Just for the record, I tricked everybody who mused about who would be waiting for Buffy and Spike. (Yay for me *laugh*) Thanks again for reviewing, and because you know I am a Review-devouring monster, keep them coming. I hope you enjoy the new chapter although it is again dark and violent but I’ll use my old excuse and say it is necessary for the storyline. Thank you all for reading.
Hugs to all!

Spike and Buffy wake up together and spent a hot shower together. Afterwards Buffy tells Spike that she doesn’t hold anything against him ‘cause of the way he treated Riley. Their morning is interrupted by a visitor…
Chapter 13: Breakdown
Buffy and Spike abandoned the couch and left Spike’s flat for the bookstore below. When they reached the lower end of the stairs they found Giles waiting for them frantically cleaning his glasses like he always did when something very disturbing was up.
“Hey dad, what’s up that you need our presence at such an ungodly hour?” Spike smirked at the unusual nervous behaviour.
“There’s someone waiting for the two of you over at the table” Giles pointed into the direction of the big tea table at the centre of the store.
“Thank you” Buffy told Giles and pulled Spike over to the table. She couldn’t deny that she had a disturbing feeling in the pit of her stomach that told her that something was definitely wrong.
They found a girl sitting at the table nervously fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. She seemed to be Dawns age and Spike mused that she seemed to be a friend either of Dawn or Buffy because when she spotted Buffy a small smile reached her lips.
“Hi, Janice” Buffy returned the younger girls smile “what’s up and by the way, how did you know I was here?”
“Well “Janice began to speak“I didn’t exactly know that you were here. Dawn just told me that you have a new devilishly hot boyfriend by the name Spike Giles.” Spike blushed a little bit at her comment and Buffy smiled at him in return. “And I knew Mr. Giles and his bookstore because I catch all my books and school stuff here so I made my own conclusion and thought it was worth a shot when you weren’t at home, and Dawn either.”
“Why isn’t Dawn at home?” Buffy asked the nervous feeling returned with a vengeance.
“I don’t know” Janice answered” she was supposed to fetch me for a ride to school and when she didn’t show up I started to wonder. She hasn’t been in school all day either so I went over to your garage after school was finished and found it locked. That was when I started to seriously doubt that everything was okay and hoped to find you here.”
“Baby” Spike spoke up “you’re breaking my arm right now.” Buffy relaxed her death grip on Spike’s arm.
“I… I’m sorry” Buffy answered. When she turned around Spike could see that all colour had left her face and that she was visibly shaking.
“Come here” Spike coaxed her into his arms “I’m sure everything is going to be fine, pet, we’ll find her.”
“Yeah” she answered flatly, her voice holding anything but confidence.
“Thank you” Spike addressed Janice while he fetched his duster from the wardrobe “do you need a ride?”
“No thank you I have to get some books anyway so I will stay a while. When you find Dawn can you tell her that she should please call me so I can rip her head of for making me worry?” Janice smiled a small smile.
“Sure, luv, we’ll tell her after we killed her” Spike smiled in answer and pulled Buffy out of the shop and into his car after she had thanked Janice.
============================================================
Ten minutes later, Buffy’s house
“They are not here, they are both not here” Buffy stated after she searched the whole house and the surrounding areas for Dawn and Willow.
“I see, pet, I see” Spike stood at the front door, pulled out a cigarette, lit it and blew a cloud of smoke into the air. He seemed to smoke often when something upset him or he needed to think about something Buffy learned over the last days. “What do we do next?”
“I want to go to the garage” Buffy answered his question “perhaps they are there and Janice just showed up there when everybody was out to grab a bite or something” she knew it was a lame excuse to why the garage was closed but she wanted to grab every straw of hope she could get her hands on.
“I also need my car” she continued “if they aren’t at the garage we need to check Willow’s parents and Xander’s flat.”
“Okay pet, let’s go” Spike answered, crushed the cigarette under his heavy combat boot and took Buffy’s hand to give it a reassuring squeeze after she had closed up her house and they went for his Skyline.
============================================================
They arrived at BSR a few minutes later and found it still locked. They left Spike’s car and Buffy opened the garage door. She gasped in pure horror when the scene in front of them revealed itself to their eyes.
They found Xander in a pool of blood in the middle of the garage where Buffy’s car had been the night before. Buffy and Spike ran over to him to see if he was still alive. They found him still breathing but he was badly injured. He had deep cuts all over his face and Spike was sure that some of his bones were broken. But the most vicious injuries seemed to be the deep cut on his stomach and the knife still impaled in his hand.
“Xander, Xander” Buffy screamed “Wake up, do you hear me, I said wake up” Buffy shook him and tried to get a sign of living from her friend.
Spike inspected the wounds and found a small envelope attached to the knife sticking out of Xander’s hand. He pulled it out and read Buffy’s name written on it in a fine handwriting.
“Buffy?” he called her. “BUFFY?” he called louder when she didn’t seem to hear him the first time ‘cause she still tried to wake up Xander. She turned her head and Spike found tears streaming down her cheeks. He gave her the envelope and started to pull up Xander and place him in the back of his ride.
“What … what are you doing and what is this?” Buffy asked the envelope clutched into a shaking hand.
“We have to take him to a hospital. He is still alive and he has no life threatening wounds” Spike answered his voice empty of emotions.
“But we can’t move him, what … what if he has internal bleeding or a broken bone in his back and he will be paralyzed…” Buffy ranted in panic and started to hyperventilate.
“Shh… baby” Spike pulled her into his arms after he put Xander’s bruised body into the car “it’s alright, he will be fine, everything will be fine” he tried to calm her although his own insides and his mind were screaming. If he would freak out now, both of them and Willow and Dawn were lost.
“That’s good, luv, take deep slow breaths, you’ll see everything is gonna be okay. Now tell me, Buffy” he took her face into his hands and looked into her eyes “do you have the number of Willows parents somewhere here in the garage” she nodded “okay then go get it and meet me outside. I will close up while you fetch it.”
Buffy went to her office to get her address book and Spike placed his car in front of the garage and closed the door. One minute later Buffy emerged through the side door and entered Spike’s car.
============================================================
They made it to the hospital in five minutes flat, no red lights or speed limits stopping them. When the entered the emergency room Buffy grabbed the first white coated person she could find and pulled him to where Spike was holding a still bleeding Xander.
The nurse called for a doctor and a trauma team and everything after that happened in a blur. Xander was taken from Spike’s arms and put onto a carry. Buffy and Spike walked all the while next to their friend until they reached an examination room and they were stopped by a nurse and told that they should please go to the reception and fill out some forms.
After they dealt with the paperwork Spike was shown a bathroom where he could clean himself up and afterwards both of them found themselves placed in the waiting area. They were told that they would be called as soon as anything came up.
There wasn’t anything either one of them could have done in the meantime than wait. The minutes passed like hours and Spike started pacing. Buffy was sure before they got any news from Xander or his state Spike would have walked himself into the basement.
Suddenly Spike turned around and looked at Buffy’s hand. He saw that she still clutched the lopelope they found attached to Xander’s bruised body. He sat next to her pulled the bloodstained piece of paper from her hand and opened the letter.

I’m sure you found your male buddy
when you read this and let me tell you
it wasn’t my fault. He just didn’t want

tell him Riley said Hi and that he
should choose his bleached friends

As for why I am writing you, I thought
it has been a long time since we had
been on a date. I’d say we meet at our
little place in the desert tomorrow at
midnight. See you then lov

that.

Buffy hadn’t read the letter together with Spike. She still was in her own thoughts, processing everything they had just witnessed. She jumped when she heard Spike jump from his seat and punch the wall next to him with full force. Blood streamed from a wound that opened through the impact to the cold stone and Buffy knew that everything was far from okay. She took Spike’s uninjured hand into hers to prevent him from hurting himself anymore. She pulled him back to his seat and wiped the blood from his wound with the hem of her already blood red shirt. When she saw that it was only a small cut she gave it a small kiss and pulled the letter from his hand.
Spike visually relaxed a little bit when Buffy cleaned his wound and was able to contain his boiling anger again. He laid his arm around Buffy’s shoulder while she read the offending piece of paper. With every line she read Buffy seemed to become smaller in his arms. When she finished she turned her head and Spike saw fresh tears running down her cheeks. He pulled her into his lap and placed her head on his chest when audible sobs escaped her and she began to cry in earnest. He whispered soothing words into her ear and kissed the top of her head until she calmed down and seemed to relax in his arms.
“What are we going to do?” Buffy whispered to Spike when she seemed to overcome her emotional breakdown.
“I have some certain ideas that involve something along pointy metal pieces shoved into the body of that bloody fucking bastard, perhaps something like a railroad spike” Spike’s voice got a dangerous edge.
“Is that how you got your nickname?” Buffy’s voice was still shaking. Her mind had shut down completely otherwise she never would have asked such a question.
Spike knew that she wasn’t serious in her state and just gave her a kiss to her forehead as an answer.
“Excuse me?” a nurse called the two of them “Are you waiting for Mr. Harris?”
Spike nodded and Buffy turned her head to look at the female clothed in a white coat.
“Good, I just wanted to tell you that we had to put Mr. Harris into surgery because of the injury to his hand.” When Buffy visibly flinched Spike tightened his grip onto her and gave her a small peck to tell her that everything would be alright. “He is now in his room and out of any danger although we had to put him on medication against the pain and he won’t be awake until tomorrow. I think that it would be best for both of you to go home and get some rest” the nurse told them with a smile. “He is in good hands.”
“Thank you” Spike told the nurse that turned to leave. He then turned his head back to Buffy and told her that it was time to go home and talk about the events of the evening and strategy to free Willow and Dawn. Buffy agreed and they left for Buffy’s house.
