Great story all around. I loved the little moment of vulnerability for Spike at the end there. It will make it easier for Xander to trust and lean on him if he knows that Spike is taking some scary risks as well.

OH, this was just lovely!! I'm so glad I checked AFF.net and found this wonderful story. I love H/C with Spike and Xander...I don't care who's getting or giving it ...I just love these boys together...all angsty, but loving!! I'm so relieved that I found this story with so many chapters already written...I've been sitting here obsessed, reading it straight through and would have hated having to wait to see what happened at each of the cliff-hangers. WOO-HOO!! Now, I hope to see more of this story...and soon would be nice. See, I'm a hooked already...and really NEED to see what happens next!!

I normally am turned off by ritualized S&M, it seems absurd to me. But you are using it as a narrative tool here, giving it a powerful meaning, and it is an integral part of your storytelling. Storytelling which is smooth, involving and well-executed. Not only do you handle the major characters with grace, but you do a good job with the peripheral characters as well. I must confess, I am still a little uncertain, though, about what passed between Lorne and Angel. Using Lorne to assassinate an ally, albeit a shifty one, seemed so out of character and low that it tainted Angel for me. I was so disappointed in Joss for damaging my enjoyment of the character in the eleventh hour like that. I'd like to see a writer as good as you tackle the issue. Thanks, and I'll be looking forward to future chapters.
