Just Friends
This one starts right after Lost and Found in the Amnesty!Verse, as Doyle wonders what’s up with Angel and Xander.
Just Friends
“What was all that about?”
Doyle sat in the passenger side of the convertible and watched Angel as he ran a red light to get to Westwood. He’d had a vision of a vampire attack in the upscale neighborhood shortly after sunset and his head hadn’t even had time to clear before Angel was dragging him out of the office.
But that didn’t mean he didn’t notice things. It would have taken more than the skull shattering pain that came along with the visions <>not<> to notice.
“Huh?” Angel was distracted by trying to drive. Usually this was a good time to talk to him about things because his concentration was split, trying to do too many things at once, and Doyle had half a chance of getting a straight answer out of the man.
“What was up back there, with you and the kid?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Hold on.” Angel made a sharp turn and Doyle clutched at the dashboard, trying to keep from being thrown from the car. The pain slammed through his head again at the sudden change and he groaned. He just knew that damn bastard did it on purpose to keep from talking. He kept quiet for the moment; he’d grill Angel after they saved the day.

“So what’s the thing?”
“What are you talking about?”
Doyle sighed. Sometimes Angel was a pain in the ass to deal with. No wonder he was driven to drink. “There’s a thing, with you and that kid…Xander? Didn’t Cordy date him for a while?” He had to admit he was just a bit jealous of the boy. Cordy had given him a chance. He also seemed to have Angel wrapped around his little finger.
He’d come into the office and Angel wasn’t even there. He’d gone downstairs, only to find Angel cooking and some kid taking a shower in the other room. The day had gotten weirder from there. He’d never seen Angel really smile before; it was always that half-assed, sad sort of thing that looked like someone had killed his favorite puppy.
But with the kid, Xander, he actually laughed a few times, and grinned. Not a scary, I’m about to rip your throat out kind of grin either, which Doyle was always on the look out for in case his boss lost his soul. It was an honest to goodness smile of pure happiness.
Xander was just as bad: his eyes lit up when Angel was there. He’d talked to the lad a few minutes while Angel was showering and it was obvious he had a crush. And Doyle was pretty sure that the feelings were returned.
“If you can call hiding out half the time because Cordelia was ashamed of him dating. Xander and I are friends. That’s it.”
Doyle bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing. Angel was acting overprotective and slightly jealous.
If Angel and Xander were just friends, he’d eat his coat.
