basic things that they needed to do today. She had to patrol. She hadn’t had a chance to track that demon family last night so she had to today so she could take care of them tonight. Then she had to help Winsol’s oldest daughter finish her basket, then meet Lonnie at the rock wall after she was done painting and then she had a small swim planned for the two if weather was good.
All in all it probably was going to be a good day…if her lovely mate would ever get over that hangover thing she had going on. She didn’t get it, she had friends in college that smoked pot and they were fine the day after…yea useless but fine. But not Lonnie…noooo…she turned into little Miss Grouchy.

Winsol looked up as she heard a soft knock on her hut, smiling she knew it could only be Buffy. After all this time it seemed whatever customs Buffy had been raised on hadn’t worn away. No one else knocked before entering a hut, they just announced there name and stepped in.
Watching as her friend climbed in and walked over to her.
“Hey Winsol, how was your night?” Buffy asked slyly, spotting the hickeys on Winsols neck and chest.
Blushing faintly, “It was a good night. I have two men to keep happy, I always have good nights.” They laughed and sat down.
Buffy pulled out her carving knife and two small bones she had been carving. Who knew after years of whittling stakes she would become so handy? Now she made some of the most sought after jewelry in the village, and whenever traders came through her carvings got a good price.
“You said your daughter wanted a bird?” Buffy asked, Winsol nodded and watched as the blond woman pulled out a long curved piece of bone. Buffy had sanded the bone down and was halfway through carving the handle for her daughters basket handle.
She could already see the carving come to life as Buffy set to quietly begin carving.
“I think that’s going to be one of your best carvings Buffy.” Winsol smiled sincerely at the slayer. Ignoring the light blush and shrug from her friend.
“I hope so; I know how much your daughter loves my carvings. Why a bird though? I thought she liked spear tooth’s.”
“She has her eye on Falcon. They have been flirting for a season now and until Sanas presents Falcon with a gift she can’t be courted.”
Laughing Buffy nodded, that made sense and damn she bet Winsols daughter Sansa was thrilled Falcon wasn’t Old Mother then. That way they could join.
“There’s also another thing id like to talk to you about.” Winsol said hesitantly.” There are traders coming through this moon, and Stones says that it looks like they are trading slaves.”
“Why would that interest me?” Buffy was confused. She was probably alone in thinking slavery was inhumane; at least the others didn’t like the practice because they had lost a few good people to horsemen.
“Stones say that they are trading children...babies even.”
“Has Lonnie spoken to you?” Buffy knew that most of the villagers weren’t to happy that she and Lonnie hadn’t had children…wasn’t like they weren’t trying for the first baby born of two human women but damn did everyone have to say things like this?
“No she hasn’t Buffy, I swear it. You know Lonnie is a private woman. It’s just…I know how much you would love being a mother. And so would Lonnie. Just give it some thought. That’s all I ask.” Winsol looked down at her handiwork. Looking down she didn’t know how she had managed to make such a mess of the beans.
“I will…ill speak to Lonnie about it.” Buffy knew whether or not she said anything to Lonnie it would get back to her. So better her than someone else.
Turning they saw Sansa climb down the small ladder. “Sorry im late. I got caught up at the stream.”
Buffy noticed the flush to the girls face and that could have been the chill in the air but the slightly swollen lips said different. Sending the girl a small smile.
“How does this look?” Buffy asked, holding out the bone handle. Pleased when Sansa’s face lit up.
“Ooh its gorgeous Buffy.” Sansa gently took the handle and turned it over; noticing the way the carving gave the image of a bird diving with its wings spread close to its sides.” Do you think shell like it?”
“Falcon will love it, and if she doesn’t then she is as dumb as those rock heads.” Buffy smiled gently at the girl. She reminded her so much of Dawn sometimes it hurt.
Turning away she thought about her sister. When she had left she had, had two year old Joyce and been pregnant again. Thinking about Raya and Faith she wondered what there kids were like. And if Willow and Kennedy had finally gotten married.
Shaking her head she pushed back thoughts of the old gang and refocused on her work.
Winsol didn’t miss the look of sadness on Buffy’s face, that look was the only sign that Buffy ever thought of her birth people. Winsol wondered idly what had happened to them.
