Chapter 13

Spike jumped guiltily as Buffy descended the staircase. Coming to a halt at the bottom she frowned at him and Dawn,

“Don’t you have an elsewhere to be?” She asked tiredly. Dawn stuck out her tongue in response, not taking her eyes off the TV.

“Thought we’d come and keep you company.” Spike answered with a smile. “Where’s your toy soldier?”

Buffy scowled, pulling up her top to expose her wound, not quite knowing why, but doing it anyway. Well, at least he was more sympathetic than Riley she mused as Spike started to fuss around her. Batting him away, ‘cause hello? Vampire! She made her way to the kitchen, wincing as she bent over the fridge to retrieve her water bottle.

“How did that happen?” Spike asked, making Buffy jump as she whirled around to see where he was. Clutching the cold water bottle to her injured side she backed up to the counter, the slightly increased distance between them easing the primal scream in her gut. The one that simply screamed ‘Spike!’

“Vamp.” She said simply. Pressing for further details, he was horrified when a tear leaked from her eye and she wiped it away furiously.

Taking a step towards her, Spike was encouraged by the fact that she made no attempt to hit him. Reaching her side, he tentatively reached out and patted her side.

“What’s wrong?” He asked softly, his deep blue eyes searching her green ones.

“I got staked.” She whispered. “One vampire, I could’ve taken him easily. He used my own stake.” Her voice rising dramatically, she let out a sob, “I got staked with my own stake!” She wailed.

Wrapping a single arm around her, Spike pulled her close to him, knowing this move could well be his last if she chose to lash out. Inhaling deeply he savoured her unique scent, a moment cut short by the glowering presence of Captain Cardboard. Poking her head under his arm, she mouthed an apology to Spike as he gently pushed Buffy out of his arms.

“What the hell is this?” Riley demanded angrily. Out of the goodness of his heart, he had come by to see how his girlfriend was, and being let in by Dawn he had found his girlfriend in Spike’s arms. Seeing Buffy standing independently after Spike moved away, Riley was able to see tear tracks shining on her face. Seeing red, he flew across the kitchen, whipping his stake out of his waistband and plunged it into the vampire’s chest. Nobody hurt his girl.

Buffy was in horror as Spike was staked, her confusion not piercing the haze as she wondered why he was still standing.

“What the…?” Riley began as he withdrew his stake from Spike’s chest and the vamp smirked at him infuriatingly. Seeing that the gem worked just as well as Spike had told her it did, Dawn ran into his outstretched arms, wrapping herself up in his embrace as she babbled.

“The gem?” Buffy spoke quietly, her question obviously directed at Spike. He nodded enthusiastically over Dawn’s head. Looking at his hands she frowned. “Where?”

Giggling, Dawn lifted her head off Spike’s chest and smiled at her sister.

“That’s a secret”
