MIDNIGHT AND ROSES - CHAPTER 15

From their vantage point atop one of the hills surrounding the valley, Ambrosius and his followers could see the end to what his evil son had started. With heavy hearts, they watched as what was left of William's small village was set ablaze. Then, satisfied that his orders had been carried out, the vampire king turned his horse and urged it homeward, never looking back at the orange glow that lit up the moonless night.

When Ambrosius arrived at his castle, he was greeted by several minions who rushed to secure his horse and weapons. Others surrounded the king as he dismounted and hurriedly escorted him inside where his lieutenant and childer, Laureano, was there to meet him.

"Majesty..." Laureano bowed in respect as the king approached, then fell into step beside him. "William is being prepared as we speak."

"I would have rejoiced if it were under other circumstances," Ambrosius sighed. "Not like this..."

The two men did not speak further until they came to a small door located at the end of a long, narrow passage deep within the bowels of the palace. Two devoted minion guards immediately bowed their heads in respect and fell to their knees.

"Was it so long ago, when I last entered this room... for you, my sweet one?" Ambrosius asked lovingly as he lightly touched the young vampire's arm.

"I thank the gods every night, Sire," Laureano lowered his eyes and smiled softly.

The two vampires were reverently ushered into the room where William's body was being gently attended to. The small entryway had belied the enormity of the place once inside. Candles of all shapes and sizes illuminated everything in a soft glow. A large, copper tub where William had been washed with sweet-smelling soaps was off in an alcove by itself.

In the middle of the room stood a huge bed surrounded by pillows, rugs and tapestries where one could sit or lie down. An assortment of fragrant flower bouquets, some in vases and some on pedestals, were scattered throughout and fresh, ruby-red rose petals were strewn over the bed where William's pale form lay. Four of Ambrosius' most trusted servants, two on each side, worked over the small man, anointing him with perfumed oils while two robed mystics, standing at the foot of the bed, chanted.

Ambrosius and Laureano waited quietly to be acknowledged. Shortly, the two mystics approached.

"Majesty," the older shaman bowed deeply before Ambrosius. "Before three nights pass, the demon will arise without sire. If unclaimed by a champion, he will be without purpose and will be allowed to die. Does he have a defender?"

Laureano stepped forward and turned to his king. "I would lay claim to him, with your permission, my lord."

Ambrosius smiled gently and put a hand on the young vampire's shoulder. "I cannot abandon my own grandchilde, my heart. William was destined to be my childe. I have dreamed of it many times...”

As tears welled up in his only childe's emerald eyes, Ambrosius brushed a dark curl away from his face and gently kissed him on the lips. "Do not distress yourself, my own. You will always be my favoured childer," the older man said softly, "forever."

"Would that I could be more," Laureano whispered before he closed his eyes and bared his throat.

The vampire king kissed the claim mark on his childe's shoulder, then lowered his fangs without game face. He gently bit into the soft, yielding skin and drew out a small sip.

Laureano moaned at the feel of fangs on his throat and pressed himself closer to his sire, letting him feel his need.

Ambrosius slid one hand down the young vampire's chest, past the narrow waistband on his breeches, and grasped the turgid flesh that he found hidden there.

"Oh, Sire..." Laureano groaned. His eyes rolled into his head and he thought he would faint.

"I need you to be strong for me, my heart. Can you do that?" the older vampire murmured into his childe's ear as he stroked him lovingly.

"Always, Sire... always..." Laureano breathed harshly as he shuddered his release into Ambrosius' hand.
