Chapter 12
Someone was here that shouldn’t be; it wasn’t a native and it was too close to my home than I was comfortable with. I hid up in the treetop branches, silently waiting, as the person got closer and closer, the brush parted and a fatigue-clad figure emerged, heading in a direction it shouldn’t. I jumped down from the tree and landed squarely on the person and surprisingly was thrown off. I was quickly back on my feet and was about to lunge and go in for the kill when a single word stopped me in my tracks.
“Spike?” a familiar voiced asked as the figure lifted off the poncho hood.
“Summers?” I asked in disbelief. Sure enough, it was the Slayer. “Bloody hell! What are you doing here? You should know better than anyone that you should never come this far into the jungle… what if I hadn’t recognized you? I’d have killed you before I ever realized it.”
She shrugged. “Like I was ever one to listen to rules.” I laughed because she was right.
“What are you doing here Summers?” I asked.
“Well, word came a few weeks ago that shortly after you and Ana made with the Houdini exit the Council in jolly ol’ England got a case of mysterious deaths and disappearances among some of its members. Seemed to me like a familiar M.O.” and she looked at me.
“What do you want to hear Slayer? That we didn’t do it? Well, we did, and we also destroyed any and all documentation of our existence.” She merely nodded.
“Figured as much.”
“Is that what you came all the way to the Amazon to hear? Bollix. I don’t buy it.”
“Okay, so you got me, I was curious as to how you two were faring. In spite of what you might think I do care for you guys, I just wanted to see how things were going for you two. I’m guessing things are going very well since you seem to be on top of the ‘protecting the territory’ bit. I guess, well, um, just tell Ana I said hello.” And she turned to begin her way back.
“Summers.” I called out, causing her to pause and turn back around. “C’mon, why don’t you come and say hello yourself.” And I began making my way into the thick vegetation with her right behind me, after half an hours walk, we came upon our den.
“Spike?” Ana called out from inside.
“Yeah pet, it’s me. Brought something for you.”
“Is it food?”
I laughed. “No pet it’s not.” I said as I entered inside, with Buffy close behind.
She gasped and then let out a soft laugh. “Slayer. Good to see you. What brings you here?” she asked.
Buffy smiled. “Come to see how my two favorite ex-fighting partners were holding up in their new life. I can see this new life suits the both of you. Congratulations.” And she smiled at us once more. “Well, I’ll make my way back now I guess, don’t be strangers you guys, come and visit us soon; not all of us can live as long as you guys.” She said as she exited the den. With a final look back, a smile and a wave goodbye, she disappeared from sight and the jungle soon swallowed up her footsteps.
I looked down at my Mate, glowing with pride and love. I kissed her and then lay down in front of her as we both changed into our feline form, the two of us happily curled together with our four newborn cubs between us.
