Shades of gray

Sasha gently grasped Skyes hand and led her through the catacomb of tunnels and passages leading to the maze of memory, if there were any realm of her domain that resembled the human’s opinion of hell it was this realm.

The blistering heat that seemed to almost scold you then an instant later, it was frigidly cold. Moisture and cobwebs clung to almost every dark damp surface. Ironically enough there was something about this area that sent a chill straight down Sasha’s spine.

Turning to her charge she smiled reassuringly and pushed through the webs and darkness, stopping at the enormous double doors she read the sign posted on them, ‘Maze of Memory’

Sighing she turned to Skye “This is it…no matter what you see in here…it can’t hurt you. All it is are memories. Just don’t let go of my hand…ok?”

Skye swallowed and nodded, watching with wide eyes as the blue woman quietly opened the doors and led her through. Blinking in confusion she looked around, this place was strange, she couldn’t see anything in particular…it was more of a feeling…mixture of dread and pain…it hung like a thick coat in the air surrounding her…looking up to the stranger in confusion.

“They’re the strongest memory of everyone in my underworld…these are the negative ones. Come on…we still have to get through the maze.”

Skye nodded and held onto Sasha’s hand, as the demon led her through the open room. Stopping they looked at the three doorways offered before them, all identical except for a roman numeral above the doorway.

“Which one do you want to take?” Sasha said softly…Skye shrugged. “You’re the one that has to show us where to go…you’re the one in search here…”

“I don’t know…” Skye looked in confusion at the doors…she so desperately wanted to go back to heaven. Sit with Giles and Anya…she wanted her memories but she didn’t feel safe here. Looking over to her left when she thought she saw something she started at the sight of a tall slender blonde woman. There was something so familiar about her…

“Do you recognize her?” Sasha asked softly. “You know her Skye…she’s one of your memoires. She’s your guide…I cant go any farther. Follow her…but DON’T touch her.” Sasha warned firmly.

Stepping away from Skye she watched the dark haired girl nervously tug on her hair and step forwards, pausing only long enough for her to follow ‘Ryan’ to the heart of the maze. Sitting down on the ground against the wall she watched the wolfs retreating form until she was enveloped in darkness.

Sasha smiled….this may actually be easy…all Skye had to do was follow her memory guide and she would find the chalice of memory. Honestly Sasha didn’t understand why she couldn’t just zap Skyes memories back to her.

Kennedy groaned and rolled over in her bed, frowning without opening her eyes when she felt an arm wrap around her waist. Letting out a breath she opened her eyes and saw the sun peaking over the trees.

Rolling over she smiled down at the sleeping slayer lying beside her, listening intently she was relieved not to hear any sounds of Sheridan downstairs. Groaning she climbed out of bed and stretched.

Bending down she pulled on her shorts and an old t-shirt. Pulling her hair back into a pony tail she turned one more time to make sure than Miranda was still asleep, she was. Sheridan didn’t know about Miranda as anything more than she was mommy’s friend and Kennedy felt it was better that way.

No use in her daughter getting ideas, that could either go one of two ways, either the little demon child liked Miranda or she didn’t in which case Sheridan would set curses left and right on the slayer.

Throwing a blanket over the younger woman Kennedy walked out of the room and headed down stairs to start on breakfast. Yawning she turned when she heard Sheridan’s bedroom door open and her baby walked out tiredly rubbing her eyes.

Kennedy frowned at the hat covering Sheridan’s head; apparently Sheridan was getting more and more self conscious about her horns. She would have to talk to Sheridan about that more later.

“What happened mom?” Sheridan asked pointing to Kennedy’s neck.

Kennedy frowned in confusion and then remembered. “Nothing baby, just got bit last night.” That answer appeased her ever curious child and the two walked downstairs. Sheridan sat at the table while Kennedy fished out some microwave waffles and fruit.

“Mom…you should have a baby”

Kennedy choked on the orange juice she HAD been drinking, ignoring the slight burn in her nostrils she turned wide eyed at her child. “What?”

“A baby…Faith and Raya have lots…so do Andy and Asher…even Dawn has em.”

“I have you baby doll…why do you suddenly want a sister or brother?”

“Cause everyone else has one except me and I don’t know…it would be fun.” Sheridan said confidently. Kennedy watched her daughter as she nervously twisted her hands together.

“I can’t have another baby…not if im not married.”

“Why don’t you marry Miranda?” Sheridan asked curiously...”You guys wrestle…why you don’t have a baby?”

‘Well there goes that idea’ Kennedy thought as her hopes of having a quiet affair were effectively dashed by her five year old.

“Because we don’t love each other.”

“Then why do you wrestle?” Sheridan asked, taking a bite of the melon Kennedy held out to her.

“Because…sometimes grownups have friends and its ok to do that with those friends.” Kennedy sighted…she was definitely not cut out to be a mom sometimes.

“So…what about my other mom?”

“What about her?” Kennedy said, sharper than she had meant too…Sasha wasn’t a good subject for her…they had tried for years to get her to come back out here and look where that had gotten them. Absolutely no where…

“Well…was she a friend?” Sheridan asked, tears in her eyes. Kennedy tried not to roll her eyes as she realized just how big of a mess she had set up for herself.

“She wasn’t just a friend Sheri; she gave me the most beautiful little girl in the world.” Kennedy smiled down at her daughter, softly rubbing her daughters back she looked up when she heard someone clear there throat.

Turning she saw Miranda standing in the doorway, wearing the clothes from the night before. “I didn’t mean to sleep so late, ill take your tunnel access back to the school.”

Kennedy nearly agreed, but looking down into her daughters big violet eyes…fuck Buffy. “No…you can stay for breakfast if you want.”

Miranda smiled nervously, and looked down at the girl standing beside her girlfriend. She had wanted to get to know the child better for awhile but Kennedy had made it seem as if they were purely sexual.

“Yeah…I would like that.” Miranda said, smiling at the delighted expression on Sheridan’s face.

“Set another place setting Sheri” Kennedy said, pulling out more fruit and a glass for Miranda.

“Okay mom”
