Chapter 11

Chapter 11

As everyone got started on their assignments Buffy went up to check on Faith. As she turned the corner in the hall she could hear Faith’s voice. It sounded like she had been crying, Buffy stood by the door and listened to the conversation.

“Yes.” A sniffle escaped Faith. “You know, Little D, you’re the first person who has let me be a part of their lives.” She looked askance at Dawn. “I’m not saying I’m inexperienced, I mean, Xander, hello,” she smiled. “But I mean, that was just physical lust, nothing like this. Damn, Dawnie, you make it so hard for me, just sitting there, looking at me with those big beautiful grey eyes. But I know you’re just making me work for your smile. Ok, fine. Yes, Dawnie, I love you. Yes, Dawnie, I want to be a part of something more.” A shuddering sigh escaped Faith with this proclamation. “I’m hurt, but when you’re near, I don’t even notice, really. No pain. No pain…” Faith leaned forward to kiss her young lover. Dawn wrapped her arms around Faith’s neck, drawing her close being very careful not to pull too hard. Faith moved closer and stopped when the pain set in from her shoulder and arm.

Outside the door, Buffy stood stunned. She knew that Dawn and Faith were becoming close, but she hadn’t realized that things had gone that far, that quickly. She shifted back and forth on her feet, thinking hard. Dawn was probably the best thing that could happen to the other slayer, but still, a convicted murderer was with her sister! But she had changed so much from the brash, angry young woman who had killed that man. But does anyone really come back from crossing that line? What about Angel and Spike? They were both killers par excellence, but look at them now. True, they aren’t soulless demons anymore, but…

Buffy shook her head. Thinking hurts sometime. Deciding that Dawn was smart enough to know what was good for her and to ask if she needed advice, Buffy crept back down the hall to the head of the stairs. Turning back, she stomped back up the hallway, making as much noise as she could walking to Dawn’s room. She coughed a few times before rapping on the doorframe.

“Dawnie, Faith, may I come in?” Buffy called through the door. A pair of startled gasps greeted her voice. A whispered “Damn” followed, too soft to make out who had spoken. A moment of rustling followed before Dawn said, “Sure, Miss Stealthy, come on in.” Buffy shook her head in amazement before turning the knob.

“I’ve got Anya and Xander rounding up the rest of the Scoobies. Amie and Willow are reading like crazy down in the dining room. I was wondering if I could tempt you two into coming on a food run with me. Nacho-y goodness. What do you say?”

Dawn and Faith were sitting on opposite ends of the bed from one another. The teenager’s hair was tousled and Faith’s clothing was rumpled, like it had been hurriedly yanked back into place. “Um…sure B, if you really want us to come with. I’m feeling better. Thanks for asking,” the dark haired slayer said with a touch of sarcasm. The two girls hopped up from the bed.

A few minutes later, in the car, the two slayers and Dawn were jamming out to the new Christina Aguilera Beautiful remix and everything seemed so simple to them. Yeah, Lindsey was out there, but they would beat him. They always won. Later, Buffy would look back on that car ride as the last time they were happy for a long, long time.

“Ah, Foodies. Such a wonderful place. Nachos, chips, soda, and frozen pizza. The study essentials. The study four food groups!” Dawn babbled happily as she leapt from the car, dancing a bit as her sister and girlfriend climbed out. Faith closed the door, and turned towards Dawn, with a ready quip. She swallowed her comeback as she looked past Dawn.

“Faith? What’s wrong, love?” Dawn asked, a trickle of fear touching her at Faith’s shocked, scared expression . She turned around, following Faith’s line of sight. A quiet shriek escaped her. Buffy called from the other side of the car, “What?” She raced around, stumbling to a halt when she saw what the other two were looking at.

Walking towards the car from further down the parking lot was Joyce Summers.

“Oh, no, oh god no, oh that bastard, that prick, I’ll kill him!” whispered Buffy. Dawn shuddered, falling backwards against the car. Faith moved protectively in front of the two Summers girls.

“Joyce. It’s been a long time,” called the dark slayer. “Sorry I missed your funeral.”

“You can’t fool me, Faith,” hissed the zombie that was Buffy and Dawn’s mother. “You didn’t come because you were GLAD I was dead. Now Buffy was alone. Just…like…YOU!” With an inhuman snarl, Joyce leapt towards the three terrified young women.

“Mommy!” screamed Buffy, rushing past Faith, catching the corpse in her arms. “No, Mom, please no!”

“Let go, I don’t want you. I don’t love you. I want DAWN!” yelled Joyce as she shoved Buffy to the side and ran towards the frightened teen. Faith grabbed her arm, wrenching the corpse to a halt. “You aren’t going to touch Dawn, Joyce.” With a devastated look on her face Faith whispered, “I’m sorry,” as she threw her first punch into the stomach of her lover’s mother.
