Chapter 11

Short update, but it's leading somewhere. Thanks again for the reviews, I appreciate it!

Later the next day, Faith was discharged from the hospital after much complaining on her part on how she didn’t want to be there in the first place. Being a slayer, she was healing faster than the doctors had thought, but she was still pretty weak and they had thought it best to keep her there just for observation. The young slayer wasn’t exactly the model patient there, but Buffy kept her in line as much as she could. She had the feeling being stabbed would probably make anyone at least a little cranky.

The blonde had kept her company, though. So did the rest of the gang, having given up their Saturday to hang out in a small hospital room. Xander was a little nervous around the brunette since he was the one who tried to set Buffy up with someone which had set off the series of events that led to the brunette being there to begin with. Faith had quickly eased his mind, however, telling him it wasn’t his fault. Both her and Buffy knew they should have just been honest with everyone from the start.

Finally, early Sunday afternoon, Buffy pushed Faith out of the hospital in a wheelchair to her mother’s car.

“I really don’t see the purpose of the wheelchair,” Faith protested as Buffy pushed her out the front doors. She shifted in the chair irritably. “I can walk fine. It’s not like the demon broke my legs.”

“Faith, your doctor said you shouldn’t be on your feet on that much for the next couple days,” Buffy said. “Besides, if you keep saying you’re okay, Mom’ll make you go to school.”

“I guess,” Faith grumbled as they reached Joyce’s SUV.

“All right, Faith,” the elder Summers smiled, “let’s get you into the car and home. You are staying in bed and resting until I say otherwise.”

Faith didn’t respond, just got up carefully and climbed into the front seat. Buffy went back to return the wheelchair and Joyce went around the vehicle and got into the driver’s seat.

“As much as I don’t want to say this,” Faith sighed, looking over at the older woman, “what about my school work?”

“I wouldn’t worry too much about that,” Joyce smiled, “I’m sure Giles or Willow can pick up any homework you’ll have for the next couple days. Buffy’s managed to convince me that she should stay home and look after you.”

“Yeah?” Faith grinned.

Joyce nodded. “I have too much work at the gallery to stay home with you and I figure if no one’s there, you won’t follow the doctor’s orders. Buffy is going to make sure you stay in bed and get well,” she explained then turned to the teenager. “Rupert told me about your school work, Faith.”

Faith groaned, knowing exactly what her girlfriend’s mother was talking about. “How does he know?”

“He works there, Faith, and he’s your guardian. It’s not that hard,” she answered. “Why haven’t you said how well you’re doing? Rupert said you’re on track to get four A’s and two B’s.”

“I don’t think it’s true,” Faith said honestly, “I’m not smart.”

“Well, that’s where you’re wrong,” Joyce said. “Be proud of it.”

“Be proud of what?” Buffy asked as she hopped into the back seat.

“Nothing, B,” Faith answered, willing the older woman to drop the subject. She nodded knowingly and Faith sighed in relief. “Let’s get out of here. I hate hospitals.”

“Hear, hear,” Buffy said happily as Joyce pulled away from the entrance.

Buffy stayed close to Faith as they walked into the house, Joyce walking right behind them. Faith had thought about saying she didn’t need help but decided against it when she realized Buffy would be doting on her. She wasn’t about to protest to that.

The blonde was doing her best to make sure Faith knew how much she cared about her. She wasn’t sure if Faith was angry with her still and felt the need to show her. She didn’t want anything bad to happen to or with her girlfriend and have her leave. It was something she couldn’t even contemplate.

“Okay, Faith, go up to your room and lie down,” Joyce said almost sternly, “I’ll bring up some food later. I also put a TV in your room so you won’t get bored.”

“Thanks, Mrs. S,” Faith grinned at her. “I am getting a little tired. A nap sounds really good right now.”

“Do you need help up to your room?” Buffy asked, putting her hand gently on Faith’s shoulder.

“I got it, B,” Faith said and walked carefully up the stairs. She turned back and gave Buffy a small smile, just enough to show off her dimples, hoping to let her know that they were okay. She hoped the blonde got the message.

“Buffy, come into the kitchen,” Joyce waved her over as Buffy watched Faith go up the stairs.

Buffy followed her mother into the kitchen and the two of them sat down at the table across from each other. The pair just sat at the table for a moment before Buffy spoke up.

“Is something on your mind, Mom?”

Joyce sighed. “How serious are you and Faith? I know all your friends know now.”

“Oh,” Buffy said and looked down. “We haven’t really done anything since you found out if that’s what you’re asking.”

“That’s good to know, but it’s not what I’m asking. I don’t want you to hurt each other. Look what happened with one misunderstanding. What’s gonna happen when you have an actual fight?”

“We’ve talked about that,” Buffy said seriously, “I admitted I should have just said something to Xander about the whole situation and Faith admitted she reacted badly. Giles already gave us the ‘don’t let your relationship get in the way of slaying’ lecture. We know it’s not gonna be easy, but we love each other, Mom.”

Joyce nodded. “I’m not going to tell you to stop seeing each other. I know you would anyway. I just want you to be careful.”

“I know,” Buffy said and paused, thinking of something she hadn’t really thought of before. “Do you not like the fact we’re dating?”

“It’s not that, Buffy,” Joyce said. “I think of Faith as a daughter. I just need the two of you to be sure, to know what you’re getting into. I don’t want you two to break up and then have to live in the same house. That won’t be easy.”

“It won’t happen, Mom,” Buffy answered strongly. “Now, can I go upstairs and check on Faith?”

Her mother only nodded and watched Buffy race up the stairs.

Monday morning Faith woke up feeling a slight pain in her side, but still very content. She felt warm on her left side and turned her head to see Buffy snuggled against her. The brunette hadn’t fallen asleep with Buffy there since Joyce was still a little weary of them sleeping together, but she was here now. She looked over at the clock and saw it was 8:30. Faith figured the older girl must have seen her mother off to work and then came into her room.

Faith shifted onto her side slightly, smiling as she didn’t feel much pain with the movement. She leaned over her girlfriend and put a hand gently through her hair. She leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, causing Buffy to stir.

“Morning, B,” Faith whispered gravelly into her ear.

“Mmm,” Buffy said, shifting a bit before opening her eyes slightly, “was I asleep?”

“Looks like it,” Faith smiled, giving her a quick kiss. She shifted a little closer to the blonde, gently keeping her hand in her hair.

“I was supposed to just come up here and make sure you were okay then get some breakfast together,” Buffy frowned. “Mom gave me a whole list of things to do. We’re also supposed to keep an eye on your wound and make sure your stitches are okay.”

“You’re gonna make me breakfast?” Faith asked, grinning. “I don’t know if I want to go back to the hospital. I heard getting food poisoning really sucks.”

“Stop that,” Buffy lightly swatted her arm, giggling lightly. “I think I can figure out how to make something breakfasty that’s edible. Mom said I can’t make you cook.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty comfortable right here,” Faith responded, stretching out a little on the bed but careful not to stretch the muscles around her stitches. “I’ve never been as tired as I have been in the last couple days.”

“That’s because you nearly died, baby,” Buffy said and Faith looked at her with a raised eyebrow. “You lost a lot of blood, Faith. I had to carry you for two blocks before I was able to call for help.”

“No one said it was that bad,” Faith said, looking at her quizzically, not really knowing what to say.

“If I hadn’t been there, you would have died,” Buffy said. “The ER doctor said he didn’t know if he could help you.” She sighed. “I think if you were normal, you would have died.”

“I’m sorry for putting you through that,” Faith said sincerely. “It won’t happen again. From now on, we patrol together if we can help it.”

“Deal,” Buffy grinned and brushed her lips against Faith’s. The brunette pulled Buffy closer while deepening their kiss which became more passionate. The pair broke for air and Faith put her hand on Buffy’s cheek, caressing it lightly.

“Now, I believe you were going to make me breakfast,” she smirked. “I am starting to get hungry... and not just for you.”

Buffy laughed. “Okay, I’ll go downstairs and see what I can come up with. Then you can eat and relax. We can just stay up here all day and watch trashy daytime TV or some movies or something.”

“Sounds good to me,” Faith nodded to her girlfriend. “Now, about breakfast...”

“I’m going, I’m going,” Buffy laughed lightly as she jumped off the bed and walked out of the room.
