Confessions

"William? Can I speak to you a moment?" Father Wesley called from outside of William's bedroom door after knocking soundly.

"Uhhh...hold on..." William slurred.

It had been three days since Buffy had ran off from him. He had feigned sickness and holed up in his room with a few liquor bottles he had procured from Father Wesley's cabinet. He was drunk and dirty and miserable.

William pulled the door open a crack, "What?"

"Still not feeling well?" Wesley questioned suspiciously.

"No...must have the flu" William answered.

"Interesting. Since when did they start prescribing whiskey for the flu?" Wesley inquired upon smelling the stench of alcohol fumes wafting out of the room.

William's shoulders slumped and he walked away from the door, leaving it open. No use hiding now. He was already caught. Father Wesley pushed the door open the rest of the way and took in the shambles of William's room. Clothes flung all over, bottles laying around. Broken pieces of furniture, but most grotesque, was all of Father William's collars were in a pile, shredded and soiled.

"You want to tell me what has happened?" Wesley finally spoke.

"You wouldn't believe me if I did." William snorted.

"Try me." Wesley pressed.

"Nothing wrong, mate." William slumped down in the chair next to his bed.

"Of course, and that's why it looks like a tornado hit your room. Coincidently enough, this all coincides with a certain nun being missing too but you wouldn't know anything about that either, would you?" Wesley asked.

That perked up William's attention.

"What? Who?" William said.

"Sister Buffy. She has been missing for two days. She apparently took a small travel bag and a few belongings and slipped out during the night. That's what I came here to ask you about." Father Wesley informed him.

"Missing? No...she..I...oh God..." William ran his hands over his face.

"William...it's time for confession. I think I finally figured it out. Buffy wasn't confessing about ME that day. She was confessing about YOU. I want you to tell me what happened." Wesley told him.

William sighed in defeat and began telling Wesley the story of him and Buffy, leaving out the more graphic details, of course and that of Sisters Willow and Tara's involvement.

"Well, I suggest you get yourself sober and cleaned up." Father Wesley finally said after William had finished his story.

"Why? She's gone now. She left me..." William choked up.

"Well you certainly can't go find her in this state. I'll start a pot of coffee. You go shower and get dressed. In street clothes. William, I think we both know that God's calling for you is not to be a priest. Go get your girl." Wesley offered.

"But..I...I don't know where to look..." William began.

"She came from a small town, Sunnydale. I would wager that she went back home. You'll find her. I know you will. I have it on high authority." Wesley winked.

"Thank you Father. I know I've sinned. I'm so sorry." William apologized.

"Save it for the confessional." Wesley smiled softly and left the room.

Buffy stepped off the bus, duffel bag in hand. She wandered around the small town streets. How on earth could she go home? She was an embarrassment. A failure. Would her mother understand? Would she let her come home? I'm so scared and alone, she thought.

Then her thoughts drifted to William. Sweet William and his promises of love and marriage and she began sobbing. What did it matter now that she had left the order? She was free to marry and live the life of a normal girl but even so, she didn't want to be the cause of William leaving his calling. Just because of her selfishness and weakness, she shouldn't ruin his career and life as a priest. So she had done the only thing she could. She ran away. From the nuns. From William.

Finally her footsteps brought her to Revello Drive. Taking a deep breath, she walked up the sidewalk and knocked on the door. After a few moments, the door was opened to reveal an attractive middle aged woman.

"Buffy?" her eyes opened wide in shock.

"Hi Mommy. Can I come home?" Buffy teared up.

"Oh honey...of course." Joyce Summers said, taking her daughter into her arms and embracing her.

"You can always come home, Buffy." she hugged her little girl tightly.

William, now clean and sober, packed a bag with some clothes, some toiletries and his bible. Father Wesley loaned him some money to take s tos to Sunnydale and for expenses. William promised to pay him back as soon as he could. He climbed on the bus with hope in his heart.

He was going to see about a girl.
