Growing Up -- Prologue
December 5, 2000
Prologue
Dawn stared dully at her wall, her most recent poster choices annoying her. Or maybe she was just really annoyed with her sister. Yeah, that was probably it. Spike was gone. Moved out. Her mom was beside herself with worry and Buffy was quiet. Not that she cared. Her sister, big jerk that she is, was the reason he’d moved. Let us reflect.
Two weeks ago, Buffy and Spike had been doing that unofficial date thing with movie and popcorn, Spike even paying. There had been plans for ice cream after. Just as they were leaving the theater Xander had appeared and asked what she was doing. She’d immediately shifted, saying that she was patrolling. Spike had given her a look, realizing she was teetering between being his, or falling back to being the slayer. Immediately she started that fake smile and pulled away from Spike, heading for the cemetery. One whole hour later she realized the blond vampire isn’t following.
Her sister waited another two hours of listening to Xander about patrolling before finding her excuse to go home. So, not completely surprising but Spike had already packed and left. And that’s the last that anyone had seen of him. She heard a knock and pulled herself from her thoughts, throwing on her best teenage angst front, “What?”
A head peaked in. A blond head that she hated, “Um, Dawn?”
Buffy mentally grimaced at how timid she’d sounded. Her little sister hadn’t said much to her in the last two weeks. Buffy couldn’t decide what hurt more, that her sister and her mother were mad at her, or that Spike had up and left her. Not that she didn’t deserve it. She deserved anger and words. Maybe even some curses. But did he have to just back out of her life without a word or a fight?
Her sister’s scowl had her sighing, “Look, Dawnie, I’ve tried to find him...”
Her little sister turned away to glare at her alarm clock. Stupid big sisters that didn’t know a good thing when they had it. Face tightening, “If he means so much to you why are you ditching him whenever the Scoobies are around? Or is that the part that makes it good?”
Frowning, surprised Dawn was even talking to her, “What do you mean?”
“Like on TV. The bad boy thing.” Her voice was bitter and angry for Spike, “He’s not good enough to show mom...like he’s yours...he’s a secret. And that’s what you like. Take away the secret and you don’t want him.”
Buffy’s eyes just got bigger and bigger. Did Spike think that? It wasn’t a secret that they were
together. She was just scared of losing her friends and she was just trying to figure out how to have Spike but still keep Xander and Giles happy. Those two were in denial about her and yet another vampire. Yes, mentally they knew Spike and Buffy were doing their own thing, but when they were around she’d always unconsciously pulled away.
Dawn glared at the looked of stunned comprehension on her sister’s face. She was just now figuring it out? So like Buffy, “Get out.”
She closed her eyes, realizing her sister was right. They weren’t together if she couldn’t openly be with him. She was putting her friends needs over his, just like she’d promised herself she wouldn’t. She turned and closed the door behind her, pulling out the scribbled address from her pocket. Dien had been very helpful lately, even going so far as to point out where trouble making demons had been hiding recently. Buffy also knew she frequented the college library for some odd reason. It was time to see a demoness about her vampire.

Dien raised an eyebrow, arms crossed with an annoyed expression on her face. Not a good way to start the conversation. Actually, Dien was torn between wanting to help, or tearing Buffy’s head off. She never had been tolerant of bigotry, demon or otherwise. She was sitting perched on the cement bench just in front of the library. Buffy sighed, “I know Spike probably told you how much of a bitch I am-...”
Rather amused by that, “Selfish child actually.”
Gritting her teeth to keep her temper in check. Now was not the time to fire back with retorts. She knew she was walking a very fine line with the demoness. Deep down she knew this demon, whatever she was, only had Spike’s interests at heart, “...so, I want to make it up to him...but I have to find him first. And since you probably know where he is...”
She let her voice trail off, purposefully hoping the demoness would just fill in the blanks. But she should have known, “And you want me to just give you his location. Why? So you can convince him to come home with you, only to turn your back and choose someone else over him. No. Don’t think so.”
Fists clenching, “Dammit Dien!”
Dien picked her up by her throat, throwing her over the side bench. Buffy grunted as she landed,
quickly scrambling to her feet. The demoness was gracefully straddling over the back support, glowering, “Listen up, little girl. You want him. You’re gonna have to try a hell of a lot harder to find him. I refuse to just step back and watch you hurt him. I’ve seen the dimensions. I know what you’re capable of. And if you think for one instant I’m going to just step aside and watch you slowly break his spirit until only the vampire is left think again.” Buffy’s eyes just got bigger and bigger. She couldn’t, wouldn’t do that. Would she? But the demoness was continuing, not knowing or caring the turmoil she was causing, “I suggest you find someone with magical skills to help you find him because it won’t be me.”
“Who? The only people I know are-...”
She trailed off when the demoness smirked. Damn it. She was trapped and she knew it. One way or another, confrontations were going to happen. But was she woman enough to take it? The slayer mentally groaned as Dien flounced away. She was slow on the uptake but not that much. She knew exactly what Dien was doing. The demoness was going to force her to fess up, whether she wanted to or not.
