Chapter Ten
Warren finished editing the cave paintings. He laughed, looking at his handywork. The Slayer wouldn’t know what hit her. All she had to do was touch the wall. And Warren had no doubt that she would. He gathered up his things and went back to the hotel to wait for Andrew and Jonathan.
It took Buffy and Spike alittle longer to get to Mexico City because they had to travel by night. They checked into a small motel on the seedy side of town and gathered up some supplies. They made their way to the underground temple of Amantillado. When they got to the outer chamber of the temple, Spike stopped, sniffing the air. “Someone’s been here recently.”
“Could be other tomb robbers. The place is supposed to have a room full of Incan gold treasures. After we find the cross, we can look for it.” She smiled at him and he put down the knapsack he was carrying and kissed her gently touching his tongue to hers.
Spike reached for the door to the inner chambers and Buffy pushed him out of the way nearly a second before the booby trap of six wooden stakes almost hit him. “Looks like someone was expecting vamps to try to get in here,” he said. Buffy’s heart was in her throat. She could have lost him. Spike got up off the floor and Buffy went inside the door first.
The place was a strange mixture of cave paintings and hanging bone idols, almost voodoo like. There were broken clay pots on the floor. Buffy lit a few of the torches on the walls to see the paintings better. They appeared to tell the story of the Cross of Amantillado. “Spike, it’s just like the story in the book Giles had. Centuries ago, a vampire committed a noble act, he was rewarded with a special cross made of pure bloodstone, the cross allowed him to walk in the daylight. But something happened, the people of the village angered a hellgod, and the vampire tried to defend the village, but the hellgod won the fight and his new followers built this temple, hiding all the treasures of the village in the secret chambers here. That means the cross must be here, too.” Buffy moved further down the wall. “I think we have to press certain stones in the wall and then the hidden chambers open up.” She touched the wall and it dissolved into a rippling liquid. Buffy was sucked into the dimensional portal right before Spike’s eyes and the portal sealed shut behind her, leaving him to beat his fists against the stone wall screaming her name.
“Lose something there, Sparky.” Warren stepped out of the shadows followed by Andrew and Jonathan.
Spike growled and lunged at Warren, grabbing him by the throat. “Kill me and you’ll never see the Slayer again,” Warren managed to ground out.
Spike tried to get a hold of his daemon. Reluctantly, he let Warren go. “Where is she?”
“Oh, a little hell dimension called Railith. I’d imagine she’s going to be meeting up with the hellgod Amantillado any second now.”
Spike almost felt himself go numb. He knew the kind of daemons that dwelt in Railith. He was now terrified for Buffy. “How do I get her back?”
“Well, you can’t, really. I mean, you can go there, but no one ever comes back.”
“Open it! Open the portal now!”
“Can’t do that, Sparky. Not until you do alittle something for us. There’s a chamber in here filled with gold, we can’t get past the traps, but you can. Get us the gold and we’ll open the portal for you.”
Spike wanted to rip each one of the trio in half, but he didn’t know to gto get to Buffy and they might be his only way, so he nodded his head.
“That’s better.” Warren said.
