~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Xander was smiling at everyone he passed. He nodded at a few that he knew a little more about. He pushed his wheelchair at a brisk pace; his strong arms could handle it now. Unlike when he had first gotten into the car accident, his arms would burn every time he tried to push for more than 10 minutes. That had been almost a year ago.
Xander had his grocery bags tied tightly to his lap, so no one could try and steal it from him. He knew people saw him as weak, and stupid, but he knew better. He used to be like that himself.
The brunette slowed to a stop near the alleyway when he saw a white blonde head pop up from a large garbage bin. He swiveled and turned into the ally and rolled closer.
"Hey... I hope you’re not eating from there. You could easily get fresh food around here without going through the garbage."
Spike cursed under his breath and threw the food he had been inspecting in to the garbage, figuring it was a cop that came to yell at him.
"Listen, mate, I..." he trailed off when he turned around to find a man in a wheelchair looking at him.
'Ah, so it's just a good Samaritan then,' he thought to himself.
"If you're talking about the homeless shelter I rather eat the garbage, pet," Spike said as he leaned against the brick wall and folded his arms over his chest.
Xander laughed and shook his head. "I know how much people don't usually want a meal like that. How about... Here, you can have this," he pulled out a plate covered with mashed potatoes, chicken, corn, and gravy. "I was gonna have this for dinner, but you look like you might enjoy it more than me." He wheeled a little closer and handed the plate to the blonde. "I'm Xander."
"Spike," he said to the man before he even thought of it, too busy eyeing the plate in hunger, his stomach growling loudly. "I appreciate the offer, Xander, but I don’t take handouts from anyone," he said after he shook off his hunger and turned back to the garbage.
Xander smiled, "How about you come with me to my house and help me fix some food there? Then you would have earned it." He moved closer, "Come on... I will even let you sleep in the guest room for the night. Maybe we can even work something out where you can work for the room and food."
Spike looked Xander over from head to toe carefully, seeing if he was a potential threat or not.
'I could take him if I had to. I mean, he's in a wheelchair, what's he gonna do, run me over?' he thought to himself.
"Fine. You have yourself a deal, mate," he said as he stuck out his hand for Xander to shake.
Xander smiled, reaching out and using his strong hand to shake Spike's. "Alright. Well, we better get back to my place, it's a few blocks away." He grinned. He turned around and started to wheel out of the ally. "Hope you can keep up, blondie," he teased playfully, not in an insulting way. He just hoped Spike could tell the difference.
As rolled out of the alley he saw a few jerks move to put a stick in front of him, and he swerved out of the way glaring at them.
Spike ignored the blondie remark and followed alongside Xander. When the guys put the stick in front of the wheelchair he stood back to see what his new friend would do and caught up to him when he simply moved and kept going.
"You have to deal with bloody shite like that a lot?"
Xander gave a shrug, "Not all the time. Usually the people are pretty kind. It's the college students who think they are funny and know everything that are the jerks. I'm used to it though." He gave a small smile up at Spike. "Do you want to have a Krispie bar?" he held up a chocolate chip Rice Krispie bar to Spike. "I always eat these when I am feeling peckish," he laughed a little as he looked up at the blonde with a bright smile.
Ignoring the way his heart jumped when his new friend smiled at him like that, Spike shrugged at took the bar from Xander, opening it and shoving it in his mouth. It was nice to have something someone didn’t already take a bite out of.
When they finally made it to Xander's apartment they went into the elevator and up to the third floor. Spike waited by the door for his friend to locate his keys and open the door.
Xander unlocked the door and opened it wide, "Welcome to my humble abode." He rolled in and swiveled around quickly and pointed at Spike, "You sir, yes you! Come right in. Into the deep dark, Xander Haunted House!" He laughed as he wheeled into his kitchen. "Can you help me put stuff away? I never used to put things into upper cabinets ‘cause I couldn't reach them, but now we can, since you are gonna stay for a while."
Spike chuckled under his breath and shut the door behind him before following Xander into the kitchen and helping to put the groceries away. When they were done Spike decided he was in need of a shower if he was going to be staying in a nice apartment like the brunette's.
"So where's my room?"
Xander moved into the hallway and opened a normal size door, not one big enough for his wheelchair to go through. "This is gonna be your room. I think there is really everything there. Extra toothbrushes, hair brushes, and stuff like that are in the bathroom. Use whatever you want," he smiled and strolled into the living room to watch a little TV.
Spike muttered a 'thank you', quickly disrobed, and hopped in the shower. He moaned as the warm water hit his body, not having had a real warm shower is months. Before he realized it, he spent so much time in there the water had turned cold. Shutting the water off, he hopped out and grabbed a towel to dry off. After searching the dresser drawers he found some clothes that would be slightly big, but would fit. He threw on the oversized sweat pants and pulled the string tight so they wouldn’t fall, even thought it didn’t stop it from hanging low on his hips. Grabbing a t-shirt, he exited the room to find Xander watching TV.
Xander turned and when he saw Spike, without dirt on his face, he felt speechless. "Wow," he gasped. He flushed when he realized he said that out loud. "Sorry." He looked back at the TV and was mentally hitting himself, hard.
Spike smiled cockily, "Good looking, right?" He put on the t-shirt he had grabbed as he walked over to the couch and took a seat. "What you watching, pet?" he asked as he looked over to the TV.
Xander shook out of it and he smiled, "Oh nothing really. Will and Grace, a few news channels, and OOH! Mythbusters!" He excitedly started to watch his favorite show. "I hope you like this show. It's one of my favorites." His eyes were glowing with happiness.
"I've heard of Will & Grace, but I haven't heard of Mythbusters," Spike said as he eyed the show Xander seemed to like so much. Once it was over, the bleached blonde had to agree, it was a very good show. "So now what, pet?"
Xander gave a small shrug, "Whatever you want. You can go to bed even, it's about 10pm. I will be getting up at 9am and going to my donut shop. You can come too if you want. I might even be able to get you a job started there. I will just need a little info about you when we get there. Is that okay?" he said a little worriedly, not wanting to push all of this onto the once homeless young man.
Spike nodded his head after thinking about it. "Sure, pet, that sounds good. And don’t worry, it's not like I have a past filled with drugs, drink, and murder," he assured his new friend when he saw the uneasy look on his face. "Well I guess I'll see you in the morning," he said as he got up and walked back towards his room. He paused at the door and looked back to the man in the wheelchair, "Thanks for this, Xander," before going into his room and shutting the door.
Xander looked at his couch, but shrugged. It was too late to get out of his chair to sit down on his lovely couch, just to get up again. He wheeled to his own bedroom, put his pj's on the bed, and then bounced out of the chair and onto his light green comforter. He gave a small giggle, he loved doing that, but he could only do it so much before his body got too tired. He slipped off his clothes and pulled on some sleeping boxers and a tank top. Once under the blanket it took a few minutes and he was out like a light.

AN: Please keep in mind the neither NightmareAhead or WarpedMinded has ever been confined to a wheelchair before, nor do we know anyone who has, so we might not be very accurate when it comes to that kind of stuff. If you notice anything let us know and we will fix it if it doesn’t mess up the fic too much.
