Background that might make its own fic someday, most likely a prologue to this one:
Angelus is the Master of the Hellmouth. He lives in a mansion with his minions, servants and two Childer.
Buffy is the current Slayer. Giles is her Watcher. Xander & Willow are her friends. They are 17 years old.
Angelus used to be Angel, soul-tormented cryptic guy. Spike and Drusilla are his Childer. When the gypsies cursed Angelus with his soul, they simply put it in control over the demon. When he had his ‘happy moment’ nearly 80 years later, the demon went a bit berserk before it calmed down. The ruthlessness of the demon is now being tempered by the soul.
Angelus wants nothing to do with the Slayer, as it should be. A vampire sleeping with its sworn enemy? Madness.
Angelus and Giles made an agreement. Angelus rules Sunnydale while Buffy only takes care of rogue vampires and various evil demons. They try to stay out of each other’s way if possible.
Willow is Giles’ apprentice in the arts of Watching and Magic. Xander is feeling left behind, useless, and he misses Jessie who was drained but not turned shortly after meeting Buffy. Xander’s parents are abusive, Tony more so than Jessica. His uncle Rory sometimes takes advantage of Xander’s helpful nature. Both men are drunks and have gambling-debts.
Angelus gets interested in the Slayer’s comic relief. He sends Spike to spy on him. Spike doesn’t like the way Xander is being treated by the Slayer & co. Drusilla wants to play with the ‘dark kitten with the wounded eyes’.
One night Angelus sends his minions to fetch Xander.
